This book is set behind the lines of the front in World War 1 and highlights the impact of War on everyone across society. Renee has been fighting to survive all her life and Reginald is trying to get away from family expectations of his life. Reginald is instantly attached to Renee but she is totally outside of his place in society. There are lovely touching scenes when Renee cares for Reginald after he is injured. Then both characters seem to make awful decisions and they are driven apart to survive the rest of the War. It is a hard fought love story in the end.
