I'd only read Fourth Wing and Iron Flame by Yarros and was excited to read Variation- quite the difference! I love her contemporary voice- this book has it all-family secrets, sisterly love, first love, oh ,and some steamy sex scenes, and a perfectly happy ending. Looking forward to reading more of her contemporary romances.
Variation ARC review 🩰🌊
Honestly, Rebecca never ceases to draw me in, rip out my soul, put it back together, and leave me wanting more 😂- it’s a skill. I devoured this book in essentially
2 sittings.
The journey of Hudson and Allie is something to behold- it’s the perfect balance of angst, tension and love. This book has everything you want in a contemporary romance -small town, fake dating, multi-POV, great side characters- you do not want to miss out!
Also I love Gavin and wish he could have his own book😂
Honorable mention for favorite character: Sadie, she seemed really quite amazing 🐶
Release day: November 19 ‼️, preorder today!!!
Careful guys! If you have plans, cancel them because Variation by Rebecca Yarros is a gripping read right from the very beginning.
Now I am one who can call out plot twists and endings from the beginning of the book, but with Variation, I was kept on the edge of my seat the entire time! I kid you not, I could not put this book down.
My favorite quote: Flings didn't make room for each other in their lives ... "
My least favorite quote: "Goodbye ... " Why? Because my heart BROKE so many times (Mrs. Yarros how could you 😭).
Who was my favourite character: Gavin. Why? Because he's funny as all hell and is that bit of comedy that everyone needs in their life.
My least favorite character: I don't think I can choose one specific character because everyone had their own strengths and weaknesses and character development. (Except for that one character, you'll understand when you read the book!)
This book gives you the perfect mix of adventure, suspense, second chance romance (or third or fourth but who's counting) only one bed, banter, character growth, plot twists, and so much more.
I highly recommend anyone asking themselves "what do I read next?" To give this book a chance
Small town love story filled with family secrets, second chances, heartbreak, and suspense. Rebecca Yarros weaves a brilliant binge worthy story that you can not put down!
Thank you, Netgalley, and the publisher for the ARC of this book!
I love when Rebecca Yarros tackles contemporary romance. Throw in some second chance, and I'm all in!
For the most part, I really really loved this book- I did feel as if it took a while for me to get into it (although that may have just been me, not necessarily the writing), I think because there were so many names thrown out toward the beginning, and I had to stop to try to keep track of who they were. I loved the depth of the characters, especially Allie and Hudson. They felt so real to me, and the issues that they had to deal with were portrayed very well.
I would love to see more from these characters, especially the sisters, in the future!
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Fourth Wing comes a new contemporary romance about the summer a celebrated dancer returns home and unearths years of family secrets and deep regrets with the Coast Guard rescue swimmer she never forgot.
Elite ballerina Allie Rousseau is no stranger to pressure. With her mother’s eyes always watching, perfection was expected, no matter the cost. But when an injury jeopardizes all she’s sacrificed for, Allie returns to her summer home to heal and recover. But the memories she’s tried to forget rush in and threaten to take her under.
As a Coast Guard rescue swimmer, Hudson Ellis knows that hesitation can mean the difference between life and death. He’s always prided himself on being in the right place at the right time, especially when it came to Allie Rousseau…until the night he left for basic. After the biggest regret of his life, the secrets he keeps mean he can never be with the one woman he wants more than his next breath.
When Hudson’s niece shows up on Allie’s doorstep, desperate to find her birth mother, Allie finds herself in an unimaginable position. Allie and Hudson’s past and present might be endlessly complicated. The thread that tied them to each other all those years ago may have unraveled, but the truth could pull them back together, or drive them apart forever.
Rebecca’s storytelling shines in this powerful tale of love, regret, and second chances. From the first page, I was completely absorbed, swept into Allie and Hudson’s emotionally charged journey. Their story is raw and deeply felt, and I found myself navigating their ups and downs as if I were experiencing them firsthand. The emotional complexity of the characters, combined with Rebecca’s signature heartfelt prose, makes this novel impossible to put down.
If you’re looking for a book that will make you feel deeply and linger in your thoughts long after the last page, this is it. Rebecca's writing is nothing short of spectacular. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!
Thank you Rebecca Yarros and team for this ARC!
Variation is a contemporary romance, which we know Rebecca does so well. It was sweet, emotional, and full of easy to love characters. A second chance, small town romance will do it for me anytime, anyday. The story is heartfelt and moving and has more to offer than your typical romance novels. And in truth Rebecca fashion there is of course a twist in there that you never see coming!
Which is one of the many many reasons I will forever be a Rebecca Yarros fan!
This story between Allie and Hudson was one for the ages! Long lost friend.. Memories and secrets being bolted away. Fear and agony taking over completely.. Love, Hatred, Family, Expectations, Wants, Desires, Dream.. This book has it all.
I was So pleasantly surprised by this book! I knew I would like it because well Rebecca Yarros y'all.. But I didnt know that this book would be one of my all time favorite books of 2024. I absolutely LOVED the way Rebecca brought this epic story to life. We get to see a love story unfold over the pages with over a decade of history between all the characters. There were so many moments I thought wait WHAT!! Just enough twists that you are addicted and need to find out more from each turn of the page.
Allie is a world famous Ballerina. Hudson is a Coast Guard Swimmer. They both have secrets and fears that drive them to make some of the hardest decisions you can imagine. Then walks in Allies niece. And after that everything changes.
I can not recommend this book enough. I loved every single page. There was spice, there was love, there was friendship, there was examples of two completely different types of motherhood, there was sisterhood (good and bad) and just so much more. This book is epic. Honestly not only is it a beautiful story but it also goes on to prove that if you want something bad enough that you have to put the work in to make it happen and when you do you can have anything. An inspiration and a book I will never ever forget!
Rebecca, Rebecca…always tugging on the heartstrings. And this one is no different.
TBH, I know very little about the world of ballet and even less about the life of a Coast Guard rescue swimmer, but boy, oh boy, was I invested deeply in Allie and Hudson from the jump. Yes, that jump.
There is just something about when the guy is unabashedly open about his feelings and so determined to let her know how he feels about her even when he knows she won’t say it back. Hudson is just THAT MAN. Damn. He is everything.
This book has it all. Friends to lovers, second chance romance, fake dating, found family, small town, he falls first, dual POV. And the spice. Phewwwww yup.
Thank you to Rebecca Yarros and her team for this advanced copy!
I was blessed to get this in arc copy it was very well written book and I’m glad that I was able to read it. I would suggest to give this to everybody. This is the book that should be on everyone’s shelf.
Rebecca Yarros can do no wrong in my book, and this lovely novel was everything that I have come to expect from her: exquisite romance, wonderful writing and characters, and most importantly, the ability to draw you in with an amazing plot that doesn't let up until the final sentence. Book Hangovers are real, and because Rebecca Yarros is so fantastic, I get one every time I read her books. This is probably a new favorite. I LOVED IT SO MUCH!!!
RY just knows how to write contemporary!!!!! I loved Allie & Hudson’s story and going through their journey with some twisties that I did not see coming 👀
Allie & Hudson meet one summer and then their lives are changed forever. They’re reunited 10 years later, old feelings start to resurface, but do you let love win or your career? Hudson will lay down his life for Allie but can she learn life balance?
Growing up as a Rousseau meant you strove for perfection because nothing less would be accepted. Allie learned to value predictability, control, perfection, and her mother’s approval. Her family’s legacy took priority over everything including her own true happiness. Hudson Ellis was reckless, dependable, and loved adrenaline filled moments. It’s your classic vacation in a small town for the summer and return to your privileged life in September and don’t fall for the small town boy who doesn’t run in your social circle story. Secrets, grief, loss, and miscommunication lead to Hudson and Allie chasing their dreams separately to only be brought back together by Hudson’s niece searching for her birth mother.
I was so captivated that I read it in a single day. Allie and Hudson’s friendship, along with their evolving love story, truly drew me in. The flashbacks offered glimpses into a much larger narrative you don’t even see coming—even if you think you have it all figured out. There were a few times I was shaking my head, because the author did not hold back with her punches. She was real and raw with her characters, and this is what makes this book so great. If you’ve read the author’s work before, you know she has a gift to rip your heart out in the most beautiful way. There were moments I was waiting for it, moments I said, “Rebecca don’t” (like we are bff’s and she can hear me!). But when I flipped the last page of this book, I was like “damn, she did it again”. You’ll cry, laugh, gasp, think wtf, and overall be captivated by the strength, hope, and grace you will find within the pages of Variation.
Some of my takeaways after finishing Variation: Grief and loss are intense experiences, and therapy helps unpack the complex emotions associated with them. Healing and breaking generational trauma begin with the desire to improve upon past experiences. Loving someone means being present in their highs and lows. It's acceptable to love your family while pursuing your dreams, which can evolve over time.
✨Book Review✨
Variation - Rebecca Yarros
📖 Hudson is a Coast Guard rescue swimmer. Allie is an elite ballerina who just suffered a major injury. When Allie returns to her summer home to recover she finds herself face to face with Hudson - and a past she doesn’t want to remember. Childhood best friends, until they weren’t - their past is endlessly complicated. Will they be able to be pulled back together, or will they be driven apart forever?
📚 Rebecca Yarros is the antithesis of, “I’ll stop when I get to the end of this chapter.” Her cliffhangers are unable to be ignored and left me turning pages well past my bedtime. I really enjoyed this plot, the characters, and the intricate family dynamics that were included. While there were a lot of ballet references, Yarros did an excellent job weaving the information into the story in a way that felt natural and easy to understand. The twists were serious but utterly believable and the bedroom scenes are sizzlingly hot with a door that’s wide open.
I was so lucky to read an Advanced Readers Copy! Thank you to @rebeccayarros and @NetGalley for the opportunity to review early!
🌟 When this hits shelves on November 19th you’re going to want to pick up a copy! This is a contemporary romance you don’t want to miss.

I swear, everything this woman writes is pure gold. Rebecca Yarros has a knack for pulling you in with drama and suspense while simultaneously wrecking your emotions. I loved it and I loved Variation. I felt all the feelings from Allie and Hudson with this Dual POV. Despair, anger, hurt, love, fear, joy, more despair... I understood both of their situations and their feelings for each other, and there was still plenty of mystery for all the plot twists at the end. I love that they owned their feelings and didn’t play immature games with each other throughout the whole book and I adore that he fell first within the first chapter. The nod at the “one bed” trope had me cackling. Just when I thought I could predict what was going to happen, I was taken another direction. ALSO - the spice was *chef’s kiss.* The barre scene?? DAMN..
Seeing their reunion after 10 years based around a little girl trying to find out who her birth parents are hit home for me because I was adopted as a baby too, and reading Juniper’s curiosity and her feelings brought me back to my own curiosities about my birth parents.
Overall, I loved how the title “Variation” had so many meanings in this book, from the initial ballet term, to the variations of stories told and believed (of Lina’s death, Allie and Hudson’s relationship, their mom’s “institution, Eva’s quarter life crisis) It was so well done.
By the end, my mind was completely blown, my heart shattered, stitched back together, resulting with me ugly crying.
5 stars!
Hudson & Allie are are really interesting characters that you instantly warm to, as always with Rebecca Yarros it is a perfect book to lose yourself in. Without giving too much away it is not as devastating as The Last Letter, so it is possible to read in public! A superb addition to the romance genre.
I grew up in ballet so this was an interesting read. There is a lot of nuance related to the dance world, and a sweet romance on the side. There is some miscommunication at the center of the plot but the great characters make up for it.
