The story follows police officer Jake and his wife Bree as they adjust to life with two children and a move to a new house. The plot thickens as they begin to uncover unexpected secrets about each other and their new home.
The book navigates various stereotypes, with the author carefully balancing these elements throughout the narrative. I appreciated the well-developed story and character arcs, which kept me engaged and eager to see what would happen next. "Every Fall" is a complex tale that took me on a winding journey, making for a compelling read.
Angela Douglas's latest thriller, hitting shelves on January 28, 2025, dives into a world that is both unsettling and gripping. With a blend of paranormal mystery and crime thriller, this story kept me on my toes—delivering suspense that felt incredibly real. Given that my own significant other works in law enforcement, certain scenes hit close to home, making me pause and hold my loved one a little tighter.
While the plot was packed with drama and kept me hooked from the start, I found the characters, particularly Jake and Amber, difficult to sympathize with. Jake, in particular, felt insufferable, using his emotions as an excuse for questionable actions toward everyone around him. Despite this, the story’s unexpected twists and almost Riley Sager-esque vibe provided an intriguing blend of supernatural suspense that mostly delivered. A few loose threads and missing details left me wanting more depth by the end, but overall, the novel's unique tone and dramatic storyline made it a compelling read.
Thank you to Rising Action Publishing, NetGalley, The Pulse, and Angela Douglas for the opportunity to read this ARC. Fans of crime thrillers with a twist of the supernatural will want to add this to their TBR!
Bree and James are a married couple with their young toddler. James becomes a police officer in a rough city and the strain begins to pull on their marriage. One day, his work follows him home and puts them all in danger. Will moving give them the fresh start they need??
Wow this was so incredibly fast paced - I LOVED it. It was filled to the brim with domestic violence and ghosts….spooky. I devoured this in a few sittings and honestly couldn’t put it down. It was a thriller with some horror aspects sprinkled in - highly recommend.
A multi-POV story about a young family grappling with first responder PTSD, postpartum depression, a tough neighborhood, street gangs, infidelity, and maybe some ghosts. The style of POV felt close, almost like a diary.
I never did figure out why the book was set around 2012/13. If there were historical markers of that time, I missed them. I was distracted by this and waiting for some meaning behind it as the story progressed. Maybe a series is in the works? The last 20% pumped up in action, yet the perspectives of Bree in the middle of the book kept me engaged. Her experiences in the house were mysterious and compelling, and kept me reading to the end.

BOOK REVIEW: 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤/5
Bree holds her breath every time her husband Jake leaves for a shift as a beat cop in East Bernheim. This menacing town is riddled with crime as it is … and when crime starts to follow Jake home and target his family, Jake knows they cannot stay in Bernheim much longer.
In order to keep pregnant Bree and their son Riley safe, they decide to rent out their condo in Bernheim and move an hour away to an area that seems to be safer. Bree starts to hear creepy noises in the new house and see things that chill her to the bone. This house has a bad reputation of being haunted .. and it starts to wrap its claws around the couple as their marriage starts to crumble into pieces.
When a tragedy happens at work while their new baby is being born, Jake begins to spiral downwards into a path of destruction. Often alone in the house with two children, Bree has never felt more isolated and alone .. and scared … not only of the house, but her husband.
Oouuuu I love a GRITTY police procedural that dives into the dark underworld of policing and how deeply trauma can affect lives. The taunting of the criminals gets under your skin and even as a reader you feel like you have to watch your back. I felt unsafe, tense, unsettled and suffocated while reading this book and I was totally HOOKED!
Thank you kindly to @angeladouglasbooks @risingactionpublishingco @netgalley for my advanced digital copy in exchange for my honest review! This book releases on January 28, 2025!
Wow, this was a wild ride! A thriller with a sprinkle of paranormal. I finished this one in less than 24 hours because I just couldn't put it down. I did find Jake to be a wildly unlikeable character in the second half of the book.
Overall, this was a great book and I would definitely recommend!
Thank you to NetGalley and Rising Action Publishing for the advanced copy.
Jake is a policeman whose job is located in a dangerous crime infested area. Bree knew that marrying a policeman would not be easy, but when her family’s safety is threatened, she convinces Jake to move to a different neighborhood, just a step above their current one. However, the move isn’t what they dreamed it would be. Tragedy strikes and Jake becomes distant. Bree, who is already feeling alone, starts to hear voices and see things that she can’t explain. Then there’s the car she claims she keeps seeing pass her house. Neighbors tell them that the house has had history of strange activity that occurs every Fall. Have they really escaped the threats that caused them to move away and what is really going on inside this mysterious house?
This book is told from multiple points of view and is a combination of a psychological thriller with a hint of paranormal. I really felt for Bree as she struggled to raise two young children as the wife of a police officer who is experiencing grief and guilt. This book definitely has dark moments and characters that you don’t know if you can trust. It kept me engaged from start to finish and the combination of themes that include toxic police culture, PTSD, postpartum depression, murder, grief and an eerie isolated setting with mysterious neighbors all contribute to the intense storyline, making it a thriller you will won’t want to miss!
A great mix of family drama, paranormal aspects and police procedural in this fast paced debut thriller by Angela Douglas.
Young parents Jake and Bree decide it’s time to make a change and move to a safer area when Jake’s job as a cop gets a little too close to home. Things seem to improve until Bree experiences strange occurrences in their new house and tragedy hits the police force. Jake begins to lash out and act strangely in his grief while Bree tries to take care of their children and cope with feeling alone.
Every Fall will capture your attention from start to finish. It may even have you checking the locks on your doors and listening to those sounds that go bump in the night. I will definitely be looking forward to the next page turner by Angela Douglas.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Rising Action Publishing Co. for the advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
A thriller exploring the dark side of police culture and family trauma. Bree and Jake's lives are turned upside down when crime follows them home, leading to a series of disturbing events. As they try to protect their family, they are faced with guilt, grief, and haunting nightmares. Every Fall delves into themes of trauma and toxicity in the police force, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.
This book is incredibly dark and chilling, and I absolutely loved it! The fast-paced narrative includes some paranormal elements that immediately drew me in and left me wanting more. The story, at times, was frustrating, adding a touch of reality that made the paranormal aspects feel even more plausible.
I particularly enjoyed the character development and the eerie atmosphere of the old, creepy house. These elements really enhanced the overall story and kept me engaged until the very end. The plot twists took me by surprise, but I found them to be incredibly satisfying.
I can't wait for this book to be released so that others can experience the thrill of reading it. If you enjoy trying to guess "whodunit" and appreciate unpredictable twists and turns, then this book is definitely for you. I highly recommend adding it to your "to be read" list, as it is a binge-worthy read that stands out from everything else I've read this year.
Thank you, Rising Action Publishing Co. | Rising Action for digital ARC copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Everyone over at @thrillerbookloversthepulse is all abuzz over this one! Thanks to @angeladouglasbooks and @risingactionpublishingco for a #gifted eARC.
This one takes a haunted house paranormal story and mixes it with crime and family drama. Actions packed, full of suspense with a lot going on, but in the best way.
I felt the multiple POVs made you as the reader question everything. Everyone was a bit unhinged and unreliable. I could see why Bree at times questioned her own sanity. Very twisty read!
Thank you to @thrillerbookloversthepulse for the #gifted copy.
Wow! Every Fall was a fast paced book. It was filled with domestic drama, police procedurals and ghosts. Yes, yes and yes!! Now I won’t lie, Jake pissed me off more than once. He was easily unlikable, but stick with it. I get the why. You will want to read this book. I can’t wait to read more by this author.
Trigger warnings : PPD, PTSD
I really enjoyed the looming sense of danger that lingered throughout the pages. Bree and her police officer husband Jake move away from a bad neighborhood, wanting to keep their son safe. Especially, after Jake, in the course of his duties, runs afoul with a gang in the area. But of course strange things begin to happen in their new older home. This was creepier than I was expecting which I loved and the plotting was so entertaining. I can see why this one is popular at Thriller Book Lovers The Pulse.
This book had a little bit of everything that I love! It was part police procedural, part thriller, and part paranormal. This was a quick read, and I whenever I had to put it down, I couldn't wait until I was able to pick it back up! The alternating POVs between Bree and Jake were well done, as was the mental health representation. I also thought some of the paranormal parts were good and creepy! I'll be looking forward to this author's next book!
Everyone here at The Pulse @thrillerbookloversthepulse
has been raving about this book, so make sure to look for it when it comes out in January!
Thank you @netgalley and @risingactionpublishing for the #gifted e-arc!
I really enjoyed the story of Bree and Jake! At one point very early on I was convinced I knew where things were going but I was wrong lol I liked the way this was written in multiple POV’s so the reader was able to see what each character was experiencing during those times. As someone who’s sibling is a police officer, a lot of the situations were nerve wracking because these are things that happen on duty. I also really enjoyed the small paranormal twist, I think the author did a great job of not letting it take away from the story at all but giving it that little extra!
Thank you to Thriller Book Lovers - The Pulse and Angela Douglas for this ARC! Every Fall comes out on January 28, 2025
This was an exciting suspense novel that incorporated the paranormal, crime fiction, stalking, and family drama. At first, I wasn’t sure if this was an action-suspense thriller or an edgy horror story but as the narrative developed, it was more about a realistic family facing the demands of living in a crime-ridden town, the ghosts of horrific crimes, and parents who will go to all lengths to protect their family. I really felt for Bree, as a young wife and mother, who wants to help her husband battle the demons of his job as a policeman. She’s dealing with her own issues of postpartum matters and feeling unsafe in her environment. 3.5
Every fall is tense, chilling and a roller coaster of emotions.
It’s so much more than a thriller. It blends domestic thriller, police procedural and paranormal elements.
A mom with 2 under 2 with anxiety and a first responder dealing with grief and trauma.
The couple moves to another town after dealing with dangerous criminals related to Jake’s job. Thinking the move will be good for them doesn’t turn out the way they planned.
Definitely recommend this one and be sure to check any trigger warnings.
Every Fall is a tense and atmospheric thriller that will captivate fans of Karin Slaughter and Lisa Gardner. It takes readers on a haunting journey through the complex dynamics of family trauma and the darker sides of police culture. Angela Douglas delivers a well-paced narrative that doesn’t shy away from uncomfortable truths, painting a raw picture of Bree and Jake’s crumbling relationship amid the grit of East Bernheim.
The story begins with Bree, who knows the risks of marrying a beat cop and the struggles of life in “the Burner,” a high-crime neighborhood where her husband, Jake, works. As they try to build a home in this challenging environment, a terrifying incident brings the violence to their doorstep. In response, they move to a safer area, but this transition only masks their deeper issues.
Bree’s experience as a mother is visceral and intensely realistic, exploring themes of postpartum depression and isolation. Her unraveling mental state, coupled with Jake’s spiral after a tragedy at work, creates an emotionally charged atmosphere that builds suspense at every turn. The author deftly examines toxic masculinity, guilt, and grief, showing how these forces can drive a family to the edge.
The book's pacing is gripping, with twists that keep readers guessing. The sense of dread is palpable, and the writing beautifully evokes both Bree's struggles and Jake's torment. As the couple’s lives spiral out of control, the plot delves deep into the psychological impact of working in law enforcement and the toll it takes on families.
Content Warnings: Every Fall handles heavy themes with unflinching honesty, including postpartum depression, spousal abuse, infidelity, violence, opioid addiction, and death. These elements are integral to the plot, adding depth and complexity but also making this a dark, intense read that may be unsettling for some.
Overall, Every Fall is a haunting exploration of resilience and the battle to protect one’s family in the face of fear and betrayal. It’s a must-read for those who appreciate thrillers with emotional depth and social commentary.
Parts of this book super creeped me out! A really good psychological thriller. Jake was unlikable tbh, major red flags at every turn. Absolutely hated him. However I also wanted to keep reading to find out what happened next. Extremely well done by the author to make you hate a main character so much that you don’t even want to see them anymore, yet you still keep reading because you have to finish.
Every Fall is an incredibly gripping and multi-layered book. While it's categorized as a thriller, it offers so much more with its blend of family drama, police procedural, and a touch of the paranormal.
Bree (a SAHM) and Jake (a police officer) move their family out of the crime-infested city of East Bernheim after one of Jake’s cases follows him home and threatens his family.
Jake is a complex, often unlikable, character embroiled in a world of violence, toxic police culture, his own struggles with toxic masculinity, and lingering effects of grief, all of which contribute to his mental health issues. Bree, feeling isolated from her friends and family, grapples with postpartum depression, insomnia, and a lack of coping mechanisms while being married to a first responder. Understandably, their marriage is struggling.
The new house was supposed to be a fresh start, but instead of peace, Bree and Jack are plagued by creaking floors, open windows, and mysterious footsteps. Is it all in their heads, or have the bad guys found them? Or could something supernatural be at play in their new home? These eerie occurrences add a whole new layer of suspense.
The story moves rapidly, keeping me on the edge of my seat with plenty of tension. There were moments when my heart was pounding. Douglas really brings everything together for a captivating story. I believe fans of domestic suspense or psychological thrillers will absolutely love this one.
Bree and Jake are married and making life work in their not so safe, but manageable neighborhood in 'Burner.' That is until after Jake's work as a cop comes knocking at their door. Jake knows it no longer safe to have his wife and son living there, so he packs them up, and they all move an hour away. What starts out as a new happy life for their growing family soon turns into a life no better than they were living before. Bree is hearing unexplainable voices and experiencing terrifying nightmares. Jakes is suffering from grief after a tragedy occurs at work, and it's affecting his mental well-being. Bree no longer feels safe in her home, and their marriage is starting to fall apart.
Hold on and buckle up because Every Fall is a highly addictive novel that you will not want to put down until you reach the very end. This book had it all! Thrills, chills, paranormal happenings, mentions of PPD & PTSD, trials of motherhood, grief, life of a first responder, and so much more. I loved how relatable both Bree and Jake's characters were. Granted, I wasn't a huge fan of Jake, but we really get the raw true picture of how bad things get when people are at their lowest. I also love that I read this book in October because there were some legitimately creepy parts in here. I was home alone reading this, and it had me walking around the house checking to see if my doors were locked. Not even lying 😅
