I love a book with deaf representation! I have been a fan of Abigail since her Bachelor days, and loved hearing more about her background and growing up with hearing loss. Abigail’s personality shines with her kindness and was a really informative and touching memoir.
I listened to this in one day - it was a fun, informative read. Perfect for any member of Bachelor Nation!
my first audiobook!! i loved abigail in matt’s season, and it was cool to hear about her journey. this was a beautiful story and honestly made me tear up multiple times. i took ASL in high school, and this book offered such a unique perspective on the big D and little d deaf community. thank you to the author and netgalley for this ARC!
This is a fascinating memoir that details Abigail’s experience as both a woman of the deaf community and a bachelor contestant. There were some areas where I felt information was repeated more than necessary, but overall I’m very happy to have read this and feel more educated.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to this book. As an able bodied person, I am always interested in learning about how others live. How they get through life without the same senses I have. This memoir was such a great look into how Abigail Heringer navigated growing up and then also being on The Bachelor. I am not a watcher of the show, but was a really fun look at the behind the scenes.
Obviously I; like many other people fell in love with Abigail during her bachelor nation journey and I was so excited to get to know her and her story on a deeper level.
The Deaf Girl is a well told memoir that is easy to follow and enjoyable to listen to however; at times it came off as more factual than emotional.
This was a great listen. While the first part was a little mundane - probably due to Abigail recounting her mom’s experience of raising two girls with cochlear implants, when we move into Abigail’s high school years and beyond, I really felt like u got to know her, her struggles, her emotions, her genuine personality. I don’t watch bachelor but have in the past and am familiar with it so hearing about that venture was also fun. I’m happy she seems to have found her place and happiness. I would recommend that as a quick nonfiction audio listen! Thank you for the arc!
🌼Title: The Deaf Girl: A Memoir of Hearing Loss, Hope, and Fighting Against the Odds
🌼Author: Abigail Heringer
🌼Genre: Memoir
I truly enjoyed this memoir. I listened to the audiobook and was so happy to have it read by the author herself. I enjoyed watching Abigail Heringer on the Bachelor and Bachelor in Paradise. This is such a special story and I can’t express how much I learned from it. So many people like myself lack awareness of what life is like for the hard of hearing and deaf. Heringer is a trailblazer and I can see how many people she will help and educate. I am even more in awe of her journey, especially now knowing more of what it was like for her to go on national television. She is a strong and empowering individual.
I enjoyed seeing Heringer’s journey on the pages and how she learns self acceptance and self advocacy. I absolutely recommend this book.

The most honest and detailed testimony of hearing loss I have ever read. Thank you, Abigail, for sharing your story! I have known who Abigail was since she was on Matt’s season of The Bachelor (the first deaf contestant on the show). It is important to distinguish that this book is so much more than a story about a reality show contestant and you do not need to be familiar with The Bachelor at all in order to read it. Abigail does an excellent job explaining her childhood and navigating life up into adulthood as “the deaf girl”. The book is very educational, providing information on the deaf (and the capital “D” Deaf) community, cochlear implants, schooling, and more. Abigail was incredibly open and vulnerable with her life experiences and the resulting emotions she felt in different phases of life. I was particularly struck by her feelings of isolation as a cochlear implant user caught between the hearing community and the Deaf community, her difficulty with relationships/dating, and her difficulty hearing others in social situations or on The Bachelor. I had no concept of how truly difficult it is navigating life with a hearing loss disability and how many challenges she has overcome to get where she is today. I also really enjoyed listening to Abigail read the audiobook. Her emotion and passion are evident throughout. I highly recommend this memoir - Abigail is an inspiration! Thank you to NetGalley, Abigail Heringer, and Sourcebooks for the gifted ARC audiobook recording in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC audiobook of The Deaf Girl: A Memoir of Hearing Loss, Hope, and Fighting Against the Odds by Abigail Heringer.
I find learning about the Deaf community fascinating. Like Abigail says not all disabilities are One Size Fits All. The discrimination that deaf people have against each other blows me away. I can't imagine going to an ASL class and having the deaf teacher bad mouthing people with cochlear implants.
Abigail was born deaf, and her mother consented to her daughter getting a cochlear implant at age two. Her older sister was also born deaf and has a cochlear implant. Unlike her sister Abigail was introverted and did not like to draw attention to her deafness. She wanted to blend in and not have to ask for special accommodations.
It was interesting to read about her struggles and accomplishments. Her mistakes and her victories. Striving to find that one person who would advocate for you and love you for who you are.
I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who is around deaf or hard of hearing people. I totally related to her having issues hearing when in big groups, missing what people are saying and not wanting to draw attention to yourself. I had sudden hearing loss two years ago in my left ear. So many people do not understand what it is like to not know where a sound comes from, how hard it is to hear someone talk, how embarrassing it is to ask someone to repeat themselves several times, to hear people tell you never mind because they don't want to repeat themselves. It is so frustrating. Thank you, Abigail for bringing light to this subject.
It was also fun to get a behind the scene look at the Bachelor.
Thank you RB Media, NetGalley and Abigail Herringer for providing me with a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I was really excited to listen to this book because I love Abigail Herringer, I found her so endearing and lovely on the bachelor franchise. While some of the writing was slightly juvenile, I loved how she was educating us on her life starting at a young age. It really showed us life with a disability and it showed the different perspectives from the deaf community.
I think honestly everyone should read this, it's a quick educational read and I think everyone will enjoy this.
Listened to this in one day! I love Abigail during her times on Bachelor Nation, but love her even more now. Listening to her share her story was beautiful because she shares her heart, her fears and highs.
I love memoirs, and having a glimpse into someone else's life. I picked up this book to hear about life with a cochlear implant. I have never watched the bachelor, so I knew nothing about her being on the show.
The author did a great job reading the audiobook version.
I did feel like it lacked substance in many ways, but I think that's merely because she is fairly young and she kept the focus on her upbringing and then the show.
I don't like rating memoirs, since everyone's story is worth sharing! I am rating more on the depth and substance of this book. It's a personal story of a deal girl, with a large focus on her experience on reality TV.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.
I really enjoyed this one! I have been trying to make it a priority this year to read more books by disabled authors and I'm really glad I came across this one! I watched some of the season of the Bachelor that Abigal was on and she was one of my favorite contestants that year. I took ASL in high school and have had an interest in the deaf community but had never read anything by someone with a cochlear implant. While I do understand both sides of that debate, I really enjoyed Abigal's story and hearing her perspective. I will be recommending this to my friends who are interested in learning more about the deaf community.
Overall, this was a 4.5 stars for me!
I was thrilled when Abigail announced she was releasing her own book. I’ve loved her since her time on *The Bachelor* and adored her even more on *Bachelor in Paradise*. It was fascinating to learn more about her life story, her experiences with her cochlear implant, and the challenges she’s faced. I also appreciated that she narrated the audiobook herself—it added a personal touch. While I enjoyed most of the book, I found that some parts felt repetitive, which made it lose a bit of its impact at times.
I thoroughly enjoyed Abigails story of growing up deaf and overcoming her fears of being her true self, and not just being 'the deaf girl'. She is an inspiration to everyone, hearing or not. I love the way she gives homage to her family, especially her sister Rachel and her mother and grandparents. She is blessed and she knows it. I was lucky enough to see her on the Batchelor and loved her. However I didn't know she went on to Batchelor in Paradise and found her true love there. Congratulations Abigail on finding love and finding your true self in the process! I listened to the audio version of this book and she did a wonderful job narrating her own story. Highly recommended. 5 stars.
Many thanks to Net Galley and RBmedia | Recorded Books for a chance to listen/read an audio version of this book.
Thank you NetGalley for the audio of this memoir! Abigail is such an inspiration to so many people. I began my journey into learning about the Deaf community in university and was so inspired by Abigail's story. I watched her on the Bachelor and BIP and quickly became a fan! I loved learning about her experience and how she navigated different things throughout her life. This is a quick read (or listen) and will leave you feeling inspired and hopefully with a new perspective on life. The audio was spectacularly done and I loved hearing her raw emotion of retelling her life.
I listened to the audio book, which was narrated by the author, and this added a whole new dimension. It was a very interesting story and made me fall in love with Abigail. Alot of information regarding the bachelor franchise. It was all real life and very true. You can not help but wish for it to work out for Abigail and Noah. It is hard to realize exactly what Abigail and those who are deaf have gone through in their lives.
Thank you Net galley for the advanced copy of this audiobook. The audiobook is narrated by the author herself which connects you with her. I knew nothing about her being on the Bachelor so it was a fun read for those insights. In addition she does a remarkable job informing about being deaf, the struggles and differences as well as advocacy. Shout out to her love for her mother and grandparents who help to make her the amazing person she is. Not your typical memoir. Definitely worth the read-especially the audiobook.
