More of a drama than a thriller.
Sorry i really struggled to get into this and ended up skimming through.
Sadly not for me.
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
Fool Me Once tells the story of Kate who seems to have a normal life until she witneses a car accident one night. Even though the emergency services come to help the victims and the neighbours also see it, everyone pretends it never happened the day after. Kate stats to think something must be happening to her, that she is losing her mind, but then she sees something that makes her start her own investigation...
First things first, I loved this book and it was well-written. There's good character development and the ending makes sense.
The novel is written in five different parts, each from a different POV of Kate, Jimmy, Hailey, and Helen. The final part is the conclusion of all POVs and how they intertwine, with an additional POV. The big reveal (or hints of it) happens at the end of Part I and the novel revolves around discovering the ins and outs of it. There's an additional mystery around the different POVs and why they happen in that order. I think that's as much as I can say without spoiling it for everyone.
In my opinion, this is not a Mystery & Thriller in the strict sense of the word, or the 'domestic thriller' genre that is so prevalent these days. As someone who read a lot of sci-fi / distopyan / etc novels growing up, I could tell where the book was going straight away, but again, I like that genre so it's all good with me.
This suspenseful novel follows Kate, who witnesses a car crash into a neighbor’s fence—only to be told it never happened, and the fence is unscathed. As Kate questions her reality, the story delivers a unique twist on a psychological thriller. Her first-person chapters are gripping, but the book falters later, with too much profanity and a loss of momentum. While intriguing and original, it may not satisfy all readers. Still, it’s worth exploring for its strong start and mysterious premise.
Kate thought she knew her neighbors. But they’ve been keeping secrets… Well this book was definitely very different?! It was a bit weird once I knew what was going on! But it was an interesting read! It had suspense, intriguing, mysterious, murder, very focused on social networking! I would recommend reading this book, but it’s definitely a bit different! Thank you NetGalley, the author and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
