This one recaptured the magic of Old Man’s War. The humor and wit was back as we returned to John Perry’s story. However, there was also so much more to this story and some parts felt very relevant to today’s current events.
“When you control communication, you can hide anything you want.”
This idea pervades the Colonial Union as they try to hide the existence of Roanoke - John and Jane’s new colony - and as they try to prevent their citizens from learning about the Conclave of alien nations. All of this goes wrong, of course. This story is full of so much heart and humanity, from their daughter Zoë to the empathetic approach they have to protecting their colony, but also to protecting the alien races from unnecessary death.
“When you make someone more than human, you make them less than human, too.”

Thank you to @torbooks for the copy of the book! All thoughts are my own.

I did not realize this was a reissue of a book I read about twenty years ago. I did not need to read it again. I will always love John Scalzi.

In the third installment of The Old Man’s War Sagan and Perry are living quiet lives farming and settling disputes in their community. It doesn’t take long for their past to catch up and entangle them once again in the strife and politics of a new settlement. Maybe don’t name the new settlement “Roanoke” though, if you want it to succeed.
John Scalzi’s humor and adventure are a great mix, and this is a fun third book in the series!

I love this series, and this author has been an autobuy for me since I read this series. I'm having a blast rereading it and collecting new covers.
This is one of my favorite volumes of the six. We're back to the main characters of book 1 but as a human family with an adopted daughter who has her past, her history, value to other races, and two fun bodyguards. The family will be in the middle of a colonial war that will threaten their lives, but our mcs know how to negotiate. Sweet ending.

A new reissue of the third novel in the "Old Mans War" setting. Still a worth while book to read in the vein of "Starship Troopers" or "The Forever War."

Joh Scalizi's writing is enjoyable as he tends to slip in entertaining and witty dialog. It makes me want to keep reading.

Thank you to NetGalley, Tor Publishing Group, and most especially John Scalzi for this eARC of the re-release of The Last Colony.
If you are a fan of any of Mr. Scalzi's other works or the works of Cory Doctorow, Seanan McGuire, Martha Wells, Travis Baldree, or any of their contemporaries, this series is for you! The third title in the Old Man's War series, The Last Colony returns readers to the lives of John Parry & Jane Sagan as they begin semi-retirement with an invitation (bordering on an order) to serve as the governors for humanity's first new colony in decades. Unfortunately, not all is as it seems and the lines between friend and foe begin to blur as the various galactic forces in Scalzi's universe vie for power and the inhabitants of their new colony squabble for independance & leadership.
It's a hell of a good time and a wonderful next chapter in the saga of Old Man's War - one of Scalzi's best creations!
