Invite God’s goodness into bedtime with this rhyming prayer book from Max Lucado featuring prayers and praises about God’s creation, presence, help, forgiveness, and loving heart written by Max and his wife, Denalyn. This keepsake book also includes blessings for parents to speak over their little ones. After talking to God each night, your child will fall asleep feeling joyful and cared for. I always love how Lucado make a story meaningful for children to read.
This is a very sweet book of prayers to teach your children and to pray over your children. We read this book all the way through at once due to it being an ARC, but I think it works even better to have the hard copy and to choose a prayer your child (or you) thinks is the best for the occasion. My daughter (5) had a couple of prayers that she asked me to slow down on so that she could repeat the lines after me. My son (2) loved looking at the pictures and pointing out the animals. The illustrations are really cute, and I very much appreciate the verse references included to help me connect this book to the Bible. Definitely one I will be picking up in hard copy when it releases. We read this book through NetGalley.
A Precious Board Book-
With a scripture included for every prayer, this sweet board book shares prayers for ages 0-4. Prayers for growing to be more like God, seeing God’s miracles, exploring God’s world and thanking God for everything, to name a few. The premise is simple and stated in this way- “We can teach them to talk to God about anything, any time and all the time. We can’t be with them always, but God can.” So, why not teach prayer from infancy? That said, this book would be an excellent gift for expectant parents.
Max Lucado remains the master of rhyming verse poetic meter. Like magic, his prose flows effortlessly through the storyline, from beginning to end. Prayers, blessings and scripture all come together for those precious times with our children, teaching them the habit of talking to God from an early age.
I received this book from the author/publisher free of charge, with no expectation of a positive review.

I absolutely loved this children's book! So thankful to have been able to read and review this ARC. The prayers were so beautiful and easy for children to understand and use when they encounter the world. It will be a great foundation for kids to remember the Bible verses with each that have been adapted for them to understand. The illustrations were beyond beautiful! I also loved that with each children's prayer, there was one for the parent to pray blessings over their child. Can't wait for it to be published - it will be the PERFECT gift.

My kids loved this book. I can’t wait to get a hard copy for our bookshelf, and to gift this to my friends. The art work is fantastic and my kids wanted to linger on the pictures. Reading these prayers before we go to school and before bed has been so helpful to bring the Lord into these little transitional moments. Having them read the prayers also sparks discussions that are fruitful, as we discover more about God and his character. We love it! 5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Max Lucados book are always just so wonderful! And this one should be on the shelf of every parent. It was the sweetest, most beautiful story and my kids absolutely cherished each page. Max Lucado does such a beautiful job of writing such beautiful words. Wonderfully done!
When my own children were little, I looked for books just like this: simple, beautifully illustrated, and educational, with a distinct Christian message. God Bless This Child fits that description perfectly. It is important to teach children to pray, not only to ask for something, but to worship God Himself and thank Him for everything He is and has done for us. Young and old will love reading this over and over again. It would be a welcome addition to any family’s bookshelf.
*I received a complimentary copy of this e-book courtesy of Tommy Nelson Publishing through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Very sweet book with several prayers for children. This would be an excellent guide for those kids that are learning to pray. The accompanying illustrations are very peaceful and sweet.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for this e-ARC!
The art in this is really good, and there were so many cute animal moments captured. When reading this to my nieces, I think the art is what really captured their interest. There was a lot of "awwws" when they say the animals all nice and cozy. The prayers had a nice rhythm to them that could help children as they're going to sleep, and they're just overall feel good and nice. So yeah, if you're a parent with a kiddo you want to read prayers with, this would be a good book to use!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Tommy Nelson for this eARC in exchange for an honest review of it. Fantastic.
4 out of 5 stars.
Hear me out.
At first view the childrens book 'God Bless This Child' by Max Lucado and illustrated by Denalyn Lucado is a beautiful book of adapted prayers for children.
As you know, I am not religious, although I do seek God and belief in something, it's in my own way, but it's there loud and clear.
When I picked this up, I was so worried that there would be some sort of underlying constraint and/or idk agenda? But the prayers are modern and truly sweet. They remind me of this little book of prayers I used to read as a child, the golden treasury ones with the gold spines and the blond child on the front praying with her eyes closed. Anyway, this book gives me the same feelings.
I like how every separate page her or she is used, but it could have been a bit more inclusive with a them or they, but we can't press for things, religion is such a slow moving structure and so easily ruined by the greed of man.
The art is so beautiful, not going to lie. Soft images.
