Overall review: 3.25 stars.

It was cute, it was cozy, it was full of witchcraft. However, the witchcraft wasn't described hardly at all. It says she's a sister of Kael (spelling?), but I have no clue what that means in comparison to the sisters of the other covens. Is there even a difference other than birth location? I'm unsure.

But this book is a quick fun read for fall! Stakes are low, tensions are low, characters that appear wholesome truly are. It's a nice breath of fresh air in comparison to most romantasy books.

I would hardly consider it an "adult" novel, though. Technically the FMC is in her 30s, but she could easily be 19 (or younger) since her age isn't a real factor. There are no open door scenes, and nothing overly complex to classify it as an adult novel instead of YA.

Overall I would recommend it to anyone looking for a breezy read to get them through a slump or into the fall season. Personally, I like a little more from my reads in the way of conflict.

About the book 👇🏽

After years of conscripted service to a corrupt king, Evelyn Rosewood seizes a chance to earn her freedom. With little more than an enchanted satchel and her feathered familiar, she sets out on a quest to dispel a mysterious blight that has shrouded a once-thriving harborside town in despair.

However, upon her arrival in the bustling port city, rumors of a dark curse mingle with the salty breeze, and the town’s initial warmth gives way to suspicion.

Aided by a handsome, albeit grumpy, herb merchant, Evelyn aims to heal more than just the vast farmlands. But with time, it appears she is not the only one keeping secrets. Can her magic mend the town’s fractured past and open guarded hearts, including her own?

✨ My thoughts;

A super fast and cozy read and/or listen! I listened to this book in one sitting and found the audiobook to be entertaining. I loved the magical aspects of this story and it held my attention all the way through. I got all the cozy vibes I was looking for and my experience listening to it was great. I’d recommend this to readers that look for books that feel like a warm blanket on a cold day!

Happy reading 📖

"A Drop of Fortune" is a cosy fantasy book telling a story of Evelyn Rosewood - a young witch who's made to serve a corrupt king. She is sent on a mission through which she can finally earn her freedom after being in service for the last few years. She ends up in a small town where she needs to figure out how to get rid of the curse set on the town, but to do that she needs to blend in. And so starts Evelyn's adventure that will eventually give or cost her the freedom she's been longing.

When I read the description for the book I was HOOKED. It sounded like it would be a perfect cosy autumnal book and although I liked it in general it did fall a bit flat for me. I did get through the book rather fast, but I found myself kind of bored at times, since the stakes were a bit too low. "A Drop of Fortune" is advertised as an adult cosy romantasy, but it's a bit too simple to be that and I think it would've work better as a YA book.

However I did enjoy the cosy small town (I guess rather village) vibes and it felt like I was walking through a video game land listening to this book. I liked Evelyn as the main character and her familiar Archie was a fun side character. It was a really easy read and it definitely helped me to get more into the cosy autumnal mood. My final score is 3 stars and I'd reccommend it to anyone who enjoys low stake cosy romantasy books.

What to expect? cosy fantasy with witches and other magical creatures, extremely low stakes, small town vibes, no spice, found family

Tis the season for cozy witchy reads and this is a perfect read if that is what you are looking for. A book with fairly welcoming neighbors, a mystery to solve, and a cute herb merchant? Yes, please! Someone point me in the right direction and I will pack up and move my pups along too.

Evelyn Rosewood refuses to go against her own beliefs and create a poison for the king. Instead, she takes the opportunity to travel to a small harborside town which has been cursed and try to fix the blight on the land. Though some people in the village are wary, she finds a group of people she is able to bond with and the cozy vibes of friendship, cute romance, and magic, radiate through the pages.

The action isn't too hard hitting. There aren't swords and knights. However, there are relationship issues to work through and personal demons to face as well as discrimination and biases against witchy-ness. I picked this book up because it was recommended for fans of Emily Wilde and Legends and Lattes and I think that is spot on for the audience it will resonate with.

Please give it a chance and I do not think it will steer you wrong!

Thank you NetGalley and Roots & Wings Press as well as the author! I hope to pick up more from her in the future. The world she created was lovely.

I almost think this book would have been better as a children’s chapter book or YA book. This book reminded me of Ella Enchanted. It had a great concept of a witch (Evelyn) being sent to a land that was cursed to see if she can save it, but I was really bored for majority of the book. It had some good characters – loved Archie the owl familiar and some of Evelyn’s neighbors. If you simply took out the love story with the herb merchant, it could have been a children’s chapter book.

The whole reason Evelyn went on this mission was so that she could be freed from her contract at the castle with a corrupt king. She is a royal witch representative of the one of the realm’s four covens. But I simply didn’t feel the urgency of wanting to be freed of this seven-year contract. She didn’t have that much time there left. She had other friend witches with the four covens. It may sound strange, but I wanted her life to be worse at the castle so I could feel her strong desire to be freed.

The mystery of the curse and town’s secrets just weren’t that exciting. Danielle Garrett tried to have twists and surprises, but they just fell flat for me. Maybe it was the narrator that made my mind wonder too much during the book? Maybe the cozy mystery vibe is not my cup of tea.

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Select for providing me with the advanced readers copy of the audiobook.

A Drop of Fortune is a cozy fantasy novel with a romance side plot that follows Evelyn Rosewood, the royal witch representing one of the realm's four covens, as she covertly attempts to heal a blight in a seaside town. While settling in, she befriends many of the local townsfolk and gradually enmeshes herself within the community.

This book didn't quite work for me - while I've enjoyed cozy fantasy previously, some of the aspects of the story fell a bit flat. I didn't fully understand the purpose of Archie, Evelyn's familiar, and often found him to be somewhat distracting from the rest of the story. I also listened to this as an audiobook and didn't vibe with the voice the narrator used for him as it felt a bit cartoonish. I enjoyed the romance between Evelyn and Corrin, but found her worries over her interactions with the other folks in town to be a bit overblown. Meanwhile, larger plot points like the conflict between the king and his brother end up being resolved in the background, and some of the less positive interactions with the townsfolk seem to get resolved almost too easily.

Thank you very much to Dreamscape Select and NetGalley for the advanced copy.

Overall, this story was very cute. There was a good amount of character and plot growth, though the plot, I feel, was the heavier focus.

I adored Evelyn and how she interacted in the world. I could tell the author was fully living in this character as she was writing. It felt like a realistic tone in all she did. From her magic broom/staff (which I would love to have one), her beautifully embroidered cloak, and her magic satchel (hello D&D bag of holding), it felt like she had accumulated all of these throughout a life lived.

Her owl familiar, Archie, was a hoot and a half (no pun intended.) His love of marmalade made me fall in love with him and his quirkiness. And the love story that brewed (pun definitely intended) between her and Coryn was so sweet. Her friendships with the other shop owners was also amazing to get to see. And SO MUCH LGBTQIA+ romance in here. Nereen, the dog, was a cutie patootie as well and I loved them.

As for the writing: plot twists were well thought out and had a good amount of tension without it feeling too tense and rushed. There were a lot of small lore drops we get to see without it being overbearing, which is nice and will, hopefully, lead into future books well. I enjoyed that there were other magical races that lived cohesively.

The narrator did a great job differentiating between the voices and was really fun to listen to as well!

I can't wait to see what else comes of this series.

🔮 Evelyn is a witch with a mission: with her potions and her familiar (an owl that I absolutely LOVED) she must solve the blight problem that plagues one of the towns in the kingdom and thereby earn her freedom

🫂 This book has been absolutely everything I expected from it: a cozy fantasy with magic, potions, lots of delicious-looking food and an extremely adorable romance

☕ If you liked Legends & Lattes, this book is for you. It's the perfect read to curl up with a blanket, a warm coffee and a piece of cake and just enjoy a quiet read

A Drop in Fortune would be a good read for those who love the fantasy realm with mythical beings and creatures. Personally, I was hoping for more of cozy witch romance and this book fell short in the romance department. I struggled to finish this book and ended up stopping at the 70% mark.

The narration was good and I enjoyed listening to Amanda Ronconi ... the story was just missing something for me.

Genre: Cozy Fantasy, Romantasy
Subgenre: Mystery
Spice Level: Sex on the page

A DROP OF FORTUNE reminds me a bit of The Spellshop and possibly Legends and Lattes.

There's multiple magical beings all living in the same town. Some have prejudices against another species. However, the majority of "people" are oh so nice. This actually reminds me of the people in A Psalm for the Wild-Built, and the narration was similar.

Our main character, Evelyn, is a witch. And she's at the port city to solve the blight affecting the crops in exchange for freedom from the king's service. She meets a grumbly man at the market, selling herbs. Of course, he's not actually that gruff. Evelyn's familiar is a talking owl—though I'm not sure how he assists her as her familiar; possibly something about protection, but it didn't seem to come into play.

The king's blustering, despotic ways are portrayed in the beginning, but we don't really get into the conflict between him and his brother (the usurper)—that's one thing that I expected to come around full circle. I also wanted a bit more about the shifty healer who feels threatened by Evelyn's presence. There were a few threads that dangled a bit for me.

I thought this was an enjoyable read. It's light and fluffy. And if you want a drop of magic and fortune, you've found the brew that will fill you.

Happy reading!

In the midst of the trend to make magic real and gritty, the world that Garrett introduces in this book is refreshingly cute and cozy. The main character and her supporting cast are unique and likeable and the romance is warm and well done. I'll be waiting for more of this series and checking out more by this author in the meantime!

This was a very sweet cozy fantasy - I really enjoyed Evelyn as our main character. Her familiar is also adorable. I will definitely be recommending this to my friends who enjoy cozy fantasy.
The audio was well done, clear, and enjoyable!

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Select for the advanced copy in return for my honest review.

This was such a cute and cozy book. Evelyn is a witch who specializes in potions. She is currently serving the king, who decides to send her on a task in a nearby port. She must figure out what is causing the blight there and find a way to stop it.

Some of the villagers are very unaccepting of her since she is a witch. While others are a little more kind. She opens up a potion shop in town and becomes close to a handsome herbalist who helps her with her potions.

One of my favorite characters was Evelyn's owl familiar, Archie. He was so sassy and sarcastic. I felt bad for him when his marmalade broke.

I have read many of Danielle Garret’s books so when she mentioned last year on her Facebook group that she was coming out with a cozy fantasy book I knew I had to read it. A Drop of Fortune was an excellent book and I enjoyed it very much.

If you liked Legends and Lattes then you will definitely enjoy this book. Evelyn is a witch who is tasked by the Royal Family to help remove a blight that has shrouded a once-thriving harborside town in despair. When she arrives at the town she meets a colorful cast of characters who may or may not be human who help her along her way. She finds a cozy cottage to live in and to run her potion shop. As she gets more familiar with the area she also finds love in a mysterious farmer who is holding on to a secret about his past.

This book had everything I enjoyed. A witchy tale, found family, cozy atmosphere, good pacing and a sweet romance. I highly recommend cozying up on the couch with a hot tea and reading this cozy fantasy this fall.

I would also recommend getting the audio. Amanda Ronconi is an excellent actress and she narrates all of Danielle Garrett’s books. I am a huge fan of Amanda as well, so check out the audio version!

I would like to thank the publisher for giving me an audio-arc in exchange for an honest review through NetGalley.

A Drop of Fortune was so dang cozy I just wanted to snuggle under the blankets with some hot cocoa while reading. It was low stakes with a super cute romance that reminded me of a mix between Legends and Lattes and the Spellshop.

We have such an interesting plot with a curse in a small town where half of the people are prejudiced against Evelyn because she's a witch, and that's where the true tension in this book lies. Yes, she's trying to break a curse. Yes, there's some crazy things going on with the king and the country might end up going to war, but is that the main focus? No. All of that gets thrown aside as we follow Evelyn as she tries to find her own way while navigating a world in which not everyone is okay with the fact that she's a witch. And this whole storyline was rough and beautiful.

I loved how everything came together in the end. I loved the romance, the magic, the worldbuilding. I loved the side characters. The love interest was amazing. I mean, overall, it was absolutely amazing.

Stuck serving a the tyrannical ruler of a kingdom on the brink of war, Evelyn is sent away to try to figure out what's causing the blight that's ruining half the kingdom's source of fresh vegetables. Although she presents herself as a healer, Evelyn finds herself facing an unfortunately high level of mistrust and prejudice after the town has faced witch curses in the past. Undeterred, Evelyn sets up shop as a potion maker and starts to discover some friends, including one dashing young man who happens to sell a lot of the herbs Evelyn needs to make her spells. But despite the cozy atmosphere, it's clear that if Evelyn doesn't figure out something fast, the blight will destroy everyone's livelihood, and she'll have to return to the cruelties of the king's court as a failure.

This had a lot stronger of a found family element than I was expecting, which was sweet. There are also a lot of fun details regarding craftsmanship and gardening. The ending wasn't exactly satisfying, but the characters and romantic elements were cute. Overall, I'd say this book lives up to its cover art.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this audio ARC. All opinions are my own.

This was cozy fantasy at its best! Exactly what I want out of cozy fantasy - great pacing, low stakes, found family, fun love, and just the right amount of backstory to have well developed characters. Add in an owl familiar, witchcraft, and healing, and you have just the right combination. I rec’d the audiobook, and the narration was solid and enjoyable. The love story was mature and had chemistry. I honestly adored so many characters and didn’t feel annoyed at the events of the story or someone’s emotions ever. It was just the perfect blend of a warm hug, and I’m so happy that I rec’d an ARC of it. If you want something a simple and feel good pallet cleanser, this is an excellent book to pick up! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

A Drop of Fortune
A Four Corners Coven Cozy Fantasy Romance
by Danielle Garrett
Narrated by Amanda Ronconi

I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley

I love anything Amanda Ronconi’s narration on everything I listen to of hers - she’s fabulous!

I love Danielle Garrett’s writing too on everything I listen to of hers as well.

This book is different from Danielle Garrett’s other books.

This book has the fun tone of books by Molly Harper and Helen harper - light, funny, sweet, full of snark, loveable quirky characters and romance.

The tale is kind of like Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree. There are towns, inns, taverns, cobblers, street merchants, etc.

It feels to me like part fantasy and part small town fantasy without being a part of our world.

I love it! It’s certainly different, but altogether pleasant!

I recommend this book to anyone who wants a bit of light reading that will make you smile and chuckle!

This was just a perfect cozy fantasy. It has a low-stakes plot that keeps moving forward and isn't boring. The characters are adorable and I'd love to be friends with them. The setting is like a Ren Faire come to life. I definitely plan on checking out this author's back catalog now. Oh, and the audiobook narrator did an excellent job bringing the story to life. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the audiobook!
