Snow Going Back is a fun, charming and festive read that gave me all the Hallmark movie vibes! With its small-town setting and an “enemies to lovers” trope, this book was the perfect way to kick off my holiday reading.
Kate’s people-pleasing tendencies (and her name 😉) had me rooting for her from the start, while her banter and tension with Sam—the rugged lumberjack/Abercrombie model—had me smiling from ear to ear. The mystery element added an extra layer of intrigue, keeping me hooked till the end.
While the emotional infidelity aspect may not be for everyone, Emma Tallon’s writing and flow made this story a memorable read. I can’t wait to see more from her in this genre!
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
This story is a departure from Emma's usual crime genre that we’re all familiar with.
The main character is Kate, who finds herself agreeing to Lance's proposal without fully realizing it.
We are then whisked away to Boston, where we meet Sam, a potential partner for her.
Overall, this is a fun romantic story with charming characters and a touch of mystery woven throughout. It’s a lovely and heartwarming read—perfect for curling up with when it’s dark and rainy outside. What more could you want from a cozy book?
Kate meets Sam in the US after fleeting her life back in England. A great read, I loved the setting of this book, and wanted everything to work out for Kate and Sam.
Snow Going Back by Emma Tallon is the first book I have read by this author. It had one of my favorite tropes- enemies to lovers but not the way this one was done. I want to like the main characters to enjoy the book, and I did not connect with or care for any of them.
I have only read this one by the author and will read others.
Thank you NetGalley, Emma Tallon and Bookouture for the copy of Snow Going Back. This is my personal review.
I gave this book two tries but eventually decided to DNF at around 16%. I found the writing style quite unenjoyable and the set up to be far too laborious to read though. The plot itself felt quite contrived and far too convenient to allow myself to become fully immersed in the story.
I would be interested in giving the authors future novels a try but alas, this one just wasn't for me.
Kate hates surprises, not just hates, detests surprises so getting two surprises in one day isn’t making for a great day. That said, Kate welcomed one surprise a lot more than the other! Who’d have thought a work trip to Boston would be more appealing than a marriage proposal?!?
What Kate faces when she heads Stateside is a car crash, not just in the real sense of the word. She’s got to decide who gets a much wanted and potentially lucrative state of affairs. Easy right? Not when you’ve got the housemate from hell. Kate and Sam clash like anything. Anyone would think they’re going through the war of the roses!!
Despite Kate’s reluctance to engage with her marriage preparations from afar (who wouldn’t – her mum sounds a nightmare that needed micromanaging) and the uncomfortable living situation, the curves of my mouth were raised. I smirked, I smiled, I grinned, I giggled at what Kate went through. Tallon got the emotions spot on.
Snow Going Back is just brilliant. If I didn’t know Emma Tallon was a crime thriller writer, I’d say she’s born to write rom-com fiction. I would never have believed this was her first foray into the lighter side of fiction. It ticked all the boxes for me! Is there more to come?!?
Emma Tallon, I’ve read many of your thrillers, but I loved your first women’s fiction book! It’s a delightful & heart-warming romantic comedy! I want more of this genre from you! The opposites-attract, enemies-to-lovers, forced-proximity romance was perfect! Kate learns about herself & gets insight into what she needs by reading Cora’s journals.
I loved your authors note:
“…whilst love will always be what we humans live for….there’s really only one person responsible for creating true happiness in our lives. Ourselves. The curtain doesn’t fall when the girl gets the guy….Romantic love isn’t the fairy tale. Life is. And the moment we realise that we hold the reins and we control our stories, that’s the moment it really begins.“
Thank you, Emma Tallon, Bookouture, & netgalley, for my copy! All opinions are my own.
Snow Going Back was a literal hallmark movie in my brain - it was the perfect “enemies” to lovers small town trope I needed 🥰
I fell in love with Kate and her badass-ery and related HARD with her people pleasing tendencies.
Kate and Sam’s antics had me giggling and kicking my feet - I was waiting for them to fall after all of their pranking. My personal favorite was hiding the tv remote!
If you like enemies to lovers with loads of laughs and a mix of holiday cheer and heartfelt emotion - this is the perfect book for you ❤️❄️🎄🛷
Thank you Net Galley for the ARC!
This book will put you in the Christmas mood. It's definitely a cute book. I would rate it 3.5 stars.
Kate accidentally says YES as the wrong time and ends up engaged to her boyfriend. She is not ready to give up her career for a house and kids. Luckily, her boss needs to her to go spend some time in another country dealing with a client estate. She then finds herself sharing a house with a man named Sam. They start to open up to each other while she's engaged and starts to realize she's not ready to get married just yet.
what a great wintery holiday read! Enemies to lovers is one of my favourite tropes, and it was really well done! The bickering and their little pranks in the beginning were hilarious to read about. However, this book was way more than just that. Yes, it was a great romance story (without any spice) but it kinda was also a story about finding yourself and being true to who you really are and going for what you really want.
The relationship between Kate and her mum wasn’t always the easiest, but her dad was so amazing and I was so glad that she had him!
I don't typically start off with the negative, but it has to do with the description of the book. The description says that Kate ran away from her boyfriend's proposal. I feel it is pertinent for the reader to know that she ran away AFTER the proposal - AFTER she wasn't honest that she didn't want to marry her boyfriend. AFTER her crazy mother started planning the wedding, and she went along with it.
This is important because she obviously isn't single when she goes to the East coast and meets Sam. This is why so many reviews are kind of upset about the whole "emotionally cheating" business. The book description sets you up to believe she had a breakup.
If you can move past that, you will find a very charming, easy, festive read with likeable characters and a great storyline. I loved the childish pranks between Sam and Kate and their obvious disdain for each other. I also appreciated Kate's growth throughout the book and how Kate found it herself. She seemed pretty relatable! She and Sam knew there was a line that they couldn't and wouldn't cross, so it made it all the sweeter when they finally were able to admit how they truly feel about each other. I didn't get the ick from emotional cheating; I just ended up getting the good feels because Sam was attractive and fun, and Lance was just an uppity turd.
All in all it was a good mix of Christmas and a slow budding romance. Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Snow Going Back was so much fun! I loved the way Emma dealt with the enemies to lovers element: I hated Sam as much as Kate did, especially when he drank all the milk, OMGGGGGGGG 😡😡😡
This was a cute enemies to lovers romance. II am not used to reading a romance by Emma Tallon. She is one of my favorite authors and did not disappoint.
Kate's boyfriend proposed to her and she accidently accepted. Now she wants out of it but doesn't want to disappoint anyone. She is a lawyer and is told that she has to go and take care of an estate and only she can do it. She meets up with a grumpy guy letting her know that the house she is in is his. The banter between these 2 was funny and they act like teenagers at first trying to up one another.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC to read.
Lance proposed to Kate unexpectedly and in front of her entire family. After she ran away she needed a break and was happy that a last minute trip to Boston popped up at work. Perfect timing and a perfect escape it is exactly what she needed. With the city filled with twinkle lights and the streets covered in fresh fallen snow she feels right at home. After a mix up at work she finds Sam standing in her kitchen. How could this happen? But with it being Christmas there is no place else for either of them to go, so they decide to work it out. It doesn’t take long for them to dislike each other and their horrible and annoying living habits. As they lighten up on each other they actually decide they may have more in common with each other than they thought. Lance unexpectedly arrives to visit Kate and now Kate must decide, does she return home with Lance or could Sam be the one?
Snow Going Back, written by author Emma Tallon is a wonderful and festive rom-com that had me laughing out loud. I loved the banter between Kate and Sam. They were so funny and I really liked them. Kate wasn’t a fan of surprises so when lance proposed and then surprised her in Boston, I immediately thought “awe, poor Kate”. I was completely entertained from cover to cover. I really enjoyed this cute story and I look forward to more books from this author. I highly recommend this book.
Snow Going Back by Emma Tallon was a sweet enemies-to-lovers rom-com!
I thought this a fun Christmas romance with great characters and good writing.
This book truly was a wonderful read, and I really enjoyed it!
I spent about 2 hours reading this book, got to the beginning of chapter 19 (36%) and had no desire to continue on with this story. The writing is fine, and I wouldn't be opposed to read something else by this author, but the plot isn't sitting well with me or keeping my interest. Not to mention, all the major characters (including the main couple) are irritating me. I understand that there needs to be room for characters to change and develop, but this far in I sadly am not attached to them enough to see them progress.
From the book's description, I understood that the FMC would get engaged at the beginning of the book, but then end up meeting someone else. That alone made me a little weary going into the story. Plus, the premise of her having to leave for work and be away for awhile was not only hard to believe (even when attempting to suspend disbelief for the sake of it being fiction) but also took too long to set up.
For a romance novel to not meet the MMC until chapter 10 (19%), still have little interaction by chapter 19 and then to not really like the FMC yet, gives me little incentive to continue.
Again, while the writing overall is enjoyable, the plot would need to be reworked quite a bit for it to work for me.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the E-ARC. I am very much fifty fifty on this book. The story line was good but I just could not get behind the MFC and that blocked me from probably truly enjoying this book to the fullest. While there we lots of parts I did enjoy I felt like while it dragged on the non important parts the parts that were important were rushed. But overall I did enjoy the story.
Kate runs an away from her new fiancé and her life across the pond to sort out a case in Vermont.
I could have cheerfully placed her overbearing mother in the nearest trash can.
I thought Lance wasn’t a bad guy he just had outdated ideas about marriage. I did feel sorry for him because I think he was really heartbroken.
I laughed heartily when Kate and Sam circle each other like hissing cats. From putting each other in jail to all the other stunts, it was obviously foreplay.
It has a nice ending but I was hoping for an epilogue..
Too many toxic relationships in this book for me. Also, I didn’t realize from the description that the FMC was engaged and cheating with the MMC.
Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC.
4 stars - I totally enjoyed this one and I’m surprised at some of the rather harsh reviews for this title. I really connected with the FMC Kate, who tries too hard to please her family & friends and hates surprises; which leads to an unexpected and mistakenly-accepted marriage proposal followed almost immediately by a long work trip where she meets grumpy Sam in a super cute Vermont town. I really liked how Kate ’s character grew along with her backbone. I also really appreciated that this one was “closed door” and found it both quick and easy to read. Many thanks to NetGalley & the publisher for my copy
