Dare to be different.
What an inspiring book to join this series of biographies for young children to see how an ordinary child can achieve wonderful things and make an extraordinary contribution within the wider world.
Little people, big dreams is a delightful, ever growing library of books bringing the famous and less familiar personalities within the reach of our inquisitive sons and daughters. Now for me, grandchildren who love books.
A series with a nice balance of text and accompanying wonderfully imaged illustrations. With a grown-up summary of the character’s life and real photos.
Here, the world of Art can be touched upon, perhaps not immediately an interest of our children in their early years.
However they will see an exceptional Salvador Dali succeed by being an individual, driven by a desire to succeed with a natural gift in drawing and painting.
I was moved by parents that perhaps spoiled and pampered their son. Understandable in part having earlier lost another child, but empowering for little Salvador, surrounding him with love and encouragement.
Hopefully, the book will help little ones appreciate art and taking risks to push established boundaries. Often we can labelled and as the day become square pegs in round holes. Dali conformed in part but allowed his imagination and talent full reign. He dared to be different.
I love the Little People Big Dreams series and this one didn’t disappoint. Even as someone who loves art, children’s books and history I found myself learning from this book. I think this series continues to help inspire children to ask ‘why not?’
The newest addition of the Little People, Big Dreams collection follows Salvador Dalí. The structure of the text is laid out in a similar pattern to other books in the collection, starting with Dalí’s childhood, moving then to his accomplishments throughout his lifetime, and then finally returning to a young Dalí who is still dreaming. The book, like the series, encourages kids to dream big and demonstrates the ability to achieve. As with the other books, this book’s backmatter includes a timeline, a slightly more detailed biography, and further resources (the most interesting part being that one of the resources is a museum mentioned within the text!).
The text itself is written by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, who does a decent job at summarizing Dalí’s life—that being said, there’s still something left to be desired with how quick she moves through Dalí’s achievements and milestones. For instance, her definition of surrealism did nothing to create an understanding of what the movement was, other than “weirdness,” and no amount of age-appropriateness/simplicity could excuse it.
The real gem within this book, however, is the art by Mariona Tolosa Sisteré. The illustrations are colorful and fun for the youngest of children. Older readers may even find references to Dalí’s work scattered in these splash pages.
This book was reviewed digitally thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group.
I love educational children's books, and this one is no exception. In an accessible and attractive form it introduces the small readers to a colorful and quirky world of one of the world's most famous artists. Stunningly beautiful and artistic illustrations complete the image. I would, however, appreciate more insights into Dalí's works, with visual representative, adapted to the style of this book; something like the illustrator's version of Dalí's paintings. I think that would give the young readers better idea about what Dalí and surrealism was about.
Thank you, Netgalley, for giving me a copy of this book in an exchange for an honest review.
An interesting little biography for children about an iconic artist. This offered a glimpse into Salvatore Dali's life and inspiration, the illustrations are cute but detailed, however I found the underlying message to be a bit less memorable and inspiring than some of the others in the series.
I love that Little People Big Dreams is branches into worldwide stories. I as an adult learn a lot about popular artists where I know their work but not much about their lives. The message in this story, to be yourself not matter what, is inspiring.
Who is this smiling person wearing a beret and a really singular mustache? His name is Salvador and he was born in Spain, was an eccentric child, and loved to paint pictures in a different way. He has a large section in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MOMA) in NYC and built the Salvador Dali Museum is in St. Petersburg, FL.
Dare to be different!
The illustrations by Mariona Tolosa Sisteré are simple, colorful, and expressive.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or your local public library!
I requested and received a temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Quarto Publishing Group/Frances Lincoln Children's Books via NetGalley. Thank you!

First, many thanks to Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, the author, Mariona Tolosa Sisere, the illustrator, Frances Lincoln Children's Books, and NetGalley for the privilege of being able to read and review this cute children's picture biography book. I will share my review to Goodreads, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble upon release.
I adored this book about Salvador Dali! I starts when he is a young boy, his family life, early career and surrealism, his turn to more traditional painting techniques, etc. The illustrations are lovely and unique, and give lots to look at and colors that are striking and interesting. I think this is a great way to introduce younger children 3-5 to surrealism, art, and Salvador Dali. This book covers the major points in a way children can relate to and be motivated by! There is also a timeline and some real photos of Dali at the end along with more biographical context that parents can share with kids to stir more discussions and learning about art and artists.
The cover is incredibly cute and eye-catching, and I would definitely buy this book as a gift for a kid in my life at some point! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to introduce their children to history, art, artists, and entertaining true stories.
My daughter loves these books and Dalí has always been one of my favourite artists - so I was excited when I saw this one pop up! As expected, it’s a great little introduction to Dalí and his work, with the super important message to always be yourself, embrace your weirdness and to live each day to the fullest. A brilliant little book.
This is one of my favorite books in this series. Dali was an unusual artist because he achieved great success while he was still alive. They could tell he was brilliant when he was young, and he took opportunities and built relationships that helped him grow even more. Simply told, the story has cute pictures and tells a big story. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
What a great little book! Dalí is the perfect story for kids to keep dreaming and pursuing their dreams, working on their talents, trusting their gut. Also, for us parents to help our kinds succeed in their own paths. It's written in a way that kids can understand and that can open their curiosity about art and great artists.
Another fantastic book in the series.
My four year old and nine year old love the Little People, Big Dreams series. This latest book focuses on the life of painter Salvador Dali, presenting his childhood and career with simple text and quirky illustrations. Many of the artist's paintings can be recognised in elements of the illustrations, making this a fun read for parents as well.
A recommended read for fans of Salvador Dali and fun educational reads for children.
Thank you to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing group for providing me with a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book is part of a series that I quite enjoy reading. It's always very informative, but I don't always enjoy the style of the illustrations, which is precisely the case for this one. I liked learning about Dali's life and journey, but the visuals weren't my cup of tea.
In this entry in the long running series, kids meet Surrealist artist Salvador Dali. He had his own way of creating art and was a unique character. What influenced and inspired him from when he was young Salvador until he was well known? Find out in this story that includes illustrations that are a bit eccentric as seems fitting. Note that there is additional information at the end of the book.
This is a solid entry in the long running series. It is always good to spend time with a child who had dreams.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this title. All opinions are my own.
"Salvador Dali" is an educative picture child book. The book teaches the kids about one of the greatest artists in the world, Salvador Dali. His childhood was interesting, his studies were very inspiring, and his work was worth it. His wife Gala was his Muse and great support. My children love this book because they love the painting and enjoy painting of his best painting as a model . I really enjoyed reading this book from NetGalley and I am thankful for it!
A wonderful book filled with delightful illustrations! What a way to teach kids that being a little different can have a beautiful outcome. My kids got a kick out of him hanging a tooth on the ceiling!
This young reader story about Salvador’s Dali is written and drawn in a way that seems fitting to the eccentric painter. It gives a brief glimpse into the reknowned artist/creative’s life and how his talent was fostered and encouraged.
I wish it had incorporated some of his most famous pieces of art, even as an addendum at the end.
Another great read from an amazing series.
I think everyone has heard of Salvador Dali, although to be honest I didn't know a great deal about him other than him being known for his art.
I learnt about his life in an easy to understand book along with great illustrations.
What I particularly liked about this book is that it touched on him being different and people laughing at him - I think it's important younger children are shown that even if they are different, that they can still go on to do great things.
A very interesting biography about a fascinating and eccentric painter that helped define a period in art history.
Concise and easy to understand, this book is a perfect introduction to one of the greatest artists of our time! The illustrations are whimsical and fantastical, just like the art of Dali. A combo of fun facts and inspiration for budding artists!
