I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review, A story about a giraffe born in Tennessee without spots and how it's hard to fit in when your different.
I absolutely The Spotless Giraffe by Peter Millett! The Spotless Giraffe is such a read and is inspired by a real life spotless giraffe in Tennessee. Being from Tennessee and having a giraffe being my favorite animal, I loved The Spotless Giraffe from beginning to end. The Spotless Giraffe is a perfect book to read at anytime for any age. I highly recommend The Spotless Giraffe by Peter Millett! My review is also on Goodreads.
I don’t think that I could live this sweet story anymore than I did.
First off, this is based on a real giraffe that was born into the Bright Zoo in Tennessee. My son absolutely loved reading about the REAL Kipekee at that zoo.
Next, I loved how the author makes it known that Kipekee is happiest when they are themselves…a giraffe without spots. You don’t have to look exactly like anyone else to be happy. Being unique makes you special and YOU!
This was a wonderful story and perfect if you have an animal loving kiddo or you want to remind them to remain uniquely themself.
My preschool class loved this book! They asked me to read it several times! Thanks for the copy!
The children love animals and anything silly! I'm sure it will be read many more time.
Your family is going to love this fun and heartwarming story about Kipekee. Kipekee is a spotless giraffe who wants to fit in on her first day of school. She is shy and has a hard time speaking up for herself. She struggles with being clumsy while trying to fit in, she even tries to disguise herself like the other animals to fit in. With the help of amazing friends she soon learns she doesn’t have to fit in. She is wonderful just the way she is and that everyone is unique and their differences should be celebrated.
This story is a wonderful and fun way to teach children all about the importance of being themselves and accepting others as they are. It shows the importance of friendship and encouragement. This book creates a great way to get ready for your child's first day of school or meeting new friends. The adorable illustrations are bold and bright with fun animals that you can see how they are interacting and how they feel.
This book would also be great in an early childhood classroom, the possibilities are endless.
Enjoy this little adventure with your little ones.

Such an adorable and heartwarming book for little kids who love the Zoo and animals. There is a very special lesson inside this fun story - that is the bonus for the little ones! You can be different from all your friends and family and neighbors. But it is nothing to be ashamed about or feeling sorry about. Your differences should be accepted and celebrated! In the Zoo School, Kipekee (the no-spot giraffe) is unable to find the class which she fits into, since she seems to be different and unique than other animals. But, finally, they do find out where Kipekee fits in by her other characteristic features! Lots of fun moments and bright colorful illustrations in this story.
Read it to my 6-year-old daughter, and both of us enjoyed the story. The illustrations are also lovely. This is quality children's literature.
I like children's books based on true stories and this one was lots of fun. The art was beautiful. I would recommend this book to patrons with young kids looking for books on a wide-range of topics including, animals, first day of school, being different, and self-acceptance. I liked the blurb about the real spotless giraffe at the end.
I thought it was really interesting that this book was based off a real-life giraffe who was born without spots. I think kids will appreciate that you can belong to a group even if you are not exactly the same.
Fun exploration of different exotic animals as Kipekee searches for her place among them.
The Spotless Giraffe is a new children’s book written by Peter Millett and illustrated by Alison Hawkins based on the imagined first day of “school” for Kipekee, the little giraffe born without the usual spots. She’s solid brown. Since she doesn’t have spots like the giraffes that student helpers have seen in the past, they aren’t sure what animal she actually is and end up taking her to classes for animals who share other common characteristics. As she has a brown coat like a camel, they first try to incorporate her into the camel class, or because her long neck reminds them of the llamas, they try her in their class. Each time, though, some other physical feature is missing, but thinking her missing element will come later as she gets bigger, they come up with a replacement to let her fit in and feel more comfortable. They’re rather big-hearted this way. However, when their alternatives don’t work out, they keep trying another group.
Parents and children can enjoy this fun, simple story on more than one level. While there are humorous attempts to find Kipekee’s class, there is also the important theme of being oneself as they try to make the little giraffe into something she’s not.
I recommend THE SPOTLESS GIRAFFE to parents of young children and for reading aloud in a group.
This is a super cute story from the text to the illustrations. I think it would be an excellent story for kids in Grades K-2. It explores the world through the eyes of a spotless giraffe that does not seem to fit in anywhere because he does not look the same as others. It is a great analogy for how many children feel at school and in other large gatherings. I feel the message about being you and celebrating your uniqueness is important for this age group. The book is now available as it was released Oct. 1, 2024.
Thank you Net Galley, Peter Millet and Quatro Publishing for allowing me to preview this title. The opinions expressed are my own.
The Spotless Giraffe is a story of new beginnings, finding your spot, and acceptance. For any kids that love animals and the zoo, this will be an especially fun read. It is very simple and easy to understand for toddlers. I do think it is a little too nail on the head for older kids, so I suggest ages 2-4. I love that it is based on an actual giraffe and there is a blurb at the end on the animal.
Love the way this story teaches a moral lesson through a loveable character, that is based on a real animal. Children will connect with the character in the story and then make further real connections learning about the real spotless giraffe.
The Spotless Giraffe by Peter Millet. The Spotless Giraffe is such a cute zoo book. I have not saw a spotless giraffe but having children read the book they would find out you do not have to be perfect to fit in. I cannot wait to read the book to my granddaughter.
All children in my family, daughters and grand children now have loved animals and visiting the zoo.
Here is a book that was inspired by the birth of a giraffe in captivity that had not spots or discernible pattern on their coat. Kipekee which means ‘unique’ in Swahili.
I liked the story as it is initially all about conforming and trying to fit in. Then moves on, into becoming accepted, and not being excluded due to being different from others.
Young people are far less judgemental and the lessons here will not be lost on them. They see the person first, they have no inherent prejudice and would see young Kipekee as a giraffe without any problem.
Scope here for wider issues to be discussed about school and wider society. Beautifully illustrated and set in a zoo where the animals can learn and grow together.
I also liked the information at the end of the book about the real Kipekee and the links to care and consider the needs for conservation and protection for giraffes in the wild.
Giraffes are not a go to animal or regular cuddly toy so it was good to share this interesting story with my grandchildren and see their responses.
We enjoyed this book so much.
If your child feels like a fish out of water, its a great book to read and show inclusivity,
Also a great book to introduce around the first day of school.
What a fun and light hearted story about embracing our uniqueness and finding our place. I love that this story is also based upon a real life giraffe named Kipekee. The art draws you in and perfectly accompanies the story. A perfect book to use in the classroom, in therapy, or behavioral skills training with kiddos.
This is a story about learning where you fit in, or simply standing out! Kipekee goes to her first stay of school, and as a giraffe with no spots, she’s not sure what class she belongs in. New friends try to help her figure out her dilemma along the way in creative ways of helping her fit in. When Kipekee feels like she doesn’t quite fit anywhere, she reminds herself proudly of all her amazing qualities. She realizes she DOES belong in the giraffe class, even if she is different with no spots. Her friends helping her and Kipekee realize “You don’t have to have spots to be a giraffe!” A class party is had, and all are welcoming and accepting of someone a little different. This story is a great reminder to children to just be themselves, and you will find your tribe! I received an arc copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
So cute!!! My favorite animal is a giraffe so I knew I had to read this one to my boys. They loved this story and it has a great lesson about how not everyone looks the same!
The Spotless Giraffe is a 32 page children's book featuring a spotless giraffe named Kipekee who was born at the Brights Zoo in Limestone, TN. Kipekee is only the 3rd spotless giraffe to have ever been (known to be) photographed.
This lovely children's book has other zoo animals help Kipekee "go to school" by providing props for her to blend in with other creatures. Really the book stresses the importance of just being yourself and loving your uniqueness. (Kipekee is Swahili for unique.).
Many thanks to NetGalley and Happy Yak (the publisher) for providing the opportunity for me to read the advance review copy of The Spotless Giraffe in exchange for an honest review. Publication date is Oct 1, 2024.
