We enjoyed this book immensely. My 5-year-old loves learning about things packaged in a fun way. I don't love spiders but was also interested in all it had to say.
Great non-fiction read for kids, told in a compelling, propulsive way as the 6 spiders "compete" for the title of deadliest. A little on the scary side, but in the end the lesson is that spiders aren't that deadly! Thanks to NetGalley and Norton Young Readers for the eARC!
This is such an informative and interesting graphic novel. I really had a lot of misconceptions about venomous spiders and was relieved to learn they are not as prolific as I thought. Plus I learned a lot about how interesting they are. I know my elementary school-aged sons will enjoy this book and I recommend it for schools and libraries.
I love this book!!! I honestly thought that I wouldn't like this book but I actually had such a good time reading this book. There is a lot of information packed into such a short book, but it wasn't overwhelming AND it was organized into a really fun and engaging format. It was such a smart idea for the author to give this book a game show kind of theme, and it worked really well! Additionally, the author was able to include numerous fun facts while staying on-topic and using facts that were still relevant to the main idea. This book was so educational for readers, and I even learned a lot of new stuff! Lastly, the illustrations managed to make these deadly spiders...cute? How is that even possible? But, anyways, the illustrator is obviously very talented, because they made spiders utterly adorable and worked with the author to make this book wildly fun.
Bravo!!
An absolutely perfect book for a kid who loves the creepiest, and crawliest of critters. This book offers a thorough explanation of each spider, their defense systems as well as their venoms effect on the human body. The cartoon nature of the drawings makes these more intense facts more palatable visually. As someone who is actually not a huge fan of spiders, this book was the easiest to handle spider book I am yet to come across.
Are the world’s deadliest spiders really deadly? Meet the top six deadliest spiders and learn about their superpowers and how their venom can affect humans.
Curious about the world’s most dangerous spiders? The Deadliest Spider offers an engaging journey into the lives of these deadly creatures, uncovering surprising facts and showcasing the importance of spiders in our ecosystems. With vibrant, realistic illustrations, The Deadliest Spider captivates young readers, presenting fascinating facts in an approachable, easy-to-understand way. Fans of the Who Would Win? series will find this book a perfect companion, combining thrilling facts with vivid visuals to bring the spider world to life.
This is a very fun book about spiders because it lets the reader get involved. Rate these spiders, tell us which one looks the most dangerous, and then learn more about them like what it is that actually makes some spiders dangerous. The pictures are bright and fun, and the writing is engaging. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this.
Beginning a new non-fiction series "The Deadliest: Spider" lists six highly venomous spiders and asks readers to guess who is the deadliest one. The illustrated pictures may disappoint some kids used to highly detailed real photos from National Geographic books, but they help soften the more tenderhearted and arachnaphobic readers. The illustrations by Max Temescu straddle the line between accurate and not too scary, not veering into anthropomorphized cartoons. Eleanor Spicer Rice's humorous tone matches well with it, especially when they veer into humor like imagining what a "mouse spider" should look like.
In terms of weaknesses, the formatting could have used more thought. The gold standard of the "Who Would Win?" series clearly lays out the stats for each animal for kids to visualize. This version waits until the penultimate page spread for a "death-o-meter" to set the spiders in order, and not with any clear explanation for why one is deadlier than the other. Other aside facts are placed in the middle of the narrative panels, breaking up the flow.
Verdict: a good addition for kids who might be too young for "Science Comics" and have already burned through all the "Who Would Win?" books. Its appeal is in how it softens the pictures and descriptions of the spider venom, but doesn't provide the concrete statistics and gruesome details older kids may love in these kinds of books.
I hate spiders but I love this book. It was fascinating, informative and entertaining. I want lots of books like this!! Amazing.
Okay if you have an elementary library or classroom you need this book! The Deadliest: Spider is such a fun and engaging book and I didn't expect that it was a graphic novel which makes it SO MUCH COOLER! I loved how it had key vocabulary words pulled out and defined. Kids will absolutely eat this up as it talks about the features of different spiders and how deadly their venom is. Plus it's a competition of which one is the deadliest and kids love to pick a winner. My five year old was enthralled and didn't want to stop reading. This would be great for K-5 and would be fun to read aloud a bit at a time. This is an incredible example of how exciting and engaging non-fiction can be! I think even older struggling readers will enjoy this one. Absolutely 5 stars and beyond!
