This story is set in real-life South London and revolves around the main character, Lily Wickham. Lily works hard for a better life alongside her husband, Jack, their two children, and her granddaughter.
The narrative is emotional at times, which adds depth and intrigue, making it a compelling read. The writing is well-crafted, drawing you in and keeping you engaged with the question: will she or won’t she?
Overall, it’s a great story.
Thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
For Lily, she wanted to have a good life, as well for her family.
But, then her daughter got pregnant and made a decision to keep the baby.
Lily got a job in a company and then started an affair with her boss.
Trying to keep it a secret and when her husband finds out, the ending is what none of them imagined.
I highly recommend this book.
This was a brilliant read about Lily and her husband Jack and 2 daughter Beverly and Caroline .Lily always wanted to better herself and family only for her daughter Beverly to have an illegitimate daughter..Lily gets a job for a law firm in the city. This story tells of what happens to her and her family when she gets this job.Thank you to Netgalley and Boldwood for letting me read this book.
First book I have read by this author and so loved the style of writing. From page one I was engrossed - I enjoyed the story of Lily and how she wanted to better herself and family but felt disappointment with her own daughter who had a baby out of wedlock. Having been married a long time felt she had grown apart from her husband and entered into adultery with devastating consequences. It was a lovely read full of emotion. Highly recommend
Family saga whose main character was incredibly self centred and only thought of herself. Didn't really enjoy it.
A emotional ride and historical saga read. Lily is struggling with her daughter and her daughters baby. Lily loves both but doesn't know what to do. A story that feels real and has been thoroughly researched. It's enjoyable and suspenseful.
I loved this book. I recommend this for people who like real life family history especially the notes from the author at the end. Thank you to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC.
Beautifully written based on true facts an emotionally moving saga.Loved Lily’s choice from beginning to end.#netgalley #boldwood
Read and reviewed in exchange for a free copy from Netgalley. Having read the heartbreaking author's note at the end, this is a difficult book to review. Based on real life events and the experience of the author, Lily's War is an engaging and well-written book, where the characters and storylines are really brought to life. Although I didn't particularly like most of the characters, I was interested in their story, and the end was unexpected, heartfelt, and horrifying.
Wow - that's all I can say. If this book was entirely fictional, it'd be good, but the fact it's based on real life events is somewhat heart breaking. I think this will stay with me for a long time.
Really enjoyed this book. Once I started I couldn’t put it down! A great family saga full of emotions!
This book should come with a disclaimer as once you start reading you aren’t going to want to walk away.
I have been through an emotional wringer… a tearjerker! I was completely absorbed from the first page… My heart was in my throat
Firstly thank you Netgalley for this Arc
What a family saga based in the war just loved it
So many emotions in this book
The story is based around the Wickham family. Jack who comes across as having a heart of gold and patience of a saint and wife Lily who has moved from factory work to become a Legal secretary and cares for her family Caroline and Beverley who has young daughter Kerry. What could go wrong, life got in the way as it so often does. The thing I kept thinking when reading was that so much of it would be classed as acceptable today. Then it was maybe Lily got her priorities wrong, who are we to judge. It was a quick read as I just longed to find out what happened.
I just didn’t take to Leonard's character from the off, he was hard to relate to. My favourite character was Jack, brought my own father to mind. Least favourite was Gerald Irwin, using his position of power. The author described family life beautifully.
Lilly's Choice by May Ellis
Living in South London, Lily has always longed for a better life for her family. And when she secures a job at a City law firm, her dreams look like they may finally come true.
But Lily’s hopes are shattered when her teenage daughter Beverley falls pregnant, with the father nowhere to be seen. Lily loves the child, but worries about Beverley and her illegitimate baby's future.
Really enjoyed this one , yes it was her daughter that became pregnant but the repercussions of it had a big effect on the wider family and This is what this story is about .
Lily’s dream was for a better future for herself, husband and two daughters. That dream was shattered when her eldest daughter became pregnant and decided to keep the baby. Discontented with her life, Lily embarked on an affair with her boss, Leonard. Their secrets and lies resulted in a tragedy that changed all of their lives forever. A well written book.
