Rainey Royal by Dylan Landis captures the essence of the seventies, as experienced by a young woman. Rainey is a neglected child who grows up to be a neglected adult. She has friends, but even most of these relationships are tenuous. Throughout this story, which is difficult to read at times, the author draws you in and almost forces you to care about Rainey. Sometimes her actions are deplorable, but you root for her nonetheless. Recommended coming-of-age story for readers looking for a flashback to a previous decade.
