It is difficult to write a review of a book that, although it is fiction, tells a great truth. I didn't know this historical part and before starting the book I wanted to learn more about what had happened. And more, having read the author's first words.
The Mountain Meadows Massacre was a tragic event that occurred on September 11, 1857 in southern Utah, where a group of pioneers from Arkansas, known as the Baker-Fancher wagon train, were attacked while traveling to California. Approximately 120 men, women and children were killed. Only 17 children under the age of seven survived.
Knowing that, and having read a little more, I embarked on this sad and terrifying story that has so much to tell us. How many of these things we read have been real, that's the scariest thing. Because I feel that these cases are one of those where reality surpasses fiction and no one could have written events as horrible as those we read here and those that have really happened.
I think that one has little say in this type of book because I feel that the author has left a little piece of her soul in this book and that she really had the need to tell what happened. To expose your truth to the world. And that is something that I will always value.
Thank you very much Dynamite Books for the ARC I read through NetGalley, a change from an honest review.
This book is based off of 3 POV’s of women that were involved in the 1857 Mountain Meadow Massacre in Utah. The story shows what women will do to protect and save their families. This is my first book by Noelle Ihli but I’ve heard wonderful things about her other books. I’ve seen that her normal genre is psychological thriller. But I was excited to see that one had historical fiction/non-fiction aspects as that’s my other favorite genre.
Three women who lead totally different lives are connected by one of the most brutal mass slayings in US history, the Mountain Meadow Massacre, in the 1850’s. Each woman has had a unique and tragic story to tell about the harsh realities of the times.
Wow, to be honest Ihli is one of my favorite authors so I went into this totally blind knowing I would love it and I did! It is not her usual genre and it teetered on more historical fiction but it gave me all the feels. This is an epic journey through a time that did not have a lot of hope, especially if you were a woman. The storytelling that was done was incredibly powerful and held so much meaning. Give this book a chance, you will not regret it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Dynamite Books for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
This book was listed as a thriller and I was excited to read especially after reading the warnings but this book is in no way a thriller. It is a Historical Fiction which is nothing I ever read. I was lost the entire time with all the characters and the travelling. So this book was just not for me.
I do appreciate the details and research that went into writing this book. so for that I give 2.5 stars. I will check out more books from this author. This did not shy me away from her.
None Left to Tell by Noelle West Ihli was a great historical thriller story!
It’s a heartbreaking and tragic read!
You won't be able to put this down and it will surely stick with you for a long time to come.
The writing is excellent in this one. But just not something I could get into but I wanted to try. Gives me little house on the prairie vibes with a thrilling twist
Thank you to netgalley and dynamite books for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. This author is an automatic read for me and I was excited to read her newest creation. This book is more historical true crime is a dryer read for me. For those reasons, I rated this book 1.5 stars rounded to two stars. Unfortunately due to the heavy history and rather dry content, I just had a harder time getting into this book. I think she did a great job with her research and I look forward to reading her next book.
Friends. Read this book.
This is not Noelle's typical thriller. There's definitely some suspense and shock, but this is historical fiction - a true story retold from the perspectives of multiple womens' experiences at the time. I've read about the Mountain Meadows Massacre and knew quite a bit about it, but Noelle has spent years researching and brings in so many details and has wrapped them up into story full of hope and so much heartbreak. Humanizing the history makes everything so much more relatable and devastating. It's so important to be a witness to the pain and the truth and I think Noelle accomplished this in such a well written and emotional way.
Noelle Ihli's latest book is a different type of thriller than what I've read in the past and I really enjoyed it! None Left to Tell is a haunting tale of the Mountain Meadows Massacre that took place in late 1850's Utah where a wagon train traveling from Arkansas to California was massacred by the Mormons in the area.
I don't know much about the LDS faith and the history of the LDS church, so I learned a lot from this book. The author did a fantastic job of portraying the characters in a way that really made you connect with them and their struggles between the morality of the massacre and their devotion to their faith and following what their church leaders say.
I'd say this story is more historical fiction based closely on a true story/event rather than a thriller, but I enjoyed it all the same and won't hesitate to read anything Noelle Ihli writes.
Thank you to NetGalley and Dynamite Book for the digital ARC. My review is honest and voluntary.
Based on true events surrounding the 1857 Mountain Meadow Massacre in Utah, we follow three strong women doing their best to survive and protect their families. While this is more historical fiction, there are many thrilling elements that kept me absolutely hooked.
This was the first book I’ve read by Noelle Ihli and it will not be the last! To say I was absolutely captivated from the very first chapter is an understatement. Thank you so much to NetGalley and publisher for this ARC!
This is not the usual type of books (historical) I read, but I seen lots of good reviews.
This is based on one of the bloodiest massacre, the Mountain Meadows Massacre, which I had no knowledge about.
This book is powerful, emotional, and educative. Make sure to read the author’s note and the afterwords at the end. There’s more historical information about the Mountain Meadows Massacre.
The story is told in different point of the view from 3 woman, Lucy, Sally and Katrina. Occasionally, there is a few from Nancy - and somehow, they’re all connected through the story.
Katrina and Nancy are in a group travelling to California and unfortunately were being captive in the Meadows.
Sally has been “gifted” to a man a his fourth wife and tries to do the best that she can to adapt to her new lifestyle.
Lucy, a Mormon, was cast away because of her religious views. But now, she heard that those that cast her and her family away are coming through Utah to go to California. She decided this time, she wouldn’t run and will try to make a difference.
This book was heart wrenching. I have cried while reading before but knowing deep down that this is based on true events, that so many people have lost their lives… I could not stop crying. Like ugly crying!!! My poor heart! I definitely recommend as this is part of history and sadly, not many know about it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Noelle for the chance to read this as an ARC.
None Left to Tell is now available!
Going into this book, I knew what the main event was as had seen Noelle write about it and (briefly) her connection to it. That didn’t reduce the suspense.
I was thinking “when’s it going to happen, when’s it going to happen” and when it did start happening…. Noelle held the suspense, really getting you in there with the characters, wondering what the outcome would be, wondering who will make it out alive.
This book was beautifully written from four character perspectives. The part that really had my mouth drop open was the afterword.
I had expected that the characters were fictional, amalgamations of people who *could* have been there. This is not the case.
Noelle has researched so deeply, and been so true to the events, that she has kept the real names of people who were really there, and suffered through this.
What’s more, is that when choosing placeholder names, Noelle actually chose names that she later found out *were actually the children’s names.* If that doesn’t give you chills that someone has been guiding her through… well, there was also a mysterious text message, which could be a story on its own.
It’s chilling that there may be forces at work to get this story told.
Thank you, Noelle, for being their messenger.
My first historical thriller and my oh my Noelle Ihli did a phenomenal job writing and telling their story. It was a book that needed to be told.
It’s definitely more Historical than thriller. There’s definitely some thrilling moments and some sad moments but most of all it’s an oh my gosh that actually happened!
To be honest I had never heard of the Mountain Meadows Massacre. I’m glad I read this book because it’s based on the true events.
You will love some of the characters and you will cry for them like I did. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a historical book based on true events.
I had never heard of the Mountain Meadows Massacre before, so I went into this book having no idea how it was going to play out. Very powerful and informative. It was quite sad to get through, but I enjoyed it
DNF
Was very slow, disjointed writing, couldn’t get into it very sorry.
Characters I couldn’t gel or engage with. The setting and nature of historical story I wasn’t enjoying.
Liked other books by the author, just not this one so did not finish.
None Left to Tell by Noelle W. Ihli is such a heartbreaking story. This is the first book that I have read of hers and it won't be the last. This is a historical fiction book but it is definitely a thriller in it's own way.
It recounts true events of the Mountain Meadows Massacre. I had never heard of this massacre before and I will say that the way she wrote the events made me feel like I was there and that was such a scary feeling.
The story is told in the POVs of three women: Katrina, Lucy and Sally (Kahpeputz) and as you read you learn of the horrors that they each went through, especially what happened with Katrina's family. I do urge you to check trigger warnings on this book however I strongly encourage everyone to read it. The story is so tragic but it is so important to learn about this tragic event. This story is one that will stay with me for a long time.
Thank you Netgalley and Dynamite Books. All opinions are my own.
I was ELATED to receive this ARC!!
Noelle Ihili is one of my favorite auto read authors!
However I struggled to get into this one.
The writing style of this book is totally different than her previous & not what I was expecting.
The character names were hard to pronounce & jumped around so much. I was confused who was who &what was going on.
(There is a character list provided in the book, but still)
I appreciate the author going outside the box & sharing a historical event not known to many! (Mountain meadows massacre)
I still look forward to reading future books by Noelle!
Huge thanks to Noelle & netgalley for this ARC!
Thank you net galley for this advanced reads copy. I went into this story totally blind and was pleasantly surprised that this story was based on a true event. Following these three women stories was both heroic and at times heartbreaking. This is one story that will stick with me for some time. I love Noelle West Ihli’s writing, looking forward to reading more!
Thank you to NetGalley, Dynamite, and Noelle West Ihli for this book. I’ve loved everything I’ve read by Ihli and this book is no different. What a powerful read.
While this wasn’t as “easy” as some other books, it was still worth the read. I’ve never heard of the Mountain Meadows Massacre prior to this book, so I was Intrigued I could Learn something new while reading.
I’d like to thank Netgalley, Noelle West Ihli, and Dynamite Books for the ebook. This was a profound read, and I always appreciate Noelle’s writing style. The historical elements were enlightening, offering insights I might not have encountered otherwise. The author’s note added depth, making the content feel much more authentic.
