Once I began this book, I was hooked and never put it down. I read it in just a few hours. This is a very difficult book to read. It's hard to imagine that something like this really happened. Noelle West Ihli did an excellent job exposing a bit of history that isn't very well known. None Left to Tell is thoughtfully researched, and the characters are wonderful!
Katrina was strong and did everything she could to protect her family. I resonated with her. Lucy - my gosh. Lucy. Her husband changed before her eyes and with good reason. I am so glad Lucy learned the truth and then did what she had to do. She was strong and brave. She was put in a horrible situation but did what was right as a human being. My heart really went out to Sally, but she rose above her situation into a (hopefully) better one. All three of these women were strong women. Great characters.
My heart broke for Nancy and Tri. Oh my goodness, the night terrors, the fears, the repressed memories. I am so glad everything came flooding back. It was devastating to read though.
I read so many books that only truly good books stay with me. This is one of those. This book will stay with me for a long time. I know I will think about it for years to come.

This story is fiction. However tightly based On real life events. That happened in southern Utah.
It was the worst massacre to happen in the USA prior to September 11. The mountain meadows Massacre In 1857.
It's 1857 and a bunch of families are traveling by horse and cart from Arkansas to California. It's estimated to be about a 60 day trip.
The story is told from multiple POV of the Mormons, the Gentiles and native Americans.
I have never been a fan of historical fiction but this story sucked me right in, especially knowing it was based on true events.
There were moments where I couldn't breathe which is normal for Noelle's books for me haha and several moments of this book where I sobbed and gasped.
I highly recommend this book and can confidently say it's taken #1 for my favourite read of 2024.
This is the only book where I've read the whole afterword. I was so interested in the history and stories of what happened. It also list all the victims and their ages. ๐ญ
Finding out the LDS church did not acknowledge or officially apologise until 2007 blows my mind and apparently still to this day try to blame it on native Americans.
This was an advanced reader copy and will release on October 8th 2024. I can't wait to get my physical copy.
When I seen Noelle Ihli was coming out with another book I jumped at the possibility of getting the arc to read. I really enjoyed some of her other books including "Run on Red", "Gray after dark", and "Ask Andrea." She was becoming an auto-read author for me so I was beyond excited when I got approved. However, I was disappointed that when I requested it was being marketed or potrayed as a "thriller" and this is more a historical fiction. It has recently been changed to say a "historical thriller" but I do not understand the thriller aspect of this at all. This was unlike the author's usual writing and it might of very well been a me issue, since I was expecting the "put me on the edge of my seat" thrillers I have been used to with her writing.
None Left to Tell follows the perspectives of three women during the events leading up to, during, and after the Mountain Meadows Massacre in 1857. This is a heartbreaking story based on true events. I appreciate all the research the author went through to give as much historical detail as she could during the story. As a child this was never something we learned about during school or an event I have ever heard of until reading this book, so I applaud the author for bringing insight to such a devastating and tragic event. At times it was very hard to continue reading because of the horrific events that occured. If you enjoy historical fiction and the times of the Western Expansion then this book will be for you.
However, this was not what I was expecting going in and the pacing was slow. I was expecting the fast-paced thrillers that I have grown accustomed to when reading her work. This was very imformative read and I enjoyed learning about an event in history I never knew about.
Knowing that this was a "thriller" book, I hadn't read anything by this author prior to this book and didn't know what to expect. I honestly didn't know what this book was about until I started reading it. All I can say is that this book was AMAZING!!!! I loved every single page! I truly enjoyed this story so much so that I have googled the Mountain Meadow Massacre to see if there are any videos on it to give me more information. I talked about this book to my husband who is very interested in reading it when it comes out! I will most certainly recommend this book to everyone I know!!! Fantastic read!!!! Thanks for sharing this story, Noelle!!
Wow. This book was such a departure from the authorโs previous works that I have loved, and a total surprise to me. I judged the book by its cover and didnโt dive too deep into the synopsis before jumping at the chance to read it! It is a brutally honest take on a horrific historical massacre. Iโm not a huge historical fiction fan, but this was captivating. You could tell the author put so much time and heart into getting this one right! She is so close to the topic at hand and goes more into detail about that in the Authorโs note at the beginning and the afterword, which I highly recommend reading, as well as content warnings! This book tore me completely apart, it was hard to read, I had to take many breaks and read it slowly, little by little. I didnโt feel like it was one to burn through, but to read intentionally and with purpose. These characters truly came to life through the alternating POVs of the women in this story. Overall, I enjoyed the book, even though it was tough to read and get through as I wasnโt sure where the story could be going. The end was redemptive. Iโm not sure I would recommend for thriller readers, itโs geared more towards historical fiction.
Thanks to Netgally and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for honest review!
When I saw a book by Noelle West Ihli on Netgally, I requested it immediately. I didn't even read what the book was about, because I loved Ask For Andrea so much I just knew I'd love anything she wrote. I went into this book thinking it would be a similar psychological thriller with murder and twists and what not. When I read the author's note at the beginning I realized I was in for a pleasant surprise. Although this book does have some suspense (and a lot of murder) it is based on the true story of a massacre committed by the Mormons! I have several family members that are members of the Mormon church and I love to listen to podcasts about all of the fundamentalist Mormon groups (aka cults) so I was extremely excited to dive into this book. It was such an incredible story. I cried for so many of the characters. I kept checking Google to see if what I was reading was true (it was!)
Why have we never heard of this massacre? I hope this book gets turned into a movie or documentary or something because I found this so interesting and heartbreaking and compelling and I think everyone should know of this mind boggling event in our nation's history.
I think everyone should read this book. It's an important story and the victims deserve to be remembered.
ARC Review
None Left to Tell by Noelle Ihli
Three women leading separate lives find their fates intertwined in the most harrowing way. Lucy strives to be a devoted Mormon wife and mother, Katrina is determined to get her family safely to California, and Sally has been given as a โgiftโ to a man she barely knows as his fourth wife. Their paths converge in a tragic story that unearths the grim realities of the Mountain Meadow Massacre.

I donโt often read historical fiction, but as a fan of Noelle Ihliโs thrillers, I was compelled to pick this one upโand Iโm so glad I did. The depth and intensity of this story blew me away. Itโs clear that the author put extensive research, passion, and care into every page.
From the very first paragraph, I was drawn into this heart-wrenching tale. Itโs both gripping and thought-provoking. I found myself learning not only about the historical context but also about the resilience of women facing unimaginable challenges. The author also had great attention to detail, which is highlighted in the โAfterwordโ.
The journeys of Lucy, Katrina, and Sally are beautifully crafted. I admire how the author captured the complexity of their experiences and for honoring the spirit of the women who lived through such tumultuous times.
I highly recommend this book, even if historical fiction isnโt typically your genre. It will definitely stick with me!
This book was so well written! I am not a historical fiction fan, but the characters and details were captivating. Thank you for the ARC!
This was such a heavy, yet beautifully written book. Based on events I had no idea about. I loved how the author wrote from different points of view to tell the story.
This is not my typical genre. It's historical fiction, based the true story of the Mountain Meadows Massacre. I do like Noelle Ihli, but this book was so much heavier than I thought it would be. It was beautiful and heartbreaking and emotional. I didn't expect to be completely engrossed in such a story but I was.
The story follows three women: Lucy, Katrina and Sally, each from different struggles. Lucy's story was heart wrenching and intense. Katrina's story as a mother was captivating. And Sally, sweet lost Sally, trapped in a marriage that was forced upon her, was in some parts tragic and some parts uplifting. It was such a beautiful web Ihli weaves through the tragic story. It's a MUST read. It's multi-layered and suspenseful and so so emotional. Enjoy as you cry yourself through this novel.
4.5 stars.
I decided to go into this "based on true events" blind. I'm satisfied with the decision. After finishing Noelle W. Ihli's story I looked into some of the sources she listed. She did a phenomenal job keeping it as historically accurate as possible while also keep my hooked from page one.
A great example that humankind isn't as simple as good vs evil. The stories from the main characters are full of love, heartbreak, loyalty, betrayal, redemption, and everything in-between.
Thank you for the opportunity to read an arc copy. This is a historical thriller/historical fiction that I would recommend to others.
This is the first book that I have read from Noelle West, and I enjoyed reading it. I needed a thriller read after I have finished Freida's book, and this book was a perfect next read.
It is a bit disturbing and dark, but I enjoyed it and was at the edge of my seat every single time. I think this is gonna be one of my favorite read's this year.
Write more books please.
I finished None Left To Tell by Noelle W. Ihli, Author last night. I was lucky enough to get an ARC (thank you to Noelle W. Ihli and NetGalley!) and read ahead of time. The book is going to be released 10/11/24. Easily โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ stars and Iโd do 10 if there was the option.
My review:
I actually finished this book last night, but I needed a little while to collect myself before I could write a review.
This book is about the Mountain Meadow Massacre in 1857. A story I have never even heard of until this wonderful author, Noelle W. Ihli wrote a very much researched and well thought out book.
I have no words for this awful tragic story. And the title. The title says it all.
The story starts with a wagon train heading to CA from AR. To think of literally walking across the United States on foot first of all is just unbelievable. In the weather and whatever else that can happen. With little kids too. And not just one kid but many families had a lot of kids back then. Yes, the oxen could pull the wagons but many times the extra weight of everyone was too much. And the oxen are really a necessity.
The story switches perspectives from three women; Katrina Huff; one of the women on the wagon train to CA, Kahpeputz (aka Sally) who is a native woman living with a tribe that is not where she was born, and Lucy Robison; a devout Mormon woman.
There are more but I donโt want any spoilers.
As I was reading this, one night I actually dreamed of the story. Thatโs how embedded this was in my head. Itโs awful and very sad and tragic. I am still trying to wrap my head around it.
I would highly recommend and also do not skip the authors note at the end! The amount of time and research she put into this book is insurmountable. There are even excerpts from real sermons woven in.
I kind of knew going into the book that it wouldnโt be my typically genre of something spooky or a mystery to solve or a whodunnit psychological thriller. But, in actuality it was all of these things and more; because it is a true story. Truly blown away at how well this was written. Noelle told this story perfectly with so much respect to the victims and families and native culture.
This was not her usual type of book and was not my usual type of read but this was very well written. Great read.
I had not heard of Noelle West Ihli before, and after this book I have been trying to find others of hers to be added to my want to read list.
I do love the thriller genre and historical fiction- however this was about a historical event I had not heard of before reading the book - and I was throughly gripped with how it was discussed.
The characters and the way plot was twined together was really intriguing. The only criticism I could think of is potentially the first 50 pages or slow were a bit slow, but after that I was throughly hooked.
Families are crossing the US in hopes of settling in California in the land of gold. When they hit Utah things take a terrible turn. This is the story of the Meadow. Massacre. It is based on a true story and is absolutely devastating.
I have read several books by this author and they have all been thrillers. I never really read what a book is about before starting it and to say this one took me by surprise would be an understatement. Itโs definitely historical fiction and I enjoyed it, but not what I thought I would be reading! The story is beyond sad and itโs a sad time in our history that I had absolutely no clue about and would venture to say most people donโt. Trigger warnings are at the beginning and take them seriously!
This book is a perfect depiction why Noelle West Ihli is one of my favourite authors. I wasnโt sure how I felt about a historical thriller but Iโd be willing to read this womanโs shopping list, so Iโm willing to try anything she puts on paper. The mountain meadows massacre was harrowing to read about through the eyes of the main women; but continuously endearing to see such a tragic event from every angle. Itโs easy for the line of good and evil to be wavered when looking at either side of from the perspective of the women, who unluckily are pawns to the men around them and all victimised in their own ways. I have gone on to read more about the real event as I had never heard of it before and this book gives a great stepping stone to want to learn more about a tragedy everyone should know about.
I was lucky enough to get early access to this book and words cannot explain how moved I am. Based on a true story, you can tell the author put an intense about of research and emotion into this book. I loved the different perspectives of women during this time period and tragedy. Truly a piece of history that isnโt discussed enough. Noelle W. Ihli will continue to be one of my favorite authors and I will be sure to pick up every book she writes. Definitely worth the read when it releases next month!
First, I went into this book blind, as I do with most everything i read, and I quickly discovered this is a historical fiction with thriller aspects.
I will say, the first 100 pages or so were slow and, at times, boring for me, I was not that into it. After pushing past that, I found this to be an un-put-downable read.
I had moments reading this book where my heart was racing and moments where I was tearing up. This was a beautiful and, at the same time heartbreaking story.
If you are on the fence of weather or not to pick up this book based off the historical fiction aspect, I'd recommend you do.
Everybody needs to read this book. Thank you Net Galley for the advanced reading kindle version of this book. Before reading this I have read several other books by this author and loved them all. This was such a different story for her told about an awful moment in history that I had never heard of before. The Mountain Meadows Massacre was told in an amazing way based on the lives of actual people who experienced this. You grew to know the characters and to feel their experiences. The story telling was profound and the summary at the end was an amazing contribution as well. This book was heavily researched and told with a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. I will be thinking about this one for a long time.
