Thank you NetGally and Noelle for the opportunity to read this book in advance!
Wow what an amazingly beautiful heartbreaking book. I had no idea these events even happened and I’ve done so much research since. It reminds me of The Four Winds with a mix of the Nightingale by Kristin Hannah.
This is a powerful historical fiction about a little-known (at least to me) mass-murder in Utah. Mountain Meadows Massacre of 1857 was a series of attacks during the Utah War resulting in the mass murder of at least 120 members of the Baker–Fancher emigrant wagon train.
While this is a historical fiction, there are still very difficult topics that are discussed. Religion, racism, death of animals and children...it's all difficult to read about. That said, it's important that it was included because sometimes, the truth is difficult.
Noelle West Ihli is a very talented writer who is able to take this story and make it into a readable format, providing various POVs, and reaching into the heart of the horror.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this books.
I have never read a Noelle W. Ihli book that I didn't love. I have consumed all of them in a record pace. This one was no different.
I have truly NEVER heard of this horrific event in history. The story was based on the Mountain Meadows Massacre, which was centered around the LDS church slaughtering a group of emigrants who were trying to get to California. The story is told through the viewpoint of 3 women- a woman in the caravan trying to get to California, a member of the LDS church, and a Native American woman. The stories are intertwined and beautifully told.
I love this book. I hope everyone reads it and then does their research on this event, like I did. The author's note at the end describes her ties with the LDS church, which is also an important read to me.
I went into this book blind, not knowing what it was about. While it's not her traditional writing genre, this book is written beautifully and the story is told with true emotion. Another great work by a great author!
I enjoyed the book. It didn’t take me long to get through and I enjoyed the storyline. I always love Noelle Ihli’s books. I would recommend this book.
Although thos book is extremely well written and you can tell a lot of research went into it, historical fiction is not one of my genere picks, although this book has thrilling aspects. If historical fiction is your genre choice I think you'll really love this book!
Poignant and heartbreaking this novel is based on events in history that have seem to be hidden by the LDS church. Classified as a thriller but is more identified as a historical fiction.
About fourteen families made the long journey from Arkansas to California except there journey ended in Utah with only seventeen children surviving. This long wagon trail was heading west under the direction of Captain Alexander Fancher. The passage had them crossing through Mormon Territory in Utah. In the meadows the wagons were ambushed. It became a bloodbath of horrific acts of violence. For years the blame laid upon the Native Indians. In 1857 this spot is marked and known as the Mountain Meadows Murder and Noelle Ihli is here to set the record straight about what took place on that dreadful day in a historical fiction based on real life events. Her newest release titled None Left to Tell is about the lives of three women who at one point become entangled in the event that took place.
…
The journey out west is a dangerous one that has been going on for years. It’s difficult on the animals and the people. Food and water is scarce along the trail and traveling with little space in the wagons compounds the danger. Worse that that is traveling through areas that are inhibited by religious groups and Native communities. Years prior Mormon’s were forced out of Illinois, New York, and Missouri. Having gentiles crossing onto their land caused quite the stir.
…
At first I admit I had trouble separating all three women in my mind. There individual stories tended to blend together in my mind. I’m not very good at visualizing a character driven story. It took a few chapters to compartmentalize my mind. Once I did I grasped the basics.
…
Noelle Ihli describes in great detail a raid of war on the gentiles traveling on Mormon land and how it began. The truth of this raid was forever lost and hidden until Noelle researched and wrote this book to bring awareness about that day in 1857.
…
Noelle put a great amount of effort to bring this topic to life. History was never my favorite subject in school. I admit this is the type of history that needs to be taught. The way these families were treated was beyond wrong and it breaks my heart that all they wanted was a fresh start in a new location like many others before them. The writing as always is superior.
…
There’s a lot to unpack in this story. My mind won’t quiet itself. Now that Noelle Ihli informed me I can’t stop my thoughts. My head is a raceway for thoughts. Especially since she visited the site. The pictures made it all more real. Knowing age was a factor brought tears to my eyes and the significance of the ring. So disrespectful. The lies. I can’t stop thinking how I just visited Cedar City last year. Brings new light to that area.
Oh.My.Lord. this was so, so, so good! I honestly think it's Ihli's best work yet! And this cover...I was honestly hooked from the cover. The suspense and thrill were top notch. Once I started, I couldn't stop. This is one of those sit up late into the night reads!
None left to tell by Noelle W. Ihli
Well I went into this one completely blind and was in for a surprise. A historical surprise. Very different than most of Ihli’s past books but a good read nonetheless. This is the story of the Mountain meadow massacre set back in the time of wagon trains to California, Indians and Mormons and anti Mormons. It follows 3 different women all on different ends and each their own story during these hard times. At moments it was very hard to read, especially what happened in that mountain meadow to not just innocent men but women and children too. This story will sadden and sicken you but it is part of our history and I’m glad Ihli brought it to light.
This is the story of three women who are each connected in some way by the very real Mountain Meadows Massacre. Katrina Huff is a devoted mother and wife who is traveling West with her family. Their party faces extreme difficulties along the way but none of those things compare to the horrors facing them when they reach the meadow. Lucy Robinson left her life behind when an anti-Mormon mob came after her and her family. She now has a simpler life, or so she thought. When tragedy strikes her family, Lucy battles with the truth about who might be to blame. Sally (Kahpeputz) has been “gifted” as the fourth wife to Chief Kanosh. As an outcast in her new home, Sally tries her best to make a bearable life for herself and eventually finds comfort in a new friend. When Chief Kanosh joins a revenge plot on those traveling West, Sally must decide where her loyalties lie.
This story is very special and touching while also being very sad. I am shocked and troubled that I hadn’t heard of the Mountain Meadows Massacre before now. What a tragic part of our country’s history that is not recognized in the way that it should be to honor those who lost their lives as well as their surviving family members. I found each of the characters very compelling and loved learning about each of them through their points of view. I just adore Noelle Ihli and her writing. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next :)
Thank you to Dynamite Books and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Not my typical read. But so glad I took a chance on it!
I loved this book. I couldn’t put it down. The story was told incredibly well. Add this to your TBR, and put it at the top for next read!
Thanks to Netgalley for this arc. I love this authors works and I was surprised that she wrote something that’s not thriller so that intrigued me. I haven’t heard of this tragedy in real life and it really kind of reminds me of back in the 1800’s when all of the Indians were forced to leave out of their homes and to walk what is called the trail of tears and relocate but a lot of loss happened and they couldn’t take anything but the clothes and it was tragic.. this made me emotional right from the storyline of Katrina. This was such a heartfelt story and it’s hard to read. It was beautifully written and I cannot recommend this enough even though historical fiction isn’t my taste but I loved this. Please be aware going in, it has very heavy religious topics so if you don’t like that then this isn’t for you.

5 stars! An Excellently Written Historical Fiction Masterpiece
I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first—historical fiction has never been my go-to genre. But Noelle's skillful blend of historical facts with engaging storytelling pulled me in right from the start, and I found myself immersed in a whirlwind of emotions.
This is my third Noelle book, and yet again, she did not disappoint. I finished it in just two days and savored every page. Noelle's writing is incredibly evocative, bringing her characters and settings to life in a way that makes it impossible not to become fully invested in the narrative.
What stands out most is her ability to provoke such powerful emotions through her words. Her characters feel deeply human, and their struggles and triumphs linger long after the book ends. I would highly recommend this book, not just to fans of thrillers or historical fiction, but to anyone who loves getting lost in a story.
Thank you to NetGalley, Noelle West Ihli and Dynamite Books for allowing me the pleasure of reading this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
A gripping, heart wrenching tale that will shatter your soul and leave you feeling emotionally drained and empty inside! If I could rate this more stars, I would. I didn't expect this from a Noelle Ihli book. I'm used to her scaring the crap out of me with her thrillers, not having me beside myself with tears and heartache. This book deserves to be read by all. Whether it's simply for entertainment purposes or for factual knowledge of a true crime, the innocent lives lost in this massacre are worthy of remembrance. I had never heard of this before. I can certainly see why it would want to be covered up. Who wants to be held accountable for senseless brutality?! It angers me that justice was never served on those responsible. My heart is still torn apart. Words cannot express how much I loved this book and how it made me feel! It was truly an honor to read this story, and I won't be forgetting about it anytime soon...if ever! Every single page needs to be read from beginning to end. Take my advice and don't skip anything. The afterword gave me chills when the author explained certain instances that happened while she was writing this book. I highly recommend it!

Noelle W. Ihli always delivers some of the quickest best books around (although Freida McFadden are better) and "None Left to Tell" hit the mark!
As someone who loves history and historical fiction this book is everything right in the genre. I learned so much and was captivated from start to finish. Noelle West Ihli does an excellent job of engrossing her audience from the very start. The book is fast paced and heart wrenching at times, a truly powerful read.and a fantastic story.
One of the best thrillers I’ve read this year. Edge of your seat thriller that keeps you in a chokehold all the way through.
This is an incredible read. Noelle is a gifted storyteller, that much is certain, and I am so thankful to have read None Left to Tell.
Typically I wouldn’t reach for something historical, but I’m so glad I did because I learned so much and was taught in such a beautiful way. This story is devastating and heartbreaking, but told with such care and compassion for people on both sides. I didn’t know much about this massacre, and certainly wasn’t aware of the horrific details surrounding why it happened. The unique way Noelle approached writing this was fantastic, not like any other kind of true crime I’ve experienced. Taking the facts and making it fiction while keeping all the importance and truth in the story is a wonderful skill, and I hope to see more like this from Noelle. I love multiple POVs in books, and I felt emotionally attached to each and every one in this heart wrenching tale. Particularly with Lucy and the inner turmoil she faces, being a believer in the LDS Church but being burdened with such devastating information - the emotions she felt while making such major decisions were so real.
I’ll certainly be picking up more from this author, and am so very glad I was able to read this ARC. Thank you, Noelle.
Noelle W. Ihli is an auto-buy author for me, so when I saw None Left to Tell appear on NetGalley, I immediately hit request! While I always look forward to her releases, her posts describing the intensity of the subject matter and her personal connection ramped up my interest.
The official synopsis of this book says, "Three women, connected by one of the most brutal mass slayings in US history." Through multiple points of view, readers are transported back to 1857 Utah territory (think Oregon Trail times) and the Meadow Mountain Massacre.
This may be a good fit if you enjoy:
- historical fiction + thrillers
- true crime
- strong female characters
It's hard to say I enjoyed this book, but I flew through it. Ihli has a writing style that makes it hard to put her books down. While this book is different than her others taking place in the 1800s, her pacing is consistent. Her token strong female perspectives tugged at my heartstrings. The tense moments had my heart rate spiked. The behaviors of the fragile men pissed me off.
I have a pretty high tolerance for violence in books, and this book was hard to read at times. I appreciate how Ihli *goes there* in her depiction of the massacre. It was a vile scene. It amazes me how the most brutal violence isn't fictional. This time in history doesn't seem to be talked about, and there are still conflicting opinions about how the Mountain Meadows Massacre went down. Her notes before and after the book show how much time, research, and care she put into this novel. While it is quite gruesome at times, I think this book is great for those who enjoy learning through fiction.
*Please note while there are some reveals throughout the book, this is not a mind-bending thriller. Do not be that person who complains there wasn't a shocking twist.*
Rating: I really liked it! (4)
