Cult of the Lamb is a story about a Lamb that starts a cult to destroy the four heretics of the lands. The lamb has been bought back to life by an old god whose asked the lamb to start the cult to appease him. The story is fantastic, the humour is dark but it's very funny. I happened to play the game so if you've played the game you will love this. However, even if you haven't played the game you don't need to know anything to read this and it is an enjoyable comic.
This was cute. I really enjoyed the artwork and it was a pretty simple story to follow. I was surprised by how much the story actually drew me in and how emotional I felt over what happened with Nana. I would definitely continue in this series.
I am fully obsessed with the art style of Cult of the Lamb!
I’ve been interested in the Cult of the Lamb game for months now, but I haven’t actually taken the steps to start it. When I saw this graphic novel available for request, I thought it would be a perfect way to test out the material and maybe motivate myself to commit to buying the game. Honestly, I think it worked! Dark, creepy, and cute (art-wise, at least), Cult of the Lamb was exactly what I was hoping it would be. If you are at all interested in the game, or you’ve already played the game and just want some of the lore, I absolutely believe you should pick this one up!
Thank you to NetGalley, Oni Press, and Alex Paknadel for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
A harrowing story of eldritch machinations, betrayal, and corruption has never been rendered in such a cute and cuddly manner. Cult of the Lamb Volume 1 takes the visual excellence of the hit video game's art and marketing material and brings it to startling life in comic form, an achievement only matched by the fact that the comic's narrative both faithfully covers the events of the source material and also expands it in ways that felt completely natural. The art and colors pop off the page, the characters have real arcs and development, and the stakes feel real. I've never been more surprised and delighted to see such a successful translation from one medium to another.
I've seen a lot of fellow streamers play this game, so when I saw this book, I was interested in reading it. Like omg, I feel so bad for this lamb-like he just wanted to live, he made his first friend, and just wants to live life to its fullest after he was killed for just being a none-beaver. So many sad things happen in this story that you just wanna wrap this lamb into a big hug.
I enjoyed the art. The story is interesting and a bit crazy. But there was an unnecessary verbal tic from the author that continuously pulled me out of the story.
I really really really enjoy this game so when I saw this I was so glad to read it. And it didn't disappoint. I recommend it! I received a free eARC of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this opportunity.
I have played "Cult of the Lamb" and loved it, so when I heard there was a graphic novel, I had to read it! This was such a cute read, and I loved the art style. I'm excited to see what Lamb and his cult members do next!
I’m going to be totally honest; I have not played the Cult of the Lamb game. I’ve seen trailers and streams, but somehow, I haven’t made it to my computer to actually play the game. My husband has played, so I know we own it. I have no excuse not to play, because this comic was delightful.
This reminded me a little bit of Happy Tree Friends, but with more dialogue and an actual cohesive plot. If you don’t know what Happy Tree Friends is, have fun on that YouTube black hole. I loved the buildup of these Gods trying to avoid a prophecy, only to end up pretty much fulfilling it. Hubris is a b*tch. Then we have this little lamb who is tasked with creating a cult and the bigger the cult the more powerful he is. Basically, you have a lamb he creates a cult out of other tree creatures while also fighting monsters and taking down these oppressive Gods.
The only thing I would have liked is a little more world building. I get a pretty good sense of the Lamb’s mission, but I don’t fully understand the dynamics of the world. A map also would have been helpful. I had a hard time determining if it was all one realm or if some dimension hopping was going on. These are good plot points to explore in future books and it’s also possible some if not all of this lore I’m looking for is in the game.
You don’t have to play the game to understand the book. At the heart it’s the tale of the oppressed fighting their oppressors through a cute lamb. What could go wrong?
Thanks to NetGalley and Oni Press for the advanced copy, all opinions are my own.
I have not played the game, but I’ve seen reels and clips about this series and that’s what set me into this. Very dark, very spooky. Perfect for this time of year.
This book had great art and an okay story-line. I am sure that those who are already familiar with the video game (which I am not) will be thrilled with the book. I, on the other hand, thought it was just a bit of an odd little story.
cult of the lamb is originally a video game where you play as the last sacrificial lamb killed in the name of the bishops of the old faith. upon your death, you are brought before an even more ancient deity called the one who waits. he grants you resurrection so that you may return to the world of the living, start a cult in his name, and free the world from the hypocrisy of the current bishops. it is one of my favourite games, so i was really excited to see that it will soon have a companion graphic novel!
it's honestly the perfect medium to expand on the story because one of my favourite parts of the game is the gorgeous art style which is so well captured in the graphic novel. for fans of the game, this demands to be added to your collection as it compiles and expands upon the lore delivered in the game through cut scenes and character intros. i loved that we got to hear more from characters like nana and ratau and also from lamb themself! it was really interesting to see them get a character and personality beyond just being the avatar for the player and it has given me a fresh perspective on the game. the first volume covers the backstory and defeat of leshy--the first bishop of the old faith--and i'm really excited to see future installments carry on with the storyline and delve into more aspects of the game.
and if this is the first time you've heard of this story, i highly recommend giving this book a read and checking out the game! thank you so much to netgalley and oni press for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review. all opinions are my own.
This series is a must for the gamers who loved playing Cult of the Lamb.
My son is dying to read it and I won't let him until he get's the hardcover for XMAS.
I will admit that I've not played the game and that I had zero idea of the story prioir to reading it.
It was a interesting mix of otherwordly horrors and nefarious cultish behaviors.
The story is very simple and mostly there to get you to the next violent scene, and that is fine.
The art is intense and full of blacks and reds, as it should be.
I really enjoyed the excessive cartoony violence and it felt like the right tone for this universe.
Not my favorite game adaptation, but definetly a near perfect execution of what the players of this game will expect.
Gory, funny, dark, what more can you ask for?! The artwork is wonderful! I loved the storyline and characters, brings my back to my days of playing the game. Thank you Netgalley for the ARC! It was awesome!
as a fan of the video game, i was surprised and excited to learn that there'd be a comic adaptation - unfortunately, i'm a little let down.
the art style is definitely the strongest aspect of this book; no surprise to anyone who's played the game. at its best points, the colours are deliciously rich, with a perfect blend of cuteness and gore-filled slashing.
however, it's not perfect - which leads to my main criticism: it all feels a little...messy. sometimes a page is so packed with art and text it's muddy and hard to decipher what's going on. additionally, while the plot overall i thought was an interesting take - blending the game's on-screen story with the writer's own take on the cult narrative really well, honestly - the dialogue was a little cheesy at best, and "takes a couple of reads to understand what the page is trying to communicate due to the aforementioned on-page mess" at worst.
i'm not sure if i'll continue reading, personally, i think it's an enjoyable read if you've played the games, though it falls short of the deadly magic of the game itself. and hey, if you read this comic without playing the game? go play it! it's super good!
For those of you not familiar with the game, the last Lamb is sacrificed but resurrected from death by a god named "The One Who Waits." In exchange, they must create a loyal cult in its name. As the player, you must rescue customizable followers, gather resources, fulfill requests, defeat old gods and progress through randomly generated levels in the Darkwood.
In "Cult of the Lamb: The First Verse" the reader is introduced to the old gods, Leshy, Heket, Kallamar and Shamura from the beginning as they track the Lamb's movements. They certainly do not want "The One Who Waits" to emerge and usurp them. In-game, as a projection of the player, the Lamb does not speak. In the comic, the Lamb expresses hesitation in starting a cult. They are much more interested in exacting revenge and defending the innocent. Ironically a simple gift, an offering of thanks, triggers the first "taste of worship." Eventually the Lamb becomes over-confident, corrupt in their own way, desperately trying to carve a new path.
I liked the scheming, devoted personality of Ratau in contrast to the original character Nana's concern and practicality. Ratau actually oversees the village in the absence of the Lamb, which helps move the plot along and allows for follower dialogue and glimpses into village life. In game, you simply assign tasks to your followers to keep them busy while you fight in the woods. Both Ratau and Nana are willing to sacrifice themselves to grant the Lamb the necessary strength to defeat their enemies. The difference is, one wants to do it for praise and recognition, the other only out of love. I highly recommend pulling the soundtrack up on Spotify or YouTube and playing it while you read. I'm in love with the art, and it is true to the animation of the game! I eagerly await Volume 2!
As a player of the Cult of Lamb game, I found this comic to be delightful. It matched the feel perfectly, the mix of adorable critters and eldritch horrors was well-executed and the story was a joy to digest. If you've played the games as well, this will feel familiar, but give more depth to the story. I found it to be worth the read! If you didn't play the game, this will have a few more surprises for you, so enjoy!
The length is fair, you can finish it in one sitting, but it's long enough to feel like an event. The illustrations were beautiful and detailed. This may be obvious, but the book can be a bit gruesome. It wasn't a problem for me, but just something for sensitive readers to be aware of.
As a gamer I absolutely adore Cult of the Lamb so obviously I was so excited for this graphic novel especially since it was in partnership with Devolver Digital.
This volume contains the first 4 issues of the Cult of the Lamb comic series.
The graphics hold true to the game itself and the storyline is absolutely hilarious and dark.
I love playing the game, so I was excited to see a graphic novel being published! I really enjoyed the cuteness crossed with gore. It was such a quick and easy read. Looking forward to the next one!
Loved reading the back story to a game I enjoy playing! The art was sooooo beautiful and the story was endearing and fun! Cant wait for volume 2!
