I just finished Lark Ascending by Meagan Spooner, and wow, what a ride! If you’re into dystopian fantasy with a strong female lead and a hint of romance, this one’s for you. The story follows Lark, who has this cool (but dangerous) ability to manipulate energy in a world where magic is strictly controlled. The pacing is quick and keeps you turning the pages, especially once Lark breaks free and starts her journey toward survival and self-discovery.
What I loved most was Lark’s character growth. At the beginning, she’s scared and unsure, but as the story progresses, she really comes into her own and learns to embrace her power. Oren, the mysterious guy she meets along the way, adds a great dynamic, and I found their relationship refreshing—more subtle and not your typical insta-love.
The world-building can feel a bit overwhelming at first, but Spooner’s writing is so immersive that it doesn’t take long to get hooked. There’s action, tension, and some deeper themes about freedom and control that give you something to think about. Overall, if you’re a fan of fast-paced fantasy with a strong emotional core, you’ll definitely enjoy Lark Ascending!
I've finally read this book! I've been meaning to read it for almost a decade, but at that point, I had to reread the first two books, which I've now done, and I could finally read it! And it was worth the wait, it was a really wonderful book!
Lark has been through a lot throughout this series. That she has to go back to the city of her birth, yeah, that's a tough undertaking for her. But she's stronger after all that she's been through, and there are wrongs that need to be corrected.
In this book, we get so many answers, and I couldn't get enough! So much of this world was left to mystery up to this point, and finding out these truths was so fantastic to read! With some characters badly, and the rebellion, there was always plenty going on!
Oh, but that ending? That was true to this series, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't hurt! It was pretty frustrating, some of the things that she went through, but that ending was the cake topper, the way that she gets treated after all that she's done. Bah!
I had such a great time reading this book and I can't wait to read more by Meagan Spooner!
