Outshine, by Nola Decker, is a fast paced genre bending novel - combining science fiction, fantasy and thriller all into one good debut! We join Gabe, who is a "spotter" - meaning he can tell when anyone is lying, and if you do dare lie around him, he then finds out the truth and more. We also have Watts, Gabe's older and awful brother who along with Jessa have super-human strength. Watts is kidnapped, Jessa is almost kidnapped and soon, Gabe and Jessa are teamed up to save Watts. What follows is a whole lot of trouble, action and adventure.
Now - why only three stars? The novel was repetitive and very standard characterization. Also, it promised a sequel which never came through unfortunately. Things got kind of messy in the last quarter of the book, and not in the good way. Needed some more cleaning up but overall, a good debut!
