Unwept by Tracy and Laura Hickman is book 1 in The Nightbirds series. It is a young adult paranormal fantasy novel that tells the story of Ellis, a teen who has lost her memory in mysterious circumstances. Despite being short Unwept packs a punch. It is a slow paced mystery thriller that keeps the reader guessing. Tracy and Laura Hickman unveil parts of the mystery with strategic accuracy to keep the reader turning the pages. The Hickmans write with good flare easily building up the rough and ragged coast of Maine in the readers mind. The nightmares Ellis suffers are creepy and give a real sense of the dark layers of her turmoil. Where Unwept struggles is in its characters. Ellis is not interesting enough to lead the reader to really care about her plight. She isn't all that likeable. The secondary characters felt a bit flat and unengaging. Despite some issues there I enough here to from a largely enjoyable read that I think fans of the genre will enjoy.
