Cute book about Juneteenth and Bo’s baking disaster. My grandson loved seeing a little boy cooking. We were able to talk about the holiday in an age appropriate way for his age with the help of this book.
I hope to see other books featuring Bo and highly recommend this book. We will definitely be adding this book to our home library.
I received an electronic ARC from Lerner Publishing Group through NetGalley.
A new beginning chapter series for lower to mid-elementary level readers. Bo and his grandfather have a close relationship and much of the story takes place in the grandfather's barber shop or their home above it. They are looking toward the Juneteenth celebration but his grandfather does not have time to make his red desert this year. Bo offers to make it. Sadly, a disaster happens when Bo stops paying attention. His grandfather introduces him to a local chef and the chef saves the day by teaching Bo to make a different red desert.
Written at a level readers will understand and connect with. Looking forward to sharing this series with our students.
I honestly wanted to read this after I read the summary because I thought I would be the person to ruin a dessert, and I wanted to see how Bo solved the problem. This is a great lesson on being patient and forgiving and working with family to find solutions. It's also fun because Bo is excited about celebrating Juneteenth and it made me want to read more books about him.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
Cute illustrations accompany this story about a boy who learns about Juneteenth and the significance of the color red to the holiday. Buzz also gains confidence as a budding chef!
I read this with my 10 year old daughter. She loved it, when she saw there were more books in the series at the end of the book she was excited and wants to read more about Bo. She is very interested in history and I like how there is history and meaning to the story. The illustrations are done really well.
What a fantastic story! Bo and the Baking Disaster is centered on community, finding solutions to small mistakes, and the celebration of Juneteenth. Bo’s enthusiasm for baking with his Pop-Pop takes a turn when things don't go as planned, but his determination to make things right is inspiring. The beautiful illustrations bring Bo’s world to life with vibrant, colorful details that perfectly complement the heartwarming story. Also, I especially love the explanation of the importance of the color red in Juneteenth celebrations. This book is a perfect introduction to Juneteenth and its significance, while also reminding young readers that mistakes can lead to new and creative ideas. A fantastic read for families and classrooms alike!
This ebook was made available for me to read and review by Elliott Smith, Lerner Publishing Group, and NetGalley.
The illustrator of this picture ebook is Subi Bosa. Subi does a fantastic job. The illustrations of the characters are warmly colored and beautifully rendered. With pops of brightly colored objects that help to enhance the text. Like the brightly striped Barbers Pole in the corner of the barber shop.
This book is part of a series featuring Bo and his grandfather, Roger, better known as Pop-Pop, and largely set in the Grandfather's Barber Shop.
This book in the series focuses on the celebration of Juneteenth with a community picnic. This features important information about this newest of American holidays as well as relevant cultural information. I look forward to reading this with my grandkids. Juneteenth is a favorite holiday of theirs.
I love the setup for this series and look forward to reading about more of Bo's adventures in the future.
