Three siblings, hatred, secrets, child abuse and money make for an interesting and intriguing read. After their father dies, the three siblings are summoned to the reading of his will. Each has a back story, and clearly their father had been quite cruel. While not necessarily likeable, as the story unfolds , the secrets come out. This is a real page turner. I especially enjoyed the way how the three teenagers impacted the story. It is also about healing and moving forward once all the truths came out. This is the first novel I have read by this author and I look forward to reading her next book. Thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book.
There is a huge number of secrets in this book. Every character seems to have some, and almost everything everyone believes about events past is wrong.
At the centre of the story are three siblings, forced together following their father’s death, as they try to fulfil his final wishes in order to inherit his large fortune. Each of these siblings has secrets, including what happened to their fourth sibling. Each of them is also incredibly manipulative, which sadly, doesn’t make them particularly likeable. However, there is plenty going on, and twists to the story are gradually revealed, which makes it an entertaining read.
The Secret Inheritance is a book that will keep the reader turning the pages, trying to guess the truth of the intertwined history of all the characters.
Notice of the death of multi millionaire Jude Fitzherbert has been been coming for some time. Despite the severity of his illness, Jude’s adult children have not been to visit. Nursed in his final hours by his Housekeeper and sometime lover Clara, Jude’s is a lonely death, due to the estrangement of all members of his family, both from him and each other. Perhaps the reading of Jude’s Last Will and Testament will make a difference. Or maybe not.
This book was quite intense and lengthy, none of the main characters were likeable in any way, each having their own, sometimes confusing, agenda. Not quite sure that some of the characters were entirely necessary (Nanny and Tube traveler) as they only added to a somewhat muddy plot line.
Not a bad book and I know that followers of this author will love it, but for me it lacked suspense and what could have been exceptional turned into another family saga/drama with the usual type of secrets.
2.5*
Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing.
I'm a big fan of Rachel's Kelly Porter series but this is something very different. Throw together three siblings, a lot of hate, cruelty, secrets, misunderstandings, money and murder. With a will which says they have to live together harmoniously for 7 days if anyone is to inherit their father's fortune. There you have the basis for a fantastic book which had me glued to the page all over the weekend. The plot twists and turns like a Swiss mountain pass with everyone accusing everyone else and the reader is kept guessing until the very end. A brilliant read I thoroughly enjoyed and am happy to recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy. All opinions are my own
This is a great book! The secrets and the twists of the family are crazy! Some are very predictable so that was upsetting to know what was coming. I think it should have been kept a secret a little better and I would have enjoyed it more.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers, and especially the author for this ARC in exchange for my honest review of the book!!
“The Secret Inheritance” by Rachel Lynch is an atmospheric standalone family drama that mixes mystery, suspense, and emotion. I love the DI Kelly Porter series by this author so had no hesitation picking this one up to read.
Rosie Fitzherbert has been estranged from her family since the tragic death of her brother Christian. After years of silence and self-imposed exile, Rosie returns to Warbury House following the death of her father. Once there she will need to face her past and the difficult relationships with her siblings, Hettie and James.
Warbury House is an excellent setting adding atmosphere to the story that is full of intrigue. The relationships between the siblings is very tense which is made worse by the will which stipulates they must stay at the house for seven days to secure their inheritance. What follows is an emotional battle with Rosie dealing with her past and unresolved grief. What is the truth regarding Christian’s death and how will it affect what remains of the siblings delicate relationships.
The story is well written and perfectly paced, full of interesting characters with plenty of intrigue.
With the inheritance at stake Rosie will have to face her past and the reasons that drove her away from Warbury House. The tension builds as the family secrets are revealed making this a very enjoyable read.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Storm Publishing for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
This book started a little slowly for me, but once it got going things started to speed up. A good deal of it focused on what had happened to the siblings growing up. Time jumps are not one of my favourite things, but they helped explain why they didn't get on with each other. There was also the mystery of who was responsible for their brother's death. The ending was a little sad when another person died too. A good book
“Your Father has died.” These four word bring Hettie, James and Rosie home to Warburg Manor for the reading of the will. The three siblings share nothing with each any longer but toxic relationships. Buried secrets and lies were what their lives were built on till one fateful week when it all came crashing down. This plot was interesting with each chapter devoted to each character. I found it hard to like James who was shallow and vindictive. Rosie shut herself off from everyone and refused to speak. Hettie had at least a loving maternal instinct within her. Perhaps their lives might have been different with some redeeming characteristics if tragedy, greed and revenge hadn’t overshadowed them. Thank you Netgalley and Storm Publishers for the early copy. This review is my honest opinion.
The Secret Inheritance by Rachel Lynch
When her father dies, Rosie returns to Warbury House after decades away. To secure her share of the fortune, she must endure seven days with her estranged siblings, Hettie and James. But the sprawling estate holds more than money – it guards the truth about her brother’s tragic death.
Sorry to say , for me , this title didn't quite hit the spot where her previous ones have .
I didn't take to the characters , but then again , I don't think you are suppose to as they have been changed by their previous experiences of growing up in the family .
The Secret Inheritance is a well developed and well written book. As a reader, you will quickly be absorbed into the lives of the characters. Jude Fitzherbert has passed away from cancer, however he has set up his remaining three children (Christian died very young) to spend a week together at the estate, along with their families, in order to claim their inheritance. The siblings (Hettie, James and Rosie) have been estranged from their father and each other for decades. Rosie was so traumatized she stopped talking after she left their home. Clara (also Jude’s long time lover) and Michael must stay as well; they are employees who helped bring up the children. It’s a very troubled family, full of secrets, lies, betrayals and hostility. The author has organized each chapter about one character at a time, which enables you to fully understand their past bit by bit. The story is engaging and disturbing with stunning revelations. This is a terrific book and I highly recommend it. With thanks to Netgalley and Storm Publishing for this ARC. My opinions are my own.
Okay this book needs to be made into a movie....like now! I couldn't stop talking about it to friends. Recommended it for the book club. Highly recommend! It was so good.
The Fitzherber’s are a very troubled family. Everything is not as it seems. It’s twist story that kept me turning the pages. When the truth comes out there is nothing but devastation left in the wake. It’s a dark look at jealousy, betrayal and greed. The writing is incredible. The storyline left me with a lot to contemplate. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
The Secret Inheritance by Rachel Lynch is a standalone novel. It is published on 25 October. Thank you to Storm Publishing, Netgalley and the author for the advance copy to review. Jude Fitzherbert loses his battle with cancer. He has been Clara’s employer for the last forty years, and she is also his lover. His 3 children, Hettie, James and Rosie, have not visited him for years. Now that he is dead, they will come home – for the money. However, there are conditions attached to the will, and who will get the money. The family could tear itself apart, further than it already has. And then there is their brother Christian, who died young. I found that having a chapter dealing with each character worked really well, as they don’t seem to be like a family, more like individuals. It was fascinating reading about them and their frostiness towards, and secrets from, each other and their father. They are now adults with their own lives, and they are all conspiring, either individually or with each other. The desolation and the unhappiness of the house and the venom within was so vivid in my mind as I read.
After the death of their Father Jude, 3 siblings, James, Hettie and Rosie go back to the family home for the will reading. But Jude had a final trick for them as they have to stay in the house for a week to be able to claim the inheritance.
But the 3 adults are all fairly manipulative and soon long dragged out secrets of their childhood are brought to the surface with tragic results.
I'm really not sure what I made of the book, the writing is pretty intense and this meant I didn't particularly like the characters, none of them seemed to have any redeeming features but this became apparent towards the end it's because of their Fathers actions.
I found it an easy read
If the burning question is simply whether Rosie will get her voice back, this would be a quick simple
story in paperback. This is far more than the sad tragedy of one person. This is evil, greed, self aggrandizement
and revenge that had festered for generations and would be exposed in a pretty interesting manner..
The book is well written, and well organized by time and character. It’s important to pay attention to the
nuances clearly managed by the Author as she winds you up and back to bring maximum emotion to
her story.
I seldom (read: NEVER) force myself to read straight through but this book was so compelling that I read
it in two sittings, and pondered my thoughts for a few hours… Was I hoping to find a different way to see
the actions of one of the siblings? Was I hoping to learn that there was just no nefarious evil, that I was
certain I was reading….
This is an absolutely complete story, with no spoilers coming from me.
My thanks to Storm Publishing via NetGalley, for the download of this book for review purposes.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy of this book.
The day her brother Christian died, Rosie Fitzherbert left her family home and never came back. Until now.
When her father dies, Rosie returns to Warbury House after decades away. To secure her share of the fortune, she must endure seven days with her estranged siblings, Hettie and James. But the sprawling estate holds more than money – it guards the truth about her brother’s tragic death.
As old wounds reopen, Rosie realises silence won't protect her anymore. With millions at stake and family secrets threatening to surface, can Rosie confront her past before it consumes her future? Rosie hasn't spoken in years. Will returning to Warbury House finally give her a voice?
I have to be completely honest and say that several things about this book did not sit well with me. Firstly, the book started with the death of the family patriarch from cancer. Having gone through cancer deaths of both of my parents, I found this difficult to read. Secondly, I am not a fan of books told from several different perspectives. Not at all! For the right readers, ghis could be a big hit, but not for me.
This novel will be a great choice for readers who enjoy family secrets and dialogues about the characters’ feelings. Unfortunately, that is not me. I was interested in the inheritance and what I thought was a game that the recently deceased father would force his estranged children to play. I misunderstood the synopsis and expected a treasure hunt through the old manor. Instead, this is a series of conversations exposing family resentments and childhood grievances. This is not a bad book at all, it was just not really a mystery so much as drama. Yes, there are secrets, twists and unexpected revelations, they were just not what I find to be suspenseful. For the right readers this will be a 4-star book. I’m rating it based on my own enjoyment keeping in mind this is not my genre.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, NetGalley/Storm Publishing.
Just wow! This tangled story about siblings had my mind blown! I feel exhausted it was a real roller coaster of darkness and deception that I just couldn’t put down. I hardly know what to say apart from it was bloody brilliant! Really good book, I highly recommend it.
Three siblings are reunited after the death of their father, and according to the terms of his will, they must spend time in the family home to claim their inheritance. In the walls are the secrets there passing… So many family, secrets, so many twists, and turns, I absolutely loved this book!
This is the first book I read this author, and it definitely will not be the last!
