Eleven years ago, Liv stayed at home whilst her husband Rich took their young son Maddox to fly his new kite. Although Maddox was later found, this was the last time Liv saw Rich. Four years ago, without a body being found, Rich was pronounced dead.
Liv has a job at the local school but since her husband’s disappearance, she is trying to make ends meet. Furthermore, Liv is struggling with life and often finds herself with a bottle of wine for company during her lonely evenings.
Liv is waiting for some money she was promised long ago, to set her and her son up for life. But there are others who know about this money and want it too. Was Liv ever meant to get the money and who will go to great lengths to get their hands on it.
This book had a slow start for me. It wasn’t easy to follow as the plot was so intricate and I found it difficult to see how the characters were linked, especially when the big twist was revealed. I really liked there were lots of other twists throughout the book and overall, I did enjoy it, but it’s not my favourite by this author.
This is another thriller from the wonderful K.L Slater that has you hooked immediately. The writer has a talent for writing complex thrillers with many twists and turns which leave you guessing right until the very end. This is no different. Very enjoyable and highly recommended.
Thank you for NetGalley and KL Slater for offering this ARC in exchange my opinion.
In K.L. Slater's compelling novel, "The Married Man," I found myself drawn into a web of complex emotions and intricate relationships. The narrative unfolds through a rich tapestry of well-developed characters, each grappling with their own challenges and moral dilemmas. KL Slater masterfully captures the nuance of human relationships, presenting a story that is as engaging as it is thought-provoking, allowing readers to reflect on the themes of love, betrayal, and the consequences of choices made in moments of passion. It hooked my nerve and I couldn't put it down.
3.5 stars.
This was a chaotic story told from multiple POVs. All stemming from bad investments and shitty people and lies told and promises unkept and false identities. This was a fun book but not a favorite. It had like, every mark of a thriller in it lol. I’m glad I read it because I found myself super intrigued by the plot and countless loose ends. What a ride.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this book. All opinions are totally my own.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this arc. I love the idea of a plot containing a "widow" where everyone thinks her husband is dead, but she helped plan it. Lots of secrets, and investigations into what is going on. It has different time frames and POVs, Overall a decent thriller
For 75% of this, it was a riveting read.
Liv married to Rich, have a three year old son Maddox. He takes him out to fly his kite, but Rich doesn't return home. Maddox is found alone. After seven years, he is officially declared dead.
Kait is married to Daniel and are expecting their first child. Kait has many problems. She starts to grow suspicious of Daniel when his behaviour changes.
I loved the short chapters as each was told from the points of view of Liv. Kait and Maddox. We also go back to when Rich went missing.
I can't give too much away as it would spoil the story.
I felt the last 25% of the story just got a bit too complicated. It lost its flow as there was too much information and explaining trying to tie up all the loose ends.
Overall, it was a good read with plenty of twists.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC in return for an honest review.
The Married Man by K. L. Slater keeps you on the edge of your seat from the very start. The story delves deep into the complexities of relationships, secrets, and betrayal, making you question everything you think you know about the characters.
The protagonist is brilliantly written—strong, vulnerable, and deeply relatable. As the tension builds and the plot twists keep coming, I found myself unable to put the book down, eager to uncover the truth. Slater’s talent for weaving suspense with emotional depth shines through in every chapter. I also love the shorter chapters.
The pacing is perfect, and the revelations are unexpected yet entirely satisfying. If you love thrillers packed with intrigue, mystery, and shocking twists, The Married Man is an absolute must-read. Highly recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you #Netgalley for the #ARC
More than a decade ago, Liv’s husband Rich went missing while on a kite-flying outing with their toddler son Maddox. Eleven years later, Kait is married to Daniel and pregnant with their first child when he starts acting strangely, being secretive, going out at weird times and staying out late, all the classic cheating husband nonsense. When Kait finds a note in Daniel’s pocket that contains Maddox’s unique pupil number, she knows her husband is hiding something big and she has to find out how Daniel is linked to Maddox and Liv.
The Married Man is what K.L. Slater does best: a twisty, complex plot full of secrets and lies that keeps you guessing the entire time. This nonlinear, multi-POV story grabbed me right from the prologue and is so readable and propulsive that I finished it within a day. Every time I thought I had everything figured out – oh no I didn’t! So suspenseful and surprising!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me an advance copy of this book.
The cover and title of the book is what sucked me into this whirlwind of events in this thriller. This was a great choice and a good read.
This is a very clever thriller, skilfully written by one of my favourite authors! KL slater never fails to disappoint, she’s such an accomplished writer. This is another excellent read that I raced through. Loved it!
A very gripping thriller. Kept me hooked from first chapter had so many twists and I couldn't put the book down
An absolutely gripping page turner! Told from multiple POVs, the main focus of the story is Olivia's husband, Richard, who disappeared 11 years ago and, as per their agreement, should be making a move to return Liv and their son, Maddox, starting with a large financial payment today!
The story is also told by Maddox, a well-behaved young teen, who is about to be caught up in something very dangerous, and Kait, pregnant with her first child and worried that her husband, Daniel, is keeping secrets from her.
When there is no sign of the money, Liv wonders if Richard ever intended to keep his word and when Kait approaches her with something she can't ignore, it gets twisty, tense and very dangerous.
Some very clever red herrings had me guessing right to the end - be careful who you trust!
5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, K. L. Slater and Bookouture, for an ARC in return for an honest review.
I love K L Slater’s writing and think she writes stories that are so hard to predict.
Liv is a single mum to a teenage son, Maddox, after her husband Rich vanished 11 years ago. There’s been no sightings of him since and Liv has had to move house and bring up her son on her own. But all is not what it seems……
Because Rich had to stay away. He and Liv have a pact that after enough time has passed, he will send her enough money to set her and Maddox up for life. But when this doesn’t happen and Liv has nowhere to turn, answers start to come from an unexpected encounter….
A really gripping book. Would highly recommend.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read and review.
K.L Slater is one of my favourite thriller authors. Her ideas and concepts are so unusual, and always leave you second guessing yourself. This was no exception. Whilst I didn't love the ending completely, this had me hooked from the start. You read it thinking you've got it all sussed, but you don't. It's addictive and thrilling, and dark in places. It's a great read
Well K.L Slater has done it again another fantastic psychological thriller which kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. I loved this I think this may be my favourite book so far from this author they just get better and better. The suspense throughout was so gripping told from two different perspectives which definitely helped build up the suspense. I loved the writing style and how well the characters were written. Overall I loved this thriller and will be recommending this to everyone. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this fantastic book.
This book is a psychological thriller with multiple POVs, a fast pace and many plot twists.
It is a page turner that can be read in one sitting.
The prolog got me interested. It takes place 11 year before, when Rich goes missing. He was married to Liv and had a son, named Maddox. But it seems this is part of a plan.
After 11 years, we have other POVs. Kait is married to Daniel and she suspects that he is cheating on her. They met 3 year ago and she is pregnant. When she finds a note with a message she asks her sister for help. That note links her to Liv and Maddox and the plot get more complicated.
Even of there are many characters, I did not get confused and could follow the plot pretty easily. I liked the ending and that the information was revealed bit by bit and not all at once.
Overall I would say this is an enjoyable read.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley and Bookouture. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Love this authors work, always a one sitting read for me ! Eleven years ago, my husband disappeared. Eleven long hard years I waited, my heart breaking for our son, who didn’t know his father was coming back.
Today, my hands shake as I try to understand what I’ve just learned: my husband has a new wife. This wasn’t part of our plan.
Eleven years ago, my husband made a terrible mistake. I sacrificed everything to help him fix it. But now he’s put our son and me in danger again.
Three cheers for the author because they have done it again… I opened this book and I was lost straight away… brilliant story… fast-paced… I just love this author… 5 stars, of course.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I was not disappointed. This book is fully of suspense with a lot of secrets and lies uncovered. There are twists and turns which I love. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the book. I love a good psychological thriller where I can’t put the book down! I highly recommend this book and plan to read more books by the author.
Omg what a book! Couldn’t put this book down. Lots of twists and turn. This book draws you in from the very beginning , you don’t want to put it down! Every time you think you have solved part of the puzzle your mind is blown! Highly recommend!
The Married Man is a fast paced read with an interesting plot. Told in multiple point of views, you can get into the head of the characters and see what they’re thinking………and try to figure out what they are hiding. This thriller had a few twists and turns and kept me turning the page. Another great story from K.L. Slater.
