Loved this story ! The focus was on Lenny trying to “live again” after losing her best friend. The love story was second but not throwing in as an after thought. Miles’s need to take care of not only Lenny but Reese and Anisley while he himself was still grieving his mother and cousin.

Promise Me Sunshine depicts every aspect and phase of grief so earnestly and honestly, while also making you laugh out loud and feel so much for these characters.

Lenny is in the depths of her grief after losing her best friend. She’s barely surviving but putting on a sunshine exterior for her family and friends so no one worries about her. Until she meets Miles who sees her and tries to help her navigate her grief as he has had to do before.

I truly don’t think there is anything more beautiful than someone seeing you at your absolute worst and wanting to be there to support you getting back to your “sunshine”. Lenny never feels like she has to pretend around Miles and allows him to see all the ugliness of her grief and he still sticks around and helps her pick up the pieces of her life.

Everyone’s experiences with grief differ, however, Bastone did a wonderful job of accurately depicting the isolation, the guilt, and the overall struggles that are daily battles when you’re in the depths of grief.

I could go on about this book forever. Two broken people coming together and finding their happy ever after, which isn’t perfect but messy and complicated, but happy together, is just the best ever. Please read this book!

As someone who lost a friend to cancer this book really hit me in the feels. I loved the emphasis on healing and that he waited for her to go through the process before becoming a couple. A beautiful story!

I really really enjoyed this book! It was such a beautiful depiction of grief and how it truly changes you. I LAUGHED so hard through the entire book. Lenny was someone I want to be BFFs with. wow wow where to begin.. this book was beautiful. Heartbreaking and beautiful. The grief in this book really hit me hard.. it was so eye opening to read about.. Lenny going through the stages of grief and the motions and learning to navigate life without her best friend was at times so hard to read about because I mean that’s the reality of life right?.. people get sick and they don’t end up making it and we’re stuck dealing and learning a whole new life without this person with us.. it was emotional. Miles.. sweet beautiful Miles. I loved this man with my whole heart. He picked Lenny up every time. He never left her alone and helped her navigate this grief since he went through his own experience as we learn in the book. He also taught her to be on her own and make new friends.. in exchange she helped him better his relationship with his niece and his half sister which was the cutest while reading🥺🫶🏻 this is indeed a slow burn which I hate, but I enjoyed it in this one because I cared more about the journey these 2 were on than them jumping right into bed (which did not happen till the very end) I also applaud the author for how she wrote the sex scene because it wasn’t perfect. It was messy and that’s what first times can be like.. messy. This is my second book by this author and I don’t want it to be my last that’s forsure🫶🏻❤️

I didn’t think anything could be as good as Ready Or Not, but Cara Bastone has delivered another perfect, swoon-worthy, funny (!!), emotional, and joyful read. I loved Promise Me Sunshine so much and can’t wait for you to get your hands on this book (March 4, 2025) because I know you’ll love it too.

This was cute! It just didn't capture me as much as her other one did. I had a pleasurable reading experience overall. The characters were cute and witty.

This is a book about healing from raw grief. It’s tender portrait of Lenny, who, six months after her best friend Lou’s death, rides the Staten Island ferry all night because she can’t bear to return to their shared flat. She’s a mess, barely eating, sleeping or looking after herself. After taking a temp nanny job looking after 8-year-old Ainsley, Lenny finds herself with a ‘grief wingman’, the grumpy Miles, Ainsley’s uncle. Miles is awkward with Ainsley and wants offers a trade. He’ll help Lenny with a ‘how to live to do list’ that she and Lou concocted, if she will help him bond with Ainsley.

This book tugged at my heartstrings. I got so invested in Lenny and Miles. Their romance was a perfectly paced slow-burn as Miles helps Lenny undertake various activities around New York to help her find her way. I just wanted to hug Lenny. She feels completely alone and desperately missing Lou, her soulmate. Miles understands their bond and what Lenny needs as she tries to get through the rawness of her grief and find a way to let in pockets of light back into her life.

Cara Bastone really knocked this out of the park as she conveys Lenny's pain. This book is touching, life-affirming and poignant, while carefully balancing the swoony, slow-burn romance.

Thank you @netgalley for the arc! I fell head over heels for Cara’s book Ready or Not, and I never imaged this one would be even better, but man she outdid herself.

My fellow Emily Henry girls, I am begging you on my hands and knees to pick up this book when it releases. This book is grief, and change, and companionship, and joy, and love all wrapped around you like your favorite blanket.

Let’s start by saying that our main character Lenny is absolutely hilarious. Despite the heavy topics discussed, there’s a lightness and hopefulness to the tone of the book, and I attribute a lot of that to Lenny and Miles’ back and forth banter.

And Miles, oh my sweet Miles. An absolute teddy bear of a man hiding behind his hard exterior. The way he cared for Lenny and brought her through her grief had me melting and swooning!

Ainsley and Reese are also the most captivating supporting characters. As someone who works with kids often, I’m a little picky about how they’re written, but I fell in love with Ainsley immediately!

Ultimately, Lenny’s journey of learning to live again ripped me open and sewed me back together. Cara I’ll read anything you write!

This story immediately pulled me in with its emotional depth. The main character, struggling after losing a close friend, is completely lost, and her journey through grief is portrayed in a deeply authentic way. Her vulnerability and pain are palpable, making it easy to connect with her from the start.

At first, she gets help from someone she wasn’t particularly interested in, even feeling indifferent toward him. But as the story unfolds, their relationship begins to change. Slowly, the barriers between them fade, and they form a connection that grows unexpectedly stronger.

The pacing of their evolving relationship is handled with such care. The gradual development of their bond makes each moment between them feel significant and genuine. Their transition from strangers to friends, and eventually to something more, is filled with tension, uncertainty, and anticipation, making the journey feel rich and layered.

The story allows their relationship to grow naturally, without rushing the emotional connection. By the time they move from friends to lovers, the depth of their bond feels authentic and well-earned. This is a perfect read for anyone who enjoys relationships that build slowly and meaningfully over time.

I adored Ready or Not by Cara Bastone when I read it a few months ago, and I was delighted to see her upcoming novel on Netgalley. (And I was thrilled when a tiny crossover cameo popped up in Promise Me Sunshine!).

Promise Me Sunshine is not a cookie cutter copy of Ready or Not, which I appreciated so much. Yes, much of the praise I had for Ready or Not is transferable...the characters were endearing, the storylines were realistic but oh so charming, and the relationship chemistry was achingly perfect. Both novels focus on heroines dealing with unexpected life changes. 

Promise Me Sunshine, however, heavily focuses on grief after losing a loved one. It's charmingly hilarious, I promise(!), but the core theme of the plot is grief and depression. The author beautifully explores the complex emotional journey of our main character after her best friend's death. 

Two amazing books in a row cements Cara Bastone as one of my favorite romance authors, and I look forward to reading more of her backlist.

"Promise Me Sunshine" by Cara Bastone is sweet and heart-warming while also tackling the tough subject of grief. Somehow beautifully weaving together real and raw aspects of grief while also keeping it light-hearted and funny, Bastone does an incredible job of telling the story of these characters who are able to help each other navigate their grief but also avoid co-dependency.

PROMISE ME SUNSHINE was just so lovely! Cara Bastone has cemented herself as one of my favorite contemporary adult romance authors with this book. It tackles loss and grief with care, and the romance was perfectly imperfect. This was an Emily Henry-level read for me and I don't make that comparison lightly.

This is my first book by this author and I am absolutely in love. This book is so so so special. This is a slow burn which touches on topics of grief, loss of a loved one, living again, found family and the love we need. She was delicate yet raw in her delivery and was able to take such a difficult and triggering topic and create such a beautiful message for readers.

I loved both the main characters. Lenny shows us everything. The good, the bad, the messy and everything in between. It’s hard for me to describe what Miles show us but to put it simply, he was everything Lenny and the audience needed and wanted him to be. The chemistry and banter between the two characters was amazing and you find yourself rooting for them both individually and together. I found myself loving the side characters immensely which added so much depth to the story. Can we get a Reese and Ainsley follow up please & thank you ?! 😅

They go on such an inspiring journey together dealing with their loss of loved ones. I felt immersed in the story beginning to the end. The relatability of the story and characters allowed me to continuous reflect on my own life and experience throughout which made it even more special.

Absolute perfection! I was seriously crying through the entire book! If it wasn’t because of how heart-wrenching it was, it was because Miles was just too darn adorable! I couldn’t stop myself. I was reading it on a plane, and the flight attendant gave me six napkins with my drink because he saw my face—yep, that kind of book! It’s emotional, sweet, and absolutely unforgettable. I already want to reread it and experience it all over again. This is a true masterpiece. All the stars, plus some more!

This was an easy five-star read for me! After loving Ready or Not and devouring Promise Me Sunshine*, Cara Bastone has officially become an auto-buy author for me. While this story’s main focus wasn’t on romance—something I don’t usually gravitate toward—it explored the profound topic of coping with the loss of a loved one and finding a way to keep going once. That being said, the romance between Lenny and Miles was absolutely perfect. Their relationship was built on an incredible friendship, and while the romance was a slow burn, it felt natural and right for the story. I loved every single thing about this book. Five stars!

This book felt so perfect to me because it reminded me of one of my favorite movies ever, Uptown Girls. When readers are first introduced to Lenny, shes quirky and weird and to be honest I was a little put off, but very quickly I realized that thats just who she is and her characterization was SO good. Then we meet Miles, who is also a little off putting at first, but within the first quarter of the book you start to love him. Throughout the book, you learn to love the characters and see their real life, relatable struggles with friendship, family, and grief. I would definitely recommend this book and I’m so excited to see what Cara Bastone releases next.

I didn’t think anyone could sit at the top with Abby Jimenez or Rachel Lynn Solomon but Cara has become one of those authors to me. Lenny’s struggle with grief throughout this book was something I cocooned in, as I related to it so much. Sometimes it’s easier to sit in the hole than climb out. It’s usually loved ones that convince you to do so and I adored how much Miles kept Lenny (and the readers) moving. There were undertones of the romance tropes we all love so much, but the moments where Lenny is just surviving is when I loved her most. My husband kept hearing me laugh in the other room and would walk in to ask what I was watching. Nothing to see here, I’m just reading a Cara Bastone book!
