This is my first book from Dragonblade and author Elizabeth Heights! I was blown away! I could not put this book down. It was very well written and I feel as if I was transported back in time to the 13th century. I really enjoyed Kitty and Guy's story! I also appreciate that the author gave readers a very statisfactory ending. I am looking forward to reading more from Elizabeth Heights!
What Happens When Love and Deception Collide?
Kitty’s father wagered with an earl and lost her mother's jewels. However, she came to find out that she, too, was a part of the wager. Kitty vowed to get her mother's jewels from the earl, so she set off to the castle as a servant. This was a dangerous endeavor, indeed. The earl’s father was a bounder of the worst sort. Was his son like him? Kitty was about to uncover the truth.
Kitty expected to find a cad at the castle, but she would find a kind earl. She would come to fall in love, but she was there to get the family jewels back from Guy. Her disguise was a deception. Would the earl forgive her should he discover the truth? Would Kitty steal the jewels, or would she tell Guy the truth? For the answers, you might want to read this delightful tale. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to lovers of medieval romance. This was my first book by this author, but it would not be my last.
⭐️⭐️Gambling with the Earl by Elizabeth Heights is book one in the “Earls of the North” series and I was hooked from the very first page! ⭐️⭐️
Although this is the first book I have read by Elizabeth Heights I know I will definitely be reading more of her work in the future. This story takes you back to Regency England and expertly combines the unique backdrop with characters full of wit, romance that makes you swoon, and an intriguing plot that keeps you quickly turning the pages.
The plot follows Lady Amelia, a determined and intelligent woman who unexpectedly finds herself entangled with the enigmatic and dashing Earl of Loxley. As they navigate the glittering world of high society, they discover that love, like gambling, comes with risks—but also with the promise of great rewards. Heights has an incredible talent for creating chemistry between her characters, and the banter between Amelia and the Earl is electric.
What makes this book truly shine is the balance between romance and character depth. Lady Amelia is not just a damsel in distress; she's a bold, independent woman, making her a standout protagonist. The Earl, too, is more than just a charming aristocrat—his backstory and personal struggles add layers to his character, making their connection feel genuine and hard-earned.
Elizabeth Heights' writing style brings every scene to life, from the bustling ballrooms to the quiet, heartfelt moments shared between the leads. The pacing is perfect, building up to an emotional climax that left me with a smile on my face. Fans of Regency romance will undoubtedly be swept off their feet by this enchanting story.
*"Gambling with the Earl"* is a must-read for anyone looking for a love story with heart, humor, and a bit of risk.

Once she meets Derek, the Earl of Trembley, they eventually decide to work together to separate the couple. But guilt is hard to ignore when they realize her sister and his brother really love each other. You can't help but feel sorry for the couple with their siblings devious plans to break up the engagement. Mabel's disastrous first marriage still makes her leery of marriage. Then disaster strikes again or is it? To trust the earl completely will take an act of faith.
Very little humor with more nail biting. Descriptive sex.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book from NetGalley.
It is a lovely tale about Kitty, a lady disguised as a servant, and Guy, the Earl of Rossfarne. She needs to win back the jewels for her sister's dowry and he is skeptical of anyone near his prized possession. But can he trust her?
I liked the story. It was intriguing and I love how slowly they built their relationship from being boss/employee to a somewhat unusual friendship then to lovers. I felt like some things weren't wrapped up nicely (i.e.: what was really happening in that tower and what was inside beside the bed, as also Thomas' theft) and I prefer a book a little more spicy so I'm giving this 3.5 stars.
(Also 3.5 on a spice scale)
This book was really good! The romance was very well written and I loved the main characters. I would highly recommend!
This is the first book in The Earl's of the North series. It is an exciting and entertaining medieval romance. The story has so many dramatic and interesting twits that kept me engaged. I enjoyed the characters and how this romance begins. I recommend reading!
I believe this is a new author and the first book in a new series. I enjoyed Kitty's determination and loyalty to her sister after their dad gambled away all they had in the world. Guy, the Earl who has won her in a wager didn't expect a happy life when he came home. What he got was a house maid who was more then he could handle. There are a number of humorous places sprinkled throughout the story as well as some very poignant ones. Overall, it was a lovely story, well written with just enough detail. The ending was a bit rushed yet I think that's because the next book picks up where this one leave off.
1. Overview:
In this historical romance in 1296 Miss Katherine Alden is tragically wronged by her drunken gambling father. He gambles away her sister's dowry and his daughter to the new Earl of Rossfarne. But she will not stand for it. In disguise, she is determined to retrieve what was wrongfully taken from her and her sister, but in return discovers so much more.
2. What did I like:
- I like that the plot thickens because of missed encounters.
- The humor that plays out between the Earl-Guy and Miss Alden–Kitty because Kitty acts like a lady while disguised as a servant girl.
- The description of the scenery is beautiful and the author is credited because she does not draw out the description.
3. What I did not like:
- The ending was a bit anti-climatic and stretchy. Too much still happens after the story could have ended satisfactorily.
4. Ratings and Final Thoughts:
The story was easy to read and entertaining. This was a downright sweet story that played out in a short time frame. I would rate Gambling with the Earl by Elizabeth Heights 4 out of 5
This is the first book I have read by this author. I found it witty in places and tragic in others. The attraction between Guy and Kitty is evident from the beginning and despite the rumors Kitty has heard, he is an honorable man. The plot is set during the reign of King Edward I, however, the language is modern and some idiomatic speech is used. Despite lies and accusations, the book does come to a sweet conclusion but ends rather abruptly. I received a copy of this romance as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
her father had gambled all his money away so the daughter who is the main character rosalind are left destitute.
so rosalind has to try to get them back an the father that gambled his money away was to this guy had some issues.
good story quick read, i love the cover of the book.
Kitty's father has gambled away his own daughter and the family jewels to Guy the Earl of Rossfarne. Kitty and her younger sister, Rosalind are left destitute. Kitty devises a plan to pose as a serving maid to gain entrance his castle and steal the jewels back.
The man she finds is not who she thought he would be. He's injured from a battle wound. He's kind to her. She nurses him back to health. Both of these people are really lonely and it's beautiful to see them both open up to each other. An encounter with her singing to him made me misty eyed.
I love these two characters. I was very glad when the deception and great misunderstanding ended - although it could have been a wee bit sooner.
A fantastic book - - and a debut book too!!!
I look forward to rest of the series!
Thank you to netgalley for the ARC. Opinions are my own.
This is a story about a brave young woman, Kitty, who has been gambled away by her worthless drunk father, along with the family jewels, intended as dowry for Kitty’s younger sister. Kitty vows to get the jewels back and secretly invades the household as a maid, in order to search the house for the jewels.
Guy is a knight with a tormented soul due to his extensive injuries and the emotional scars from his horrible father.
The story started out a little bit slow. Kitty is under the assumption that Guy is a horrible man, because she heard the tales about his father and him taking the jewels as payment for her father’s gambling dept. So when he asked her to sing for him and said she was beautiful, it felt wrong. She might have felt forced and scared to refuse, and I would didn’t like that. But after that their bond grew because he started to depend on her nursing skills, helping him recover after his injury. Their relationship became more equal and so I saw the potential there for it to evolve in a beautiful bond. I liked the story, it is a nice story about a young woman taking charge of her life and a man being healed by kindness. I would have liked to know what happened to Thomas’ apparent thievery? And the conclusion of the story was a bit sudden, but maybe that’s just me. The book ends with a cliffhanger regarding Guy’s friend Otto, so you can jump right on to the next book.
If you are looking for a ‘beauty and the beast’ kind of story with a twist, this is the book for you.
This story kept me glued to the pages with their drama and had me cheering them on to finding their happiness! I would recommend this book to all my friends and family.
