This book aims to educate the reader about transformational wellness and holistic healing of patients. Dr. Jeff Crippen DC shares his personal story of experiencing almost unbearable headaches and pain when he was younger but the medical system failed him and doctors could not figure out what was wrong with him or how to help. The author reveals the journey he went on to make himself well again, putting emphasis on preventative medicine and focus on improving health, not just preventing disease. This was an interesting read for me as I am a physical therapist and feel I connect with much of what he says in this book. The author states it is important to look at the whole picture of the person instead of just one piece of the story, which is what I do as a PT. I do think our society would benefit more from focusing on being healthy over treatment of disease, especially via overuse of medications that can each cause their own set of side effects. Preventative measures can be very beneficial, whether it be addressed mentally, emotionally, physically, and psychologically. I do think at times the wording was a bit dismissive of modern medicine and how advantageous it still is in our society so I think it is important to take the advice with a grain of salt. I definitely understand the frustrations of the lack of specialized care for each patient in our medical system and that it can be better. I loved the focus near the end on stress and cortisol levels as I think this is definitely something that plays a major role in how our bodies function, but because it is difficult to measure, is often neglected. Holistic medicine is more of a gray area in the medical community but I think it is great to raise awareness of the many different holistic options because it is beneficial for so many patients in ways modern medicine cannot address. The narrator does an excellent job in reading the book to keep the reader engaged throughout. It is a quick and interesting read and I would recommend it for those interested in this topic! Thank you to NetGalley, Dr. Jeff Crippen DC, and Innate Press for the gifted ARC audiobook recording in exchange for an honest review.
