Having just read Many Sparrows, I was delighted to see Wildcat and Wolf-Alone appear in this story, but in their English personas: Cade and Jesse Bird.

Once again Lori Benton deals with historical subject matter with expertise and great detail. Her characters are complex and realistic, her romance clean and passionate yet not steamy, and an always present spiritual content.

Tamsen was a woman caught in her time period where arranged marriages were the norm, but her stepfather had only one thought in mind for her and that was to have her married to a wealthy man to cover his own squandering in drink etc. In order to save herself from her stepfather's evil dealings and her own possible death by his hand, her only choice was to run assisted by Jesse due to a chance meeting.

Jesse and Cade, whom Jesse thought of as his father, were both white men who had spent most of their lives living as Indians. They were brave and skillful and knew exactly how to care for Tamsen when her stepfather and the man he wanted her to marry decided to pursue Tamsen. They were also both men who had a strong faith and depended on Jesus in their daily lives. The ending contained several surprises that I definitely didn't expect which I really enjoyed.

Benton has penned another wonderful historical adventure that kept me entertained through every page.

Did you ever have a great book at the wrong time? This was the case for me and this book. I first started this book in 2014 when it was hot off the shelf at my library. For some reason I couldn't get into it. I just had no attention span. So I set it aside. Then I saw it on Netgalley in 2018. I have changed as a reader these last few years and have gone and read and really enjoyed books I had previously not been able to finish.

That being said I now really enjoyed this book! I loved the action and nonstop quality of the plot! I love how the author took you on quite the journey! I feel as if I made a trek while reading this right along with the characters. Well written and worth a 5 star rating.
