I found this book helpful and it came to me at the perfect time. After moving three months ago and stuffing whatever food I could in my mouth while life felt so busy the scale started really creeping up. The reminder to slow down and practice more mindfulness was definitely needed. I appreciate the copy of this book through NetGalley.

This was an overall fair book. I like all the true stories about people overcoming issues. It was inspirational but it didn't have any new information. I wish there was a new nugget to take away but overall just another typical health book.

Deprogram Diet Culture is a self help book that takes the world of dieting and turns it around. Dr. Tovar takes the listener through science backed research and strategies to engage a different viewpoint to healthy eating, and body positivity. This book is not a substitute for medical advice.

From the beginning I liked the science behind the digestive system, and explaining why ‘diets’ tend to fail in the long run for most people. An interesting explanation that was added was ‘lookism’ and ‘weightism’. Once explained, the meanings and uses in daily life rang very true.
Dr. Tovar uses case studies, research and exercises to help readers on the path of breaking the diet culture. There were some really good tips in there that I think everyone should take on board.

The one thing that I did notice was after explaining some case studies or exercises, there were little sentences like ‘you too can begin feeling (xyz) if you follow these simple steps’ or ‘like this person you can stop having feelings of (xyz) if you follow these steps’. This, to me, sounded very sales-pitchy and I didn’t like it.

The audio was excellent. It was easy to understand, and I was able to listen at 2x speed with no issues of losing words. It is good that Dr. Tovar, herself, narrates the book. I could hear the passion come through in the audio

Deprogram Diet Culture is a unique self help book that looks at the science of why diets fail in most people, and leads people on a journey of body positivity, mindfulness, and other exercises to move people into a different way of eating for the long term.

I recommend this book to those who struggle with yo yo dieting, and want to look into a long term solution to healthy weight and eating habits. This book is not a substitute for medical advice, and I would recommend anyone to talk to their healthcare provider if they are making any major dietary changes, or if they have any psychological issues when it comes to food and/or weight.
Thank you to Netgalley and ANEW for the Advanced Listener’s Copy (ALC) of this book. All opinions are my own.

An interesting look into the way psychology intersects with eating and diet. Some of the advice seems actionable, but seems like more of a sell for her program.

I loved listening to this audiobook. It is read by the author, and her voice is very soothing and motivating. I would sometimes listen to the book on my daily walks and found it very calming and therapeutic. When the author said that carbs were not bad and that our brains and body needed them, I was all in! I could tell the author was both knowledgeable and passionate about the information she was sharing. I found myself putting some of the tips and tools to use before I had even finished the book. One thing she said was to sometimes pause which I did before eating a second sandwich, and found that after a short pause, I no longer wanted the sandwich. I loved the 2 min mantra which I have started using along with creating tiny helpful and anchoring habits. This is a book that is good to have on your bookshelf as well as an audio version on your phone. I will put many of the tools to practice and keep revisiting this book. The author makes it easy to revisit chapters, by restating in each chapter which chapter you can find specific topics in. I really appreciated the way she gave an overview throughout chapters. This is a wonderful and helpful book to read.

A positive and practical book with personal stories which you can actually relate to. Really easy to listen to, and it was lovely to hear the author read her book. There's always a doubt in my mind when reading books like this that it's going to be the same info repeated in different words, but this included medical research and a different perspective I actually enjoyed.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me the chance to read this early. This book is a very basic intro into how you change your mindset around food, eating, body image, etc. The tips are things like watch who you're following on social media, slow down and eat mindfully, mantras etc. and as someone who reads a lot on this topic it wasn't anything new.

Format review: 5/5

I really enjoy listening to audiobooks narrated by the author themselves, Dr. Tovar has a very pleasant voice I loved listening to.

Content review: 3/5

I have struggled with eating disorders for a very big part of my life, so the title of this book intrigued me very much. I didn’t have high expectations but after reading about the author and her incredible number of qualification - psychology degree and she is also a dietitian??? Sounds great! - I was very hopeful.

The first half of the book was perfect, I learned a lot about the science behind our bodies and how it processes hunger and food: stuff like the body’s starvation response, hunger and fullness cues, the dangers of mindless and emotional eating and many more... everything was explained in a very accessible and understandable way. I also appreciated the chapter where she talks about setting boundaries with people who judge you or try to interfere with your fitness journey.

On the other hand, the second part of this book was very repetitive and if I am honest annoying. You can summarize the second part of the book in one-word sentence: “Meditate!”. I know meditation can be beneficial in a lot of aspects in people’s lives, but it was brought up so many times that at the end I was just irritated by the constant meditate, meditate, read mantras, and then meditate again….
I liked the personal examples from the people Dr. Tovar has treated but sometimes it felt like too many examples and too many names and it led to me being confused: “who are we talking about again?”

To summarize it in one sentence I liked the first part of the book a lot more than I liked the second. Would I recommend this book? Maybe? I think I would. In my opinion everybody can benefit from eating more consciously and mindfully and even though I didn’t like the meditation part of the book maybe it will be helpful to someone else :)

This was quite the Informative and helpful book. It gave a lot of insight into sensible, healthy eating in order to maintain a healthy weight. The key is eating consciously and mindfully. The author did a great job as the narrator - you can feel that she really knows her stuff and is passionate in her quest to help. It'd highly recommend this to anyone looking to readjust their eating habits and learning how to be healthier.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the early look at this audio book. I found it very helpful.

This is a book that I wished I had read as a young adult (I am now 55). I grew up in a culture where skinny was in, and it was and still is encouraged through almost every type of communication I encounter. With this mindset, it has been so hard to accept myself as I am, excess weight and all. The author described how to change my mindset about food and my relationship with it. Dr. Tovar doesn't talk down to the reader yet explains in terminology that is easily understood, provides examples that are relatable, and makes suggestions on what and how to change the way we think about food, including how to just think of food as just food. I am currently seeing a dietician to help me eat better, and I am going to recommend this book to her at our next meeting. Every person who has struggled with their weight and the way they view themselves based on their size should read this book. While it's not a resource-laden, highly sophisticated lecture on what to eat, when to eat, or how much to eat, it does give sound advice on changing our brilliant minds to the way we were meant to think about food....as sustenance. I also enjoyed that I could listen to this in one sitting; it was short enough and engaging enough to listen to in one afternoon. Great read!

Dr. Supatra Tover provides a step by step approach to rejecting diet culture and exploring mindful eating in her book Deprogram Diet Culture: Rethink Your Relationship with Food, Heal Your Mind, and Live a Diet-Free Life. As a psychologist and a nutritionist, Dr. Tovar provides a research based approach to addressing a diet-mindset. She focuses on changing ones mindset and behaviors to have a better relationship with food. Her approach is based on cognitive behavioral therapy as well as intuitive eating. She focuses on habits and rewards to reinforce the positive behaviors.

I enjoyed this book. It was well organized and provided actionable tasks to develop a positive relationship with food. The audiobook stated there were companion materials, yet I was unable to access them through the website provided. The companion materials should have included meditations, a mindful eating journal, and a cookbook. These would be valuable resources to healing your relationship with food.

Deprogram Diet Culture By Dr Supatra Tovar

Very interesting read, albeit nothing earth shattering or new, the way Dr Supatra Tovar explains each point is very affirming and really sinks in. The main takeaway for me is mindfulness. I also appreciated the meditation portion of this audio book.

Thank you Net Galley for an advanced copy of this audio book in exchange for my honest review.

An accessible and evidence based practical guide to tackling a challenging issue for many people. As a qualified psychologist and dietician the author writes from a credible position and offers a helpful guide for those interested in this field be it as a professional or patient.
The audiobook was very well narrated by the author herself.
I am grateful to the publishers and NetGalley for an advanced listener copy of this helpful book.

This was an excellent source of the science behind why we eat, and why diets do not work. Dr. Supatra Tovar also provides some tools and strategies to identify many aspects around eating habits both negative and positive. I do wish there was a constant repeated mantra to work with a trusted therapist. The steps provided are great, but I think a reminder of professional support is huge. I also appreciate the chapter on relapsing into those thought patterns that the author included, because changing our relationship with food is a long hard process.

I discovered this audiobook in the Listen Now section on NetGalley - thank you!

This relatively short book presents a fresh and interesting perspective on the ubiquitous diet culture and “thinspiration” trends. It shows us how to break free from the frustrating dieting cycle, stop punishing our bodies, obsessing over food and treating it like an enemy, how to start living a healthier life and take good care of our body and mind. It definitely inspired me to rethink my relationship with food and my eating habits.

The narrator did a good job, although their tone was overly enthusiastic at times and it didn’t sound natural to me.

I would recommend this book to readers who want to reflect on their relationship with food and create new, better eating habits.

I follow anti-diet culture and intuitive eating accounts on my social media and was curious to see if the messages online paralleled what would be in this book. It was validating to listen to the audiobook and have my beliefs and online teachings reconfirmed for me. What makes this book stand out from when I see on my online feed are the techniques introduced on how one can become a more intuitive and mindful eater. Although the audiobook format has guided meditations included, I think buying the physical book is more beneficial because there are some writing exercises recommended for the reader to do and having a way to book mark those prompts/questions for when you have your next meal would be helpful. It also sounded like you can scan a QR code while reading the physical book to access the same guided meditations and audio bonuses.
