Deprogram Diet Culture is a must-read for those who are tired of the weight-loss industry’s false promises and want to take back control of their mental and physical health. It’s a compassionate, empowering guide that encourages self-acceptance and offers a healthier, happier way of living without being shackled by diet culture.
very informative. thank you netgalley for the advanced copy of this book. being female in america diet culture is something we are born into. hoping to implement what i learned into my life.
Finally, a "diet" book that was actually about retraining your mind to stop the villainizing of food, understand where your food relationship comes from, and to ignore all of the diet culture we're bombarded with 24/7 and instead love yourself. SO REFRESHING and liberating. Great advice, insights and stories shared here that make this book immensely healing and useful.
This book would be most helpful for folks who haven't immersed themselves in health and nutrition, as I have at this point in my life. Lots of great information and sharing of people's struggles to give readers/listeners something they can relate to. This is definitely a much needed title, especially for younger people.
Such a great book full of wisdom. While always curious about what diet and self books have to say, I'm also a bit weary if it will resonate or be a waste of my time. However, I learned so much from Dr Tovar. I love how she digs into how culture and childhood experiences play a role in our eating habits now. Tips I've implemented and self awareness born from this read where a major help during the Holidays when I tend to overeat. I kept remembering how emotional eating is not just eating when we are sad or stress, it's also when we're feeling happy and festive. I plan to revisit this book within the year.
ARC via author and NetGalley. As someone who has struggled with weight most of my life but never wanted to hop on the diet bandwagon, this book was what I needed. It discussed the negative cycle that diet culture can place us in. The author did a great job of explaining research and why things work or don’t as well as giving easy manageable steps that can be taken to be more successful. I am a big fan of audiobooks and this one did not disappoint. The author has a great writing style and the narrator did a good job of keeping flow. The forward was great and the author selected for this portion was well planned and inspirational.
An interesting and insightful listen full of great information.
Provides a lot of food for thought-pun not intended.
'Deprogram Diet Culture' presents relatable examples, information, and pathways to guide you through releasing negative internal narratives of criticism/self doubt surrounding your body and food as well as learning to create healthy boundaries in numerous facets of your life. I was pleasantly surprised by how many takeaways I received from this book. The knowledge and skills discussed easily flows into following chapters in an easy-to-manage and not overwhelming manner. One concept that I especially enjoyed and will be implementing is anchoring new behaviors around existing routines. 'Deprogram Diet Culture' is a well written and narrated book that I'm glad I read. Thank you to NetGalley, Dr. Supatra Tovar, and ANEW for providing an ARC of this audiobook.
If you are new to mindful eating this may be a good introduction.
It gives you a few basic introductory steps to to the concept but doesn’t go into too much depth (for a more in depth path you can join her program for $250-$400 though!)
The first half of the book could be very helpful and informative to someone learning about mindful eating. I did love the detoxing from social media accounts and people in your life that make you feel poorly about yourself. However the second half of the book just seemed to be recalls of the first half and a bit repetitive.
I appreciate Dr Tovar’s background in both nutrition and psychology and hope those new to mindful eating can find some helpful tips in this book.
This was an enjoyable audiobook narrated by the author herself. I was engaged and interested throughout as the author has a very calming and encouraging voice. She does an excellent job incorporating mindfulness and other similar techniques to encourage the reader to improve their perception and relationship with not just food, but also overall health and wellbeing. The author uses many real-life examples to make the content more relatable. As someone who works in the healthcare field, I personally felt much of the information presented was common sense and not really groundbreaking or new in this field. I do think this is a helpful read for someone not as familiar with the subject to understand why diets often fail and how it is more important to make long term lifestyle changes rather than short term extreme changes that are unsustainable. I have been trying to be more mindful about my eating since listening to this and feel it is very helpful! I am glad I listened to this one and would recommend it for those interested in learning more on this topic! Thank you to NetGalley and Dr. Supatra Tovar for the gifted ALC in exchange for an honest review.
Dr Supatra Tovar in this book gives us the starting points looking at our weight issues differently, instead of lurching from diet to diet.
I found listening to this book (I listened to the audiobook) enlightening and has given me the enthusiasm to delve deeper. As advised small steps move you forward better than fixed unachievable goals.
As a mental health professional specializing in eating disorders, I loved this book! It has practical exercises to help individuals while they find a professional. The information was great and so easily digestible. I even learned some things I want to take into my practice.
Thank you Dr. Supatra Tovar, Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), Members' Audiobooks, and NetGalley for providing me with an Advanced Listener Copy in exchanged for a fair and honest review. I thoroughly appreciated it.
Positive and encouraging.
“If you want temporary change focus on your behaviors, if you want permanent change focus on your thoughts.” (Stephen Covey)
Things that stood out:
Helpful tips to analyze your social media and other advertising exposure.
Change your thoughts, not just behavior.
Exercise shouldn’t feel like a punishment, it should be enjoyable and leave you feeling happy and energetic. She suggests Yoga and Pilates.
Food is just food, drop the labels of good food and bad food.
Listen to your body. Relearn your hunger and fullness cues and pay attention to your body.
Distinguish between emotional/situational reasons vs physical reasons to eat:
Rumbling stomach, lightheadedness, and lack of energy = physical reasons.
Triggered by stress, sadness, or boredom and craving specific food = emotional reasons.
Respond to emotional need with self-care practices and physical with nourishing meals eaten mindfully.
Mindless vs mindful eating.
Realistic tiny specific goals.
Anchor new behaviors to existing habits.
5 stars! I listened to the audiobook read by the author in a pleasant calm voice.
Thanks to the publisher for a temporary digital copy via NetGalley.

While mindful eating and tuning into bodily cues is not a new concept, I appreciate how Dr Supatra Tovar addressed the science behind why diets fail, along with various behavior change practices that can support us to reimagine our relationship with food.
A useful and insightful book, which has given me much to think about. It has certainly made me review my relationship with food and I will return to it in the future, I’m sure.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC in audiobook format.

I found this book helpful and it came to me at the perfect time. After moving three months ago and stuffing whatever food I could in my mouth while life felt so busy the scale started really creeping up. The reminder to slow down and practice more mindfulness was definitely needed. I appreciate the copy of this book through NetGalley.
This was an overall fair book. I like all the true stories about people overcoming issues. It was inspirational but it didn't have any new information. I wish there was a new nugget to take away but overall just another typical health book.
Deprogram Diet Culture is a self help book that takes the world of dieting and turns it around. Dr. Tovar takes the listener through science backed research and strategies to engage a different viewpoint to healthy eating, and body positivity. This book is not a substitute for medical advice.
From the beginning I liked the science behind the digestive system, and explaining why ‘diets’ tend to fail in the long run for most people. An interesting explanation that was added was ‘lookism’ and ‘weightism’. Once explained, the meanings and uses in daily life rang very true.
Dr. Tovar uses case studies, research and exercises to help readers on the path of breaking the diet culture. There were some really good tips in there that I think everyone should take on board.
The one thing that I did notice was after explaining some case studies or exercises, there were little sentences like ‘you too can begin feeling (xyz) if you follow these simple steps’ or ‘like this person you can stop having feelings of (xyz) if you follow these steps’. This, to me, sounded very sales-pitchy and I didn’t like it.
The audio was excellent. It was easy to understand, and I was able to listen at 2x speed with no issues of losing words. It is good that Dr. Tovar, herself, narrates the book. I could hear the passion come through in the audio
Deprogram Diet Culture is a unique self help book that looks at the science of why diets fail in most people, and leads people on a journey of body positivity, mindfulness, and other exercises to move people into a different way of eating for the long term.
I recommend this book to those who struggle with yo yo dieting, and want to look into a long term solution to healthy weight and eating habits. This book is not a substitute for medical advice, and I would recommend anyone to talk to their healthcare provider if they are making any major dietary changes, or if they have any psychological issues when it comes to food and/or weight.
Thank you to Netgalley and ANEW for the Advanced Listener’s Copy (ALC) of this book. All opinions are my own.
An interesting look into the way psychology intersects with eating and diet. Some of the advice seems actionable, but seems like more of a sell for her program.
