Hugo's struggle to engage in relationships after suffering a personal tragedy may be relatable to some readers. As will the fact that he dives into his vet practice to keep himself occupied. Ellie is also a character that will likely resonate with many readers. I have not read a number of books that have a veterinarian as a main character, let alone two of them, so I appreciated that angle. Overall, this is a quick, clean read. There is a bit of a romance angle to it. Hugo and Ellie are easy characters to root for.
Dogs and veterinarians are the focus of this tale. Loss of loved ones and recovery in the grieving process is the backbone of the book. A sweet romance that does have an intimate scene which I skipped. No idea where this story takes place but it definitely isn't the United States. Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.
After living through a personal tragedy 10 years ago, Hugo has kept relationships at arms length. He keeps busy with his vet practice and running. When Ellie, also running from a bad situation turns up at the practice with her badly injured dog, the two begin to bond. Ellie is also a vet, so she takes on temporary work at the practice and uses the apartment while her house is under renovation.
This was a quick read, mostly clean, slow burn romance. Hugo is closed off, but as they get closer can Ellie break through? And what happens when she finds out about his tragic past?
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.
