Welcome to Billu’s world - where each day may be a little challenge, but he never lets it stop him, or change his positive attitude! Billu struggles to keep his shirt tucked in, his buttons lined, but never struggles with his self worth. Billu is a little boy whose confidence exudes freedom and self-acceptance in his everyday demeanor. Billu shares his positivity and acceptance of his imperfections and encourages his friends to do the same. As a former teacher, I can see where this book would be a great mini social lesson in self acceptance, perseverance in learning and building skills, and positive image of self. I also love the author’s relaying of his personal experience of perseverance in learning a new language at a young age and the positive affirmations activity for children at the end. What a great little read! I was provided an arc copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.
Great little short story with a powerful message - I'm fine just as I am!
Told in an easy to understand text, with cute illustrations throughout, it tells the story of Billu and how he can't quite do up his buttons properly, or tuck in his shirt but he doesn't mind that he isn't like everyone else
And more importantly, he is accepted just as he is.
Great read.
This is the first representation of Sikhs in which I've seen as a picture book. I believe the message shared is very sweet and also coincides with the religious beliefs of Sikhs being that all are equal no matter what.
"Billu's Buttons" is a heartwarming story that celebrates the beauty of being unique and embracing your own journey. Billu's confidence and independence make him an inspiring role model for kids. The book gently reminds young readers of an important truth: "I'm fine just as I am". With its adorable illustrations and uplifting message of self-acceptance, this book encourages children to love themselves just the way they are, imperfections and all. It's a sweet and empowering read for young hearts!
This was such a cute book, -- all around from the illustrations, to the characters, the story, everything. It's such a great way to teach young children an incredibly important affirmation: "I'm fine just as I am!"
This book is adorable and has the sweetest message of self-acceptance and embracing imperfections. I loved that this book featured a Sikh main character, giving other Sikh children the opportunity to see themselves represented as well as non-Sikh children the opportunity to be introduced to the Sikh faith. Regardless of one's own beliefs or background, many young readers will be able to relate to Billu as an independent, headstrong child who's determined to achieve improvement through practice.
I loved the message in this book especially as I was a Sikh and I grew up in America and I was different than all my classmates. This is a wonderful book that shows children that it is okay to be different than others.
This is just the CUTEST book my Kindergarteners LOVED!!!! Perfect for studying the letter B. My kids were laughing out loud at Billu!
Billu is an independent kid—he is determined to button his own shirt and tie his own shoes, even if he doesn’t do it right. He knows practice will make perfect, and as long as he believes in himself, he will be fine. Billu Buttons is Gus Singh’s debut picture book, in which Billu models the power of positive affirmations. Through the use of repetition and different fonts, the text encourages young readers to practice the affirmation with Billu—“I’m fine just as I am,” he says over and over again. The backmatter of this picture book also includes an author’s note, in which Singh describes a moment in his life where positive affirmations helped him as he learned a new skill. The backmatter also includes an activity for readers to further engage in using positive affirmations outside of Billu’s story. The art for this book is done by Delzin Choksey, who has also illustrated When Soha Comes to Town and The Adventures of the Pillow Gang. While Billu Buttons does not disclose the art medium used to create its colorful and inviting illustrations, the images are reminiscent of cartoons such as Doraemon and Ninja Hattori.
This book features a young Sikh boy as the main character; in the first page Billu is shown with his hair down, then in a top knot, before being tied up in a Patka for the remainder of the book. This is an engaging book for readers in grades K-3 or ages 5-7. While there are some textual details that a UK audience would be used to, the book remains suitable for a US audience as well.

Thank you Netgalley!
This book was so cute! I loved how the mom validated Billu and told him that he is fine even when his buttons are mismatched! I also love how the other kids were so nice to him and came dressed as him for his birthday!
This is a fantastic book!
I thought that this was a brilliant story about a wonderful little Sikh boy who is learning to dress himself.
My daughter is 7 now so we went through this when she was a little younger, and it did take a while to get those fiddly buttons on her school shirt sorted so we could really sympathise with how tricky it can be to get it right and we did have more than a few misaligned shirts.
I liked the main character and his personality - he is confident enough to know that whilst he might not look perfect, he is fine with the way he looks - and that is a really important message to get across to children at any age and I loved that the other children in his class were also inspired with him and started to dress in their own way too.
The book is very well written and easy to follow with some brilliant illustrations.
It is 5 stars from me for this one - very highly recommended - a fab addition to any school library!
I'm not going to lie - I teared up reading the author's note at the end of this book. The illustrations are fun and Billu's classmates are a diverse group, so many children will get to see bits of themselves reflected on the pages of this story. I love the message about confidence and growth mindset - that's it's ok if something isn't perfect. You try and try again, and you learn. It's a wonderful children's book!
I adored this book, it was very refreshing and has a positive message for people of all ages . Being able to have self confidence, love, patience with one's self and appreciation for who you are despite what others may view as “imperfections “ is so important to instill in young children . I would recommended this book to young kids.
Such a cute book with a very important message!
The drawings were adorable. It's amazing for kids since it gives an important message about acceptance.
