The city of Zurich is affluent and safe, dominated by its lake and the mountains, the city is ordered. For Rosa Zambrano, a choice to become part of the water police as a change from being involved in serious crime. However the discovery of a body in the lake hits home, he is Rosa’s doctor. When it becomes clear that Dr Jansen is involved with both a genetic start-up and a radical protest group, the list of suspects widens.
I really liked the fact that this book was set in Switzerland, that’s a novelty and it worked well with the tone of the book. It’s a very ordered and considered story but, for me, I found it rather dull. I don’t understand why, it had all the elements to really engage me – unusual murder and a plot around genetic research – but I found myself plodding through the prose.
I really struggled with this one and Im not sure if its down to it being a translated copy. I found the mystery was not very interesting and the medical information on fertility was too much and just slowed down the story, Descriptions of the settings and food was the best part of the book for me. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I found this story hard to follow, not helped by words with missing consonants.
The setup was intriguing, set in Zurich, but it just became too difficult to read. Words like coee instead of coffee kept stopping me in my tracks.
Apparently Rosa Zambramo, a police o’icer had some of her eggs frozen and less than 24 hours later the doctor who’d performed the procedure was found drowned in the water. An exciting premise but I was stymied by those missing ‘ff’ s and the occasional lead sentences.
Rosa is a police officer responsible for Lake Zurich. She's also been treated for infertility by the physician who has just been pulled from its depths. Who among his patients was angry enough to kill him? Keep in mind that this is said to be the first in a series so it's a set up- you'll get to know Rosa, her family, food, and so on. The mystery is less engaging. Thanks to the publisher for the ARC. A lot of potential for the future.
I received this book from NetGalley as an ARC.
I couldn’t get into it. I tried, I really did, but I just could not get into it or attend to the story, I kept turning pages without remember what I had just read, and at one point had to go back several pages to reread a whole section because I was completely lost. I’m not sure if it is because I’m reading an unedited, translated version or what, but a lot of it unfortunately didn’t make sense, which sucks because I was really looking forward to reading it based on the synopsis provided!
Unfortunately this was not for me. I liked the descriptive writing style, but I found the story hard to embrace.
Thank you for the opportunity from NetGalley and the publisher.
I enjoyed reading this book. Rosa is an interesting character, and the descriptions of Zurich and food are quite vivid. I look forward to reading the next installment. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4/ 5.
Thanks to NetGalley and Pushkin Press for letting me read an ARC of this novel.
Thank you NetGalley and Pushkin Press for the eARC.
It's difficult to review this book: I loved the descriptions of Zurich (I visited the city years ago, so lovely) and Rosa and her culinary knowhow. But the murder mystery itself didn't interest me, nor did I understand the medical aspect, I felt lost. The story was hard to follow too. But it was nice to revisit Zurich.
I got to read and review this book recently. It’s based in Switzerland. I don’t know if the translation caused a bit of a barrier or if it just wasn’t for me. It took a while for me to get into the book. Once in it did get somewhat interesting, but just not enough. If I wasn’t reviewing it I don’t know if I would honestly have finished it.
Since it did top a bunch of Swiss lists I’m gonna assume a lot of other people really enjoyed it, it just wasn’t for me.
The story line talks a lot about infertility and genetics and was honestly just over my head.
I did enjoy some of the characters and really liked Rosa.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review.
This is the first book in a new series by Seraina Kobler. Rosa Zambrona is the first female officer with the Lake Zurich maritime police. Formerly a CID officer, her training is helpful in solving this complicated case.
Rosa and her partner are called out to an abandoned yacht. A search of the water turns up nothing. A day later, the body of fertility doctor, Dr. Jansen is recovered from the nets of a local fisherman. An identification is quickly made as Rosa has actually just seen Dr. Jansen as a patient. The investigation leads them from fertility clinic to genetic research lab to a thriving sex trade operation.
I really enjoyed the twists and turns of this book. It's a little slow at points but more because we are being introduced to Rosa and her life outside her work. I look forward to the next book in this series. Thank you to the publishers, NetGalley and the author for the eARC of this book in return for my honest review. 4 out of 5 stars.
I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.
2.5* rounded down. I never really warmed to this novel featuring maritime (even though she worked on a lake...?) police officer Rosa. The Zurich setting wasn't as strong as I had hoped it would be and I didn't get much of a feel for the 'maritime' police work either - Sharon Bolton's novels where Lacey works for the Thames River police has a much better sense of place.
Rosa is involved in the investigation into the death of a fertility doctor who has recently been treating her (she does disclose this). I found all the women this doctor had been involved with and the timeline of his last day confusing and I didn't really like him enough to be that bothered who had killed him. There was a fair amount of detail about all the meals Rosa cooked and her relationships with her family, which slowed things down.
Not sure I'd recommend this one.
I really enjoyed this modern thriller! The storyline was good, the pacing was well done, and I thoroughly enjoyed the multiple characters we met throughout the book. I think the overall execution was good! The author did a great job at writing vividly and making it play out like a movie in my mind while reading!
Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers, and especially the author for this ARC in exchange for my honest review of the book!!
