Further adventures of Johnnie and Eleanor Shaux find them in the thick of the huge buildup to D-Day. As the German regime sends buzzbombs and V2 rockets over England, the poorly designed Operation Market Garden sends Eleanor to her superiors to change the operation to no avail. Johnnie finds himself learning about the new jet fighters as the Battle of the Bulge looms over Europe. Well written historical fiction.
I think this is my favorite book in the series, although the ending had me screaming. The author has the ability to shock me with the ending and screaming for more. I screamed the loudest this time.
Dangers and Difficulties is one challenging battle after another. Instead of quick summaries that a lot of books give, life on the battlefield was detailed. The decision making process was very detailed. The story was a reminder that even in times of war some put their own interests first, wanting to be remembered the hero.
By following Johnnie's adventures; the reader flies dangerous missions. I experienced fear that I am not sure he ever did. I was exposed to the challenges of pilots and those that support them. His actions seemed so real. There were many times I was glad I was reading a book instead of experiencing all that he endoured. When Johnnie has a mission that lands him on the beaches on D Day I was in awe. The tears flowed nonstop. The horrors of war brought to life by John Rhodes.
As Johnnie flies over Europe, his wife, Eleanor was plotting, planning and polictizing. There were so many different personalities that she had to deal with as a lowly woman that was more brilliant than most in the room. Through her eyes I saw the challenges she faced. So many lives in her hands as she tried to appease the men in the room.
Danger and Difficulties is a work of fiction, but it felt so real. It stirred up so many emotions. I gained understanding for relatives that were there but refused to talk about it. The author gave me so much information to be able to research and learn more. We all need to learn more so we don't repeat it.
This was a really well done historical fiction novel, it had that feel that I was looking for from the description. It uses the World War 2 element and thought it had that war element that I was looking for. The characters felt like they were supposed to in this world and glad it was so well written. John Rhodes has a great writing style and am excited for more.
