Two sisters spend the day together and nothing goes as planned. First it's so hot that the ice cream in the ice cream cone melts away and the seats heat up so much that you can hardly sit down and then suddenly: rain. But what a downpour!
Everyone seeks shelter indoors, large puddles quickly form on the streets as cars race through them and the two sisters are soaking wet.

Where to now? There's already a long queue of people outside the dinosaur exhibition, the library is closed and their stomachs are rumbling.

And so the two of them make their way home and discover the most wonderful adventure. Jumping into puddles of rain together, launching a paper boat, seeing a shooting star in the dark evening sky.

And even if the day was completely different than planned. It was better than all expectations.

The illustrations are painted in glowing shades of red and pink during the hot summer day and fade into a deep blue. The mixed media of water-based paints and colored pencil are full of small details and textures. The use of perspective distortion is particularly exciting.

A book about siblings, adventure and security.

Very cute illustrations and a heartfelt story about spending time with ones siblings. I really loved the bilingual aspect, the layout was clear and easy to follow. I found the English clear and at times quite witty. Lovely read and nice interaction from the author!

Thank you Netgalley and NorthSouth Books for this electronic ARC of " Hermanas, llueva o truena/ Sisters, Rain or Shine" by Nelly Buchet.

This is a sweet story of 2 sisters (a big sister and a little sister) and their day together that doesn't end up going the way it was planned. This is a great book for sisters to read together and I really liked that it had the text in English and in Spanish so it is perfect for families that speak both languages or for kids who are learning either language. The illustrations are really pretty too. Definitely worth checking out!

Charming story of two sisters who set off to spend the day together. Sadly, nothing goes as planned - melted ice cream, rain, closed library, and the two have to figure out new ways to have fun together. The artwork captures the character emotions and the activity happening around them. The message of just being together comes through along with the love they have for each other.

Like this story, nice relationship, and realistic. Helpful to talk about dealing with disappointment. Also appreciate that the book is truly bilingual, equivalent Spanish/English.

I loved this book. Hermanas, llueva or truene/Sisters, Rain or Shine follows a simple storyline of two unnamed sisters as they spend their day in the city. Even though a drastic change in weather changes the girls' plans, they are still able to spend a wonderful day in each other's company.

As an elementary teacher who speaks both Spanish and English, I love the simplicity of this story in both vocabulary and content. The words in the book are simple, encouraging young readers to read the words themselves because they are better able to decode sound out the words. On the content end, the story is able to carry the reader through the book, but the true content comes from the pictures. While the words are simple, the illustrations of the story are elaborate and encourage conversation among readers. For example, one page mentions how the characters had no where to go, and the illustrations show the main characters standing on a sidewalk in front of an apartment building where others are enjoying the dry warmth in various ways. Readers can expand their comprehension of the storyline by discussing how our characters are stuck in the rain and how it contrasts to the individuals int he building.

I applaud the translator on their ability to recreate the story in Spanish without minimizing the quality and simplicity of the words and storyline. While the original English story is simple and "blank" enough for children to put themselves in the story, the translator did a wonderful job of keeping the Spanish vocabulary just as simple and open to encourage Spanish-dominant readers to do the same.

If I could provide one suggestions, it would be to increase the size of the words on the page. It may have been my ebook copy, but I felt that the words were too small, and that the layout of the book provides enough space for a larger font without taking away from the illustrations.

Overall, this is a wonderful read for young students who are learning to read and decode both words and pictures, regardless of language dominance. I would like to thank the NetGalley and Ediciones NorteSur for providing me with this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This is what I wrote regarding this under its original title, and little has changed in the interim to alter my thoughts:-

Oh dear. Nothing plot, and just dreadful artwork – this one was a hard pass from me. I can't even begin to describe what doesn't happen and why it's so bad.

Thank you to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books Inc. for the e-ARC of this title to read and review. I loved the bilingual storytelling featured, along with the truly universal story of unexpected changes of plans! It can be hard to roll with sudden changes -- especially for kids who were looking forward to something very specific -- but as this story shows, adventures can be found anywhere! Good for early learning vocabulary level for kids who are learning English, Spanish, or both simultaneously.

Excellent for students learning English as a second language.

This was really cute with short sentences in both English and Spanish. Great for a beginning learner or early reader. Shows a very realistic day with a sister, with unexpected weather and changes of plans.

I received an advance review copy for free from the publisher via Netgalley and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is the cutest!
Two sisters plan a day out together. However, things do not turn out as they planned but yes, as long as you have your older sister things can get really fun and enjoyable even when it’s home!

I love the bilingual version and the illustrations are really amazing!

Totally recommended!

Thank you, NorthSouth Books Inc., for the ARC.
