This is a short and sweet bilingual book about two sisters who have a day which has a change in course due to the rain. It teaches that things don’t always go our way, but that is ok.

Hermanas, llueva o truene/ Sisters, Rain or Shine is a picture book about sisterhood. The sweet sisters had great plans ruined by the rain and thunder and lightning which suddenly appeared. Even with the rain, there were still many people outdoors, creating long lines for all the things they'd hoped to achieve. I loved the illustrations about their time in the city as they attempted to return home in such blustery conditions. I love the colors and the environments created by the illustrator. My only issue with the title is that the Spanish part is incorrect. Hermanas, llueva o truene translates to Sisters, Rain or Thunder instead of "shine." Otherwise, it would read best as Hermanas, llueva o brilla. But there's a lovely meaning to llueva o truene, which is, no matter the rain that falls or the thunderous claps, they are close knit and protective of each other.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I love the bilingual verses in the book and the illustrations to help young learners understand. This is a great book for children learning a language or for teachers to have in their classrooms for all learners. I really enjoyed reading this book about two sisters and would highly recommend this easy read to young learners.

Excellent book about sisters having fun and making the best out of every day, finding the good beyond a bad day and talking resilience with my kids.

3.5 ☆

A heartwarming tale of sisterhood and unexpected joy.
"Hermanas, llueva o truene" / "Sisters, Rain or Shine" is a charming story that beautifully captures the essence of sisterhood. The book follows two sisters with a significant age gap as they share ‘girl time’ bonding. The story emphasizes the importance of cherishing every moment, even when plans don't go as expected. It teaches children the valuable lesson of finding joy in unexpected circumstances and creating meaningful memories.
The illustrations are vibrant and engaging, perfectly complementing the narrative. They effectively convey the emotions and experiences of the characters, adding depth and richness to the story.
"Hermanas, llueva o truene" is a heartwarming and insightful read that will resonate with children and adults alike. It is a wonderful addition to any child's bookshelf, promoting resilience, and the joy of sisterhood.

This charming bilingual picture book follows a young girl and her older sister on a hot, then rainy day out. Kids will discover the value of flexibility and resilience as they read about the sisters' plans -- and what ends up happening instead. The characters are not named, which I appreciated as a narrative choice: reading it, I was able to imagine myself as the older girl, zipping my own little sister around town in the way we used to as kids. So cute!
With vibrant illustrations and short, catchy parallel text in Spanish & English (& the Spanish text is centered!), it's a good choice for a Family or Weather storytime. I'm excited to share this with the families who attend my Spanish/English storytime.

Thank you to North South books and NetGalley for the eARC and the opportunity to review the Spanish-language version of Sisters, Rain or Shine. I previously read and reviewed the original version in English. I was also fortunate to receive a physical copy for review from the publisher. The illustrations vary in persepective. At times, the lens seems far away, and the characters are surrounded by the people of the city. Other times the illustrator zooms in on the little girl and her sister. Together, they take on the city, even when plans get rained out. The comfort of spending time with a sibling is something that young readers will relate to, and the sweet story will spark connections with anyone who has spent a day running errands.
The difference in this version of Sisters Rain or Shine is that it is bilingual, and the Spanish language is centered, with English words written below. This would be a great option to have in a bilingual classroom or school library.

Thanks to Netgalley for giving me an advanced digital copy of this book. I loved the illustrations, those were really well done and added to the story. It was fun and I loved that it ended on a positive note, despite their plans not working out.

As an adult learning Spanish, I thoroughly enjoyed Hermanas, llueva o truene. As a city dweller, I found the story both relatable and charming. My daughter also appreciated it when we read it together in English. We were both drawn to the book by its beautiful illustrations, which bring the story to life.
I received an ARC.

This story beautifully translated a child's experience of having plans changed. I enjoyed the many small details in the illustrations that provide the book with a great reread experience. The book also takes place in NYC and is just so relatable.

I really liked this book, specifically because as a sister who has a larger age gap with my older sister, every moment was precious and meaningful to me to have with her as a child. Even when it didn’t go as planned. Stories about tempering disappointment and finding new ways to experience joy and form memories are important, and something like this feels very beautiful and aligned with that idea in mind. The art style was lovely, and I really did find this story precious.

Loved this depiction of the relationship between sisters and the assertion that they can have fun together no matter what! Illustrations are very cute and inclusive. The big selling point for this book though is the fact that each page is bilingual. Whether you have a Spanish-speaking child that you wish to remind of the English-story equivalents or an English-speaking child you want to introduce to Spanish, given the set up…kids will pick up on this so quickly! I can imagine my little one having all of the English and Spanish memorized before I can even wrap my brains around the pronunciations! Great idea!

Thank you to NetGalley, NorthSouth Books Inc., Ediciones NorteSur, Nelly Buchet, Rachel Katstaller (illustrator), and Mariana Llanos (translator) for the opportunity to read "Hermanas, Llueva o Truene" in exchange for an honest review.
"Hermanas, Llueve o Truene" or "Sisters, Rain or Shine" is a bi lingual children's picture book. It offers descriptive language in various tenses that a child learning English or Spanish would want to know to describe their day (especially if it started to rain! Rain is always fun!).
I thought the art was a cute blended style and the use of two languages helps learners with vocabulary and grammar. This book explores a sisterly bond and the specialness of sharing days together.
Highly recommend for parents and pre-school classrooms!

Due to torrential rain, one plan after the other goes by the wayside. But does it matter? Not if you’re hanging with your big sister! I really enjoyed this picture book, with optimistic words by Nelly Buchet and cheery illustrations by Rachel Katstaller. What a wonderful gift for little sisters everywhere.
In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley and NorthSouth Books Inc. in exchange for an honest review.

A great bilingual children's book in Spanish and English about the sisterly bond. Loved the illustration style!

This is a simple kid’s book. Two sisters make plans for the day, but they get rained out. They make a new set of plans, but those aren’t possible. The day is not what it’s supposed to be, but it turns out to be perfect because the two sisters are together. This book is sweet and typical. The illustrations have a childlike feel that go well with the narrator of the story.

Two sisters spend the day together and nothing goes as planned. First it's so hot that the ice cream in the ice cream cone melts away and the seats heat up so much that you can hardly sit down and then suddenly: rain. But what a downpour!
Everyone seeks shelter indoors, large puddles quickly form on the streets as cars race through them and the two sisters are soaking wet.
Where to now? There's already a long queue of people outside the dinosaur exhibition, the library is closed and their stomachs are rumbling.
And so the two of them make their way home and discover the most wonderful adventure. Jumping into puddles of rain together, launching a paper boat, seeing a shooting star in the dark evening sky.
And even if the day was completely different than planned. It was better than all expectations.
The illustrations are painted in glowing shades of red and pink during the hot summer day and fade into a deep blue. The mixed media of water-based paints and colored pencil are full of small details and textures. The use of perspective distortion is particularly exciting.
A book about siblings, adventure and security.

Very cute illustrations and a heartfelt story about spending time with ones siblings. I really loved the bilingual aspect, the layout was clear and easy to follow. I found the English clear and at times quite witty. Lovely read and nice interaction from the author!
