✨BOOK REVIEW✨

Any Trope But You by Victoria Lavine

HOW IN THE WORLD IS THIS A DEBUT?! The writing was superb and cozy and allowed for me to just sink into the story right away. Margot is a popular romance author who writes HEA’s but doesn’t actually believe in them. When her “alternate endings aka Happily Never After’s” file gets leaked, Margot gets cancelled and her career spirals. Margot is also a caregiver for her chronically ill sister, Savannah, and they share such a sweet bond. Savannah surprises Margot with a 6-week Alaskan getaway so she can be off the grid and away from the gigantic dumpster fire that is her career.

In Alaska, she meets Forrest who is running his family’s resort while also taking care of his dad after he had a bad accident. Let me just tell you, I loveeeee a grumpy man and Forrest DELIVERED. The snarky banter, the tension, and the multiple POV set this slow burn up so nicely. I loved the nod to the title — Margot is an expert in writing different “tropes” so the last thing she expects is to meet a guy who encompasses all of them. Definitely one of my favorite romances of the year and I already can’t wait to re-read. The push and pull between Margot and Forrest was chef’s kiss.

Read if you love:
-enemies to lovers
-snowy Alaskan setting
-romance writer FMC
-snowed in/forced proximity/one bed
-the swooniest ending
-heavy theme around sisterhood, caretaking and family relationships, and self-discovery (added SO much depth to the storyline)

All the stars! Out April 1st, huge thank you to Netgalley and Atria Books — all thoughts are my own!

I ADORED this book!

If you like rom-coms but with heart and emotion, this is for you!

This story follows Margot, a romance author who writes all her books with Happily Ever Afters (HEA). She is also a caretaker to her chronically ill sister, Savannah. Margot is quite jaded due to her past relationships, so she keeps a file on her computer with Happily NEVER Afters - alternate endings to her novels because HEAs don't actually happen in real life, right?

When her secret file is leaked to her fans and publisher, therefore her reputation as an author is ruined, her sister sends her on a 6 week trip to Alaska. She takes this opportunity to get away, have adventures, and possibly write a different genre than her previously planned romance.

Upon arriving at the remote Alaskan resort, she meets Forrest, a doctor who left his job in LA to help run his family's resort while also providing care for his father. Margot experiences trope after trope after trope. Things seem too good to be true, but Margot and Forrest have more in common than they first realize. Margot starts to question if HEAs are actually possible.

This story was witty and fun while also tugging at the heart strings.

Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for the ARC in exchange of my honest review.

Cute book about a romance author who accidentally destroys her career and is forced by her sister to take a trip to the Alaskan wilderness to reset and find herself. While there, she meets a handsome doctor who is taking care of his dad. And then sparks fly!

This was a fun read. I loved the character development and flow of the story. At times, it was too predictable and trope-y filled with expected cliches.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

If you’re looking for a romance with a twist, this one’s for you!

Margot Bradley, a romance author who doesn’t believe in Happily Ever Afters, secretly writes breakup endings for her own characters—until her “Happily Never After” files leak and her fans cancel her! Desperate to support her sick sister, Margot escapes to an Alaskan resort to write her first murder mystery. But fate throws her right into the arms of Dr. Forrest Wakefield, who’s back in town to care for his ailing father and is definitely not in the market for love.

With a title that hooks you instantly, this book was a fantastic, fun read!

It’s got all my favorite tropes, a perfect mix of humor and heart, and the touching family moments add just the right amount of depth.

Highly recommend this one for a cozy escape!

Thank you NetGalley and Atria Books for this ARC!

I loved this book. Margot is a romance author who is derailed by a hacker who reveals that she doesn’t actually believe in happily ever afters. Being a pessimistic person myself, I don’t blame her. Her sister, who is chronically ill, sends her to Alaska for a break and inspiration. However, Margot has to participate in the great outdoors every week to push herself and to receive a new letter from her sister, since there is no wifi at this lodge. Forrest, son of the owner of said lodge, starts to check off trope boxes that are typically in most romance novels. Each having their won family member to worry about, they understand each other but also can’t stop thinking about each other.

Highly recommend if you’re looking for a cute book that still tackles forms of reality.

I received an eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was my first time reading Victoria Lavine and 1) I will definitely be looking out for any other works 2) I can tell the author is a swiftie, which just took this read from a solid 5 stars 🌟 to a 5 stars plus 🌟 rating (if possible, or I guess a 6 out of 5 stars). I thought the initial concept was different which drew me in. I just loved the entire plot, which in turn, made me love the characters and their dynamics from the start. There was this essence of forbidden territory but also impossibly romantic scenarios that kept me turning the page. Additionally, the humor sprinkled in between each paragraph had me highlight like I’ve never done before. I felt like I got every aspect of a good romance book, without anything feeling overdone. It was the right about tropes, the right amount of tension, etc. In conclusion, I really enjoy this book and could see myself rereading it. Thank you to the author and publisher for the opportunity to review an e-ARC.

Thank you to Atria Books and NetGalley for sending me this early copy ARC of "Any Trope But You" in exchange for my honest review.

If you like romance, you will LOVE this book!! It's a classic, quick and easy, romance read! It has so many of my favorite tropes 😍. Obviously, based on the book summary, it includes A LOT of tropes and I had so much fun trying to predict them as they were/before they were revealed in the novel! It's like a scavenger hunt for romance junkies 😘!!

Also, this one definitely had some spicy scenes 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (🔥😉) - so if that's your thing, you will enjoy this one!! If not, I found they were predictable and therefore easy to skim/skip without losing any plot points!

I'm not going to lie, at first, Margot the FMC, was not my favorite (but she IS relatable), yet as the MMC, Forrest, grew in his admiration of her, so did I! In the end, I really liked her and respected the journey she was on. I appreciate when authors can create that sort of growth in characters for me through a book because it feels similar to real life in how you typically grow in empathy the more you get to know someone.

I loved the details revolving around being a caretaker for someone you love. It's a massive challenge and it definitely can trap you out limit you and it just adds a complexity to life that non-caretakers don't understand. Yet, because you love the one you care for, you obviously do what must be done and wouldn't change a thing!! All that to say, I appreciated the reflections and tensions portrayed in the novel of this reality.

Finally, as someone with an autoimmune disease that is under-researched and often dismissed and difficult to alleviate, I thought it was AWESOME that this was represented in the book through the FMC's sister. Thank you for bringing some awareness to ailments that so many people suffer from and seek to manage!

The sister relationship in this book was very sweet and touching, I adored their friendship and love for one another 🥹🫶🏼!! I also loved the father/son dynamic ❤️.

Absolutely loved this one!!! Margot is a rom com
Writer who specialises in HEA’s (happily ever afters) when her fans discover she is actually a cynic and has alternate endings that do not end happily they cancel her. Her sister sends her away to Alaska to write a new book and discover herself. When she arrives in the middle of nowhere with no wifi she is determined to make the most of this trip. Upon her arrival she meets Forrest who she unexpectedly falls for along the way. It was super cute and cheesy but in the best way!

**Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)**

*Any Trope but You* by Victoria Lavine is a delightful, trope-filled romance that hits all the right notes for fans of witty banter and sweet, slow-burn relationships. The story follows two well-developed protagonists who challenge each other, both in their personal growth and romantic chemistry. Lavine's writing is sharp, playful, and filled with humor, which keeps the story engaging from start to finish.

The plot is a refreshing twist on common romance tropes, offering enough originality to stand out while still delivering on the familiar beats that readers of the genre crave. The main couple's dynamic is heartwarming, though there are a few moments where the pacing drags, particularly towards the middle of the book.

Overall, *Any Trope but You* is an enjoyable read that balances humor and heartfelt moments well, with a satisfying conclusion that will leave you smiling. Definitely recommend for fans of contemporary romance with a bit of cheeky charm.

This debut novel from Victoria Lavine was such a delightful surprise! It’s the perfect love letter to romance readers everywhere! It’s full of heart, adventure and some really great laugh out loud moments.

Jaded by love, author, Margot Bradley has just landed herself in some hot water when her Happy Never After file is leaked to her readers. The file where all her happy endings get their alternate, no so great ending. Now canceled, her sister convinces her this is the perfect time to reinvent herself and write her next novel in a new genre in peace. That’s how she finds herself at a remote Alaskan lodge, clinging to a man in flannel with a moose behind her. Almost immediately all the romance tropes she writes in her books are happening to her in real life. She’s definitely not looking for love. But as she learns more and more about Forrest she’s finding that good men actually exist and he may just be worthy. And, just maybe happy endings really can happen.

I love that this story touches on chronic health issues and the role their caregivers have to play. It’s not easy on both sides. The sacrifices and feelings of being a burden. Margot and Forrest found empathy with each other as they both knew that role well and all they gave up for those they loved. I could totally relate to all the weight you carry being a care giver.

Thank you NetGalley, Atria Books, and Victoria Lavine for allowing me to read an advanced complimentary copy of the book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This was such a delightful read! I loved the setting and the overall writing of the book. There was a lot of relaxed creative liberties I think the author took in her approach to writing this book and it really worked. This book was full of love, family, and lots of hope. Trapper and Savannah were so lovely to read and I love any story that can take a cynic and make them romantic again. I am a sucker for those books.

I loved the focus on caretakers and how at times it can feel very lonely taking care of family members. This was such a nice touch to have in the book. Will be recommending to friends for sure!

I loved these characters and this story so much! The writing drew me in from page one and I was both laughing and crying in the first chapter. This book had just the right amount of emotional depth for a rom-com. I empathized a lot for the characters and felt they had satisfying emotional journeys, while not being too heavy.

•Hurt/Care
•One Tent
•Sauna Scene
•Open Door Spice
•Dual POV (1st Person)

I highly recommend this book!

I could not get enough of this book! It had me giggling and gave me all the feels. A book that centers around all our favorite tropes as romance readers was so fun to read. Margot is a romance author who is famous for writing amazing romance books that end with happily ever afters. Little does her readers know that she doesn't believe in happily ever after. Her past heartbreaks have jaded her that she believes in happily never afters. Once her secret is out, her readers turn on her and she is left to figure out how she is to pick herself back up and reinvent herself ala Taylor Swift. She ends up in Alaska where she looks to escape and perhaps write a new book in a different genre hoping this will help her get back out there. Little does she expect to find a gorgeous man who embodies all the characteristics she writers of her fictional men in her books. And soon she finds herself engaging in all the romantic tropes that she writes about that just may change her mind about happily ever afters.

A romance author's jaded true views come to light after a hacker releases her Happily Never After file to the public. She escapes to a remote Alaskan retreat, where she meets a handsome staff member that is taking care of his father. Can she move past her previous relationships to start a new one?

I really liked Any Trope but You. It made me laugh out loud and cry and feel all the feelings. The characters were well written and believable. The plot was great. Five stars! I hope to read more from this author in the future.

This book was really cute! It had the coziest, cutest vibes set in a remote Alaskan resort with a dreamy MMC & all of the romcom tropes that you want! I do think it could have been edited down a little bit - some parts felt very long and unnecessary for the overall storyline. I think it could have just used some more tweaking and condensing.
Overall though, it was so cute & fun. I laughed out loud & wanted to cry a few times, too. I loved the relationship between Savannah and Margot, as well as with Forrest and his dad. I thought that Victoria did a great job of encompassing grief and navigating the world after it, as well as the ideas of never finding true love. I loved the use of all the tropes and the way that the author even made fun of them! It felt genuine and exciting and new.
Thank you NetGalley, the publishers & Victoria Lavine for my copy. An author to be on the lookout for!

Fun romance story with a unique character perspective. This book does have a fair amount of spice so make sure you are open to that or willing to skip it (simple skips will not take away from the story). This is a great debut author. Romance girls will see this as a new must read author.

3 stars
Spicy!

Any Trope But You is a dual-perspective novel about two people deciding between their own needs and their dedication to supporting their most-loved ones. Margot is a fallen-from-grace romance writer sent to reinvent herself in Alaska by her beloved sister/best friend. Forrest is a research Dr, back at his family business to watch over his recovering father. They hate each other for no good reason, until they don't.

This book wasn't my favorite. A few things gave me the ick and I almost DNF'd several times. When Margot blew off Forrest's opinion on his father's health because he was 'just a groundskeeper' (she'd literally just met him). Her opinion and attraction for him changed dramatically when she found out he was a Dr... ew. Also, I know the titled warned me about the tropes, but wow, every single one is crammed in here!! It got overwhelming. The miscommunication trope was totally hypocritical. Margot herself had the digital world turn their back on her and she blindly believes a blog post from a stranger, even doubting her own experience because of it?! It was too much.

If you made it through all that and aren't turned off, I'll say that the Alaska of it was lovely. The lodge, the excursions, some of the supporting characters were very nicely built. The character growth was nice in the end, though the challenge they made for themselves feels a bit like a lose-lose. I wish we'd gotten an epilogue, but considering the context,, it makes 100% sense that we didn't.

Thanks to NetGalley and Atria Books for this eARC.

I did not go into this book, expecting it to be as meaningful and heartfelt as it was. Any book with a sister relationship at the forefront will grip me and make me fall for the characters even more, and this sister relationship was no exception. Margot and Forest were main characters that felt like they would last beyond the page, and I know that was the point of this book and it was fully met. The happy ever after was not the end it was the beginning and I have no doubt that they will have a beautiful life together in my imagination. It was the perfect ending and Alaska was such a beautiful setting for this to unfold. Easily 4 1/2 stars.
