Sisters Making Mischief by Maddie Please
Despite Joy's hard work and amazing preparations, Christmas turns out to be rather disappointing when her daughter Sara arrives with her two daughters and announces she's getting divorced, and her son John reveals he's moving to New York with his wife and two daughters. Joy goes to stay with her sister Isabel in France and whilst there she works out what she wants from the rest of her life now that she's divorced and her adult children are getting on with their own lives.
Oh I loved this book so much - how fabulous to read about older characters, and especially when they're having fun and living life to the full! I loved the setting in France, the romantic interest, the relationship between sisters Joy and Isabel... and I had a soft spot for Isabel's mother in law too, who I imagined like a French Maggie Smith! Very VERY highly recommended.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC of this book.
Sisters Making Mischief by Maddie Please is a delightful and heartwarming read that captures the chaos and joy of sisterhood. Packed with humor, love, and relatable family dynamics, the story pulls you in with its fun twists and genuine moments. Maddie Please's writing shines with wit and warmth, making this a perfect pick for anyone looking for a light, feel-good escape.
Sisters Making Mischief by Maddie Please is the most charming contemporary novel that I thoroughly enjoyed.
I always enjoy novels by Maddie Please as she writes with warmth, welcome and wit. Sisters Making Mischief is like the sun appearing on a grey day, it cheers the reader from the start.
The reader, along with the main character, is transported from a tense Christmas in Britain to a carefree new year in France. The atmosphere and problems in England are in complete opposite to the carefree, fun atmosphere at her sisters in the French countryside. There is a new life, along with new possibilities awaiting.
The lead characters are in their sixties and there is a sprightly mother-in-law who is eighty four. They all show that life is for living whatever your age. It is glorious to see characters not in the first flush of youth enjoying and being invigorated by life.
Maddie Please injects much humor into her tale. With an accident prone lead character, I found myself literally laughing out loud throughout the story. There were some truly hilarious scenes.
A family has stunted the life of a character. She has been a wife, daughter and mother who has shouldered all their problems. Now, newly divorced, it is time to learn to live again.
I absolutely adored Sisters Making Mischief. It was a wonderfully warm and fun read, with wholesome characters who inject life and love into the reader’s day.
I will leave you with my favourite quote:
“Love starts with a feeling but continues as a choice.”
I received a free copy via Rachel’s Random Resources. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.
This book was so much fun! Going from England to France with great relatable characters and lots of humour. I was totally hooked from start to finish.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for an honest review.
This book was right up my street. There are parts of this story that I and am sure lots of women can completely relate to. A thoroughly enjoyable read, its funny, it's relatable and quite uplifting & feelgood. Heartily recommend this one.
France Bound..
With family falling apart around her, Joy decides to up and leave for France for a well deserved break from it all. Once there, she finds that life at her younger sisters farm is rather chaotic but it seems to succeed in bringing a bit of energy and fun into her life again. An uplifting and heartwarming tale with a well drawn cast of eclectic characters and a plot laced with humour.
Loved this story about Joy, who was preparing for her family to be home for Christmas . Her daughter and he family and her son and his family. Four grandchildren. Well, let's just say it wasn't going as planned and she was doing all the work. Mostly all they did was complain. I am not going to go into detail but after one family stayed and one left england for New York City Joy decided to go visit her sister in France. Read to see how that turned out. Joy, had to decide how she was going to live her life for herself and not everyone else. This book is A GREAT READ.
I only recently discovered this author and love how they write about real people and relatable issues and also add the element of humour in there too. The characters and storylines are engaging and love how the author writes about older people finding themselves on their own again and rediscovering themselves.
Loved the relationship between the sisters and the other characters and the setting of France was just perfect I would love a sequel to this to see how joys life continues to evolve.
I absolutely loved this story, it's lovely to know that older women can still have a life with family, friendships and a hilarious good time, this was an absolute triumph, thank you
An enjoyable light-hearted read. Joy is 'doing' Christmas for her son and daughter and their families. No one wants to help, everyone complains about something and they all bicker. Immediately after Christmas she visits her easy-going, chaotic sister in France. Once she relaxes she starts to review her life and plans for the future. There wasn't much mischief-making but it was amusing. As Christmas approaches, it is a salutary read. When the children say 'can we come to you for Christmas' do they mean we want to spend quality time together or you can do all the preparation and work?
An enjoyable, easy to read novel about a woman who travels to her sister to rediscover herself after some major changes in her life.
I felt Joy's pain at trying to make the perfect Christmas! It is not easy being the only one to organise everything. After Joy decided to just leave and stay with her sister, well I couldn't take the huge grin from my face. The sisters antics are fun and mischievous. It was like finding the shining star in the dark sky and I loved watching Joy find herself and her own Joy. Falling in love and doing things for no one but herself brought out the bright and bubbly side. Sisters Making Mischief is a very pleasant journey.
A great jolly read . Moves between England and France. The main character needs to get her life back on track. She is divorced and put her children first who are grown up. She goes to visit her sister in France. You get a love element and lots of fun french bits . Loved it

Joy wanted a nice family Christmas after struggling for the last 3 years to come to terms with the breakdown of her marriage after her controlling husband left for a younger woman. She had the perfect Christmas all planned out but it was anything but... Her daughter had just found out her husband had cheated and her son and his family was going to move to New York. It was a terrible Christmas where she did everything and her family complained.
Her sister Isabelle invites her to stay with her in France and tells her to let her daughter and her two girls stay at her house, whilst she joins them in France. Whilst she is there all the fun starts and Joy realises how controlling her ex was and how it is never too late to put yourself first.
This was a lovely book and it shows your never too old to start again, life is for living and don't sit around waiting to die (like Izzy's MIL).
I would recommend this book, as I enjoyed the pace of it, and it did make me laugh out loud many times, especially when the sisters are together
I really enjoyed this one. A really easy atmospheric read. Felt like I was in France! Loved it!!! Looking forward to reading more from this author. A huge thank you to the publisher and to Netgalley for this ARC.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this arc!!
What a good book! I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I loved the main characters! They had great chemistry and worked so well together. I loved how the book just flowed. My first by this author but will not be my last!!!
For the first tie since her divorce, Joy is hosting a family Christmas. However, the event is not the joyful event
she had hoped for. Her daughter has arrived a day early with her tow daughters and informs Joy that her husband is
having an affair. When her son arrives the following day, he informs Joy that he and his family are moving to New York.
As Sara plans on staying at the house for a time, Joy follows through with her plans to visit her sister Isabel
in France. Felix runs a bookstore while Isabel manages the cottages tthat are rented out as well as a barn filled
with odds and ends that are sold to tourists. As Joy becomes involved in helping Isabel and Felix with their
businesses, she rediscovers a joy for life. Delightful story.

This book is just brilliant. The opening chapters, with the comparisons of expectations and the realities of a family Christmas, are absolutely spot on! I felt great empathy with Joy, allowing herself to be put upon, and not standing up for herself. Seeing her develop after her divorce was a fun and enjoyable experience. The main part of the book takes place in France, and the use of French phrases adds to this. I highly recommend this book.
Joy was at a crossroad in life, and when she went to a lot of trouble to make a perfect Christmas for her grown children and grandchildren. It wasn't working out the way she planned, so she decided enough was enough. She packed some bags and went to France to visit her sister.
While there, she helped out, met new people, and discovered who she is now. She likes who she is now and is going to explore it and see what happens. I enjoyed reading about the things she discovered, the things she didn't see, but others did, and instead of trying to make everyone else feel better, maybe it was time to think about herself, and give to herself what no one else did. Oh, the things she did, discovered, and started to embrace the life she had, kept me reading.
I received an ARC from Boldwood Books through NetGalley.
Having sisters , it’s easier than it sounds ! But like our heroines I wouldn’t trade my sister for the world ! If you don’t have a sister(s) come gets taste of the pure insanity that is sisterhood !
