"On Her Watch" is a riveting dystopian romance set in 2071. Lieutenant Liz Grant goes AWOL to help rebels fight an oppressive government. Liz's mission is complicated by the magnetic Commander Linc Cutler as she infiltrates the Beta Corps army. Rie Warren's novel brilliantly intertwines action, political intrigue, and steamy romance, creating a fast-paced narrative with complex, relatable characters. This captivating read is perfect for fans of romantic suspense and dystopian fiction, who will be enthralled by the high-stakes world and the emotional journey of its protagonists.
Futuristic. Books are not normally my thing but this was well written and the story as well as the romance were good.
Many thanks to Forever Grand Central Publishing and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
ON HER WATCH - Rie Warren
#2 in the Don't Tell series
HOT! - 3 Stars
Plot - 3 stars - The time is the future, and the world has become so totally government controlled that they even make homosexual love punishable by death. When Liz Grant goes undercover in the CO to gain information, both for the revolutionaries as well as the truth about her father's death, she finds herself overwhelmingly attracted to the sexy second in command.
Writing - 3 stars - The writing was fine; the fault was my own in that I hadn't done my homework to determine what the book was about and not having read the first in the series to get the set-up. And she sure knows how to write a hot sexual scene, but enough already! Even as Linc and Liz are getting ready for battle, they have to take a break to have hot sex beforehand. It got a little old after a while.
Characters - 3 stars - Liz is a strong, confident character, but she also is pretty impetuous and flies off the handle easily. She's constantly writing down her thoughts, then having to destroy her notes, so I didn't quite understand why she risked it unless it was a method for the author to share information for the reader. Linc is a confusing character since he has followed the party line throughout his whole life, but now he suddenly seems as though he has switched sides and supports Liz in her rebellion, going so far as to gather troops for a revolution against his father. I got mixed messages from him. But the relationship between them is nice--very sexual, but seemingly sincere.
Title - 3.5 stars - The title implies that the main character is a soldier (which she is). The series name is significant (The "don't ask, don't tell" policy for the military) although I didn't figure that out until I started reading the book.
Cover - 3 stars - The abs are hot (if a little too typical for this genre), but the black/white cover didn't draw the eye at all.
Overall - 3 stars - Having not read the first in this series, it took me a while to get into the swing of this new-to-me world. Most of the action was sexual, although there were a few brutal battles as well. The book seemed to be all about control, which I didn't find appealing. Perhaps if I'd read the first in the series first, I would have enjoyed it more.
Liz is in the military and Linc is the son of a CEO. Sparks fly between them when they meet for the first time. They worked well together because they allowed each other to become a better version of themselves because of their relationship. However things are complicated because of the secret she has. Will this secret be what end things between them?
This is an amazing story that will captivate you from beginning to end. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.
I did not have a chance to read this book, but it is effecting my feedback rating. I am giving books 5 stars that I haven't read to improve my feedback rating. I am not recommending the book for my classroom or students since I have not read the book. There needs to be a better system of leaving feedback for books not read.
This futuristic dystopian is out of my norm, but I enjoyed it. Warren has an easy style and voice, which made the book readable. The flintiness between Liz and Linc was enjoyable, and I liked the backstories for these two characters.
I was unable to finish the book, but thank you for the opportunity.
Our apologies again that another book was never read and reviewed. If a review is done in the future, we will send a link.
