Gotta love when what starts out as a plan for getting revenge turns into something that might be better than the first time.

Jean loves the unexpected. She works in a hotel that prides itself on catering to customers' whims, especially those clients that rent out their more luxurious cottages. When Charlie calls the front desk asking for more towels, she is a little disappointed it's a standard call but is happy to find that Charlie is awkwardly charming. In the secluded cottage, they flirt their way through games and random snake facts. When Charlie disappears without a word, Jean teams up with a friend who is also interested in what he's hiding to infiltrate his family business's centennial celebration.

This is a follow up book but I did not read the first one and didn't feel like I was missing anything. It's an adorable story although I did feel like Charlie was incredibly immature. It worked in the story since his family seemed to keep him fairly sheltered. I loved Jean - her love of people being true to themselves, no matter how weird, was refreshing. There are several other quirky characters that brought a good amount of humor to the story. The story is told from the POVs of both Jean and Charlie. While the chapters aren't labeled, it's easy to figure out who is telling the story within the first sentence or two of the chapter.

The Odds of Getting Even, or what I like to call “Snakes on a Plain”, is a feast made from so many of my favorite things. Secret, if reluctant, famous person. Quirky, if misunderstood, love interest. A screwball comedy plot that rolls along, taking you for a wonderfully ridiculous ride from falling in lust at a tropical resort to seeking revenge in the wide-open plains of South Dakota. It’s sweet, and silly, and has a snake named Emma, who I promise is not too ssssslithery on page.

Being a science nerd at heart and having worked many (many) years ago with snakes, the opportunity to read a romance with a herpetologist MC really intrigued me, but it was the chemistry between Charlie and Jean that won me over. It’s so perfect and funny and leaves you cheering them on right through the final chapters.

This was so cute!! The banter was on point and Charlie was so sweet!! Jean could be a little bit annoying and the way she just jumped to conclusions about Charlie was frustrating, the miscommunication trope is not my favorite one. But this story did it in such a way that it wasn't as annoying lol. Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for my digital ARC!

This really leans into the COMEDY part of a Romcom, and I'm so here for it! It had a classic screwball comedy feel with an adorable, geeky, yet bumbling mmc and a fmc who is playful and has very little filter! The Odds of Getting Even was refreshing and fun to read. (Also, take note that there is no spice with closed door scenes).

Looking for your upcoming summer beach read? Look no further!

THE ODDS OF GETTING EVEN is yet another wonderful Romantic Comedy from Amanda Sellet. The novel is packed with punchy dialogue, realistic characters, and a screwball comedy plot geared to make you laugh, cry, and swoon. Jean and Charlie are the perfect leads for this stellar summer Rom-Com.

Fans of Sellet's first adult novel HATE TO FAKE IT TO YOU will find familiar faces in THE ODDS OF GETTING EVEN, but the two books can be read separately. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing a free eARC in exchange for a review.

While the beginning was lovely and quickly made me believe this was about to be a top romcom read for me, midway through the writing style completely switched and I was confused most the time on what was even going on. This is my first novel by this author so I’m not used to their writing style. I did love the beginning so I hope to read other works by this author because this just did not feel like their best work.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc!

This was only ok to me. The premise is cute and the plot had the makings of a fun romance romp. But I just could not connect with either main character through the writing. And, this only got worse as I read, not better, which is odd.

Thank you netgalley for a copy of this! Overall I thought the plot was a 3.75 but the characters were closer to a 3. I thought Charlie was funny and innocent but something about Jean just didn’t stick with me as much. A little bit of the plot was rushed but I think it evened out in the end and I enjoyed the ending. Overall vibes were good so 3.5

I had to DNF this one. I couldn’t stand Jean and I couldn’t force myself to get through it. I also felt like Charlie was just too much of I don’t even know what the word is, but I also couldn’t stand him. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this arc ebook in exchange for an honest review.

I think so far I’m the only reviewer who didn’t like this book. Honestly I’m quite confused with all the 5 star reviews and I feel like we all read a different book.

So The Odds of Getting Even follows Jean Harrington, a spunky resort employee, and Charlie, a shy scientist obsessed with snakes. They have a meet cute romance moment during a late night towel run. However, things end unexpectedly when Charlie bolts without an explanation leaving Jean on the quest for revenge.

I will admit the beginning I really enjoyed watching these two awkward and chaotic characters meet and interact was extremely fun and enjoyable. Their opposites-attract banter and chemistry was adorable. But then the book does a total 180 after Charlie’s drastic exit. The plot then moved super fast and all over the place. Because of this it got super confusing and I often had to go back and re-read what I just finished to make sure I actually grasped what was said. To top it off the writing became super boring and the characters I loved meeting from the beginning didn’t feel like the same people anymore. Which cause me to want to skim read.

Overall, The Odds of Getting Even is unfortunately not a book for me. So regrettably I cannot recommend. But even though it’s not for me maybe it will be meant for someone else.

Lastly big thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Griffin for providing me an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Amanda Sellet writes such sweet and endearing novels. The Odds of Getting Even was fun, and oh so swoony. I love the characters and their stark differences which is what brings them together. I love their wit and humor and the way the author continued to find ways to make them so endearing.

This book was a pleasant surprise.
I thoroughly enjoyed it, as it was a quick read and a good time.

The Odds of Getting Even was quirky and laugh out loud funny. All of the characters are almost too much. The book kicks off with the hilarious Jean bringing a stack of towels to the super awkward Charlie while is accidentally nude. The laughs only continue from there.

Charlie unexpectedly leaves Jean behind to go back to his family. She follows him to get him back and the hilarity ensues. He thinks she is playing a game by showing up as Eve but doesn't realize she is trying to make him pay for leaving her behind without a word.

This is my first book by Amanda Seller and I truly look forward to reading more.

“The Odds of Getting Even” is hilarious. The forthrightness and playfulness of Jean contrasted by the innocence of Charlie. The mistaken assumptions when Charlie’s identity is revealed. Jean’s efforts to get revenge on Charlie publicly at the family’s centennial celebration, complicated by other unexpected guests and more misunderstandings, including about which characters are romantically interested in each other.

The cover was so cute so it had so much promise. However the whole book was based on avoidable miscommunication. I DNF at 15%. The characters lacked depth and chemistry and I didn't care for the FMC anger and 'sexualized' encounter with the MMC. It was too odd.

The book was cute. I liked Jean and Charlie's unique characteristic's and interests, along with how the story was set up. Their meet cute was on POINT! As the story progressed the main characters felt young through their challenges and misunderstandings. I am not a huge fan of the "no communication"/"loss of communication" trope. I think it comes off high school-ey, which in turn made it feel unrealistic for these characters to act in these ways. I like the connections and underlying stories happening with the supporting characters, it made it interesting and fun to follow along with all the chaos of the sub plots. Overall, a nice light romance read.

The Odds of Getting Even by Amanda Sellet is a sweet and fun contemporary romance. The main characters have instant chemistry and are complete opposites and it totally works! Jean, the FMC, is smart, funny, and knows how to make the MMC blush. Charlie the MMC is so sweet, nerdy, and totally down bad for Jean. As a reader, you follow along as Charlie and Jean navigate their feelings for each other along with misunderstandings, hidden identities, and second chances.

This romance is filled with witty and fun banter from the start, which I absolutely adored!

This book is a fast paced and fun read. I loved the witty humor and the sweet connection between the two main characters, a true opposites attract rom-com.

Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

3.75 rounded to 4 ⭐️

While I am not a fan of snakes I was able to put aside my fear for this cute story line! Jean and Charlie meet in a not so typical fashion but it’s the way they meet that allows for the sweetest beginning of this love story. I love a good weirdos relationship where everyone accepts each other as they are. Just like any relationship, communication is key and these two are not the best at it. All their problems could’ve easily been solved with an honest conversation. They rectify it swiftly and we get the happily ever after we always want in a romance.

A funny and cute story. Misunderstandings are throughout the story causing confusion, hurt feelings, and revenge. Humorous and easy to read with quirky characters that draw each other out. Charlie is hiding from paparazzi; Jean brings him out to love and adventure.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of the book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
