I have heard a lot about LJ Andrews on booktok but this is the first time I've read one of her books and it won't be my last!
Broken Souls and Bones is an original take on Norse Mythology. In this world, the Gods gave to humans three kinds of magic: Bones, Blood and Soul. The FMC is different though, she is the first female melder to walk the earth of hundreds of years, and she's been in hiding because her power is very coveted by the King. He finds her though, and sends The Sentry to retrieve her.
This book is a very slow burn romantasy with 2 or 3 spicy scenes, it kept me entertained throughout and even thought I anticipated a few turns of events, 2 plot twits really surprised me! Beware, it ends on a cliffhanger.
Tropes you can look forward to:
- Forced Proximity
- Captor than Bodyguard
- Found / Chosen Family
- Virgin FMC
- Fated Mates
- Unique Magic System
- MMC would burn the world down
* Note that you will find a non-verbal main character and LGBTQ secondary characters in this novel.

"Broken Souls and Bones" is my first book by LJ Andrews, but it will not be my last. This book has me hooked in anticipation for Book 2. Lyra Bien has a secret, one hidden within the silver scars in her eyes. She possesses the rare and powerful magic of a 'melder', with the gift of all three crafts: Soul, Blood, and Bone. However, this gift is also a curse as the King of Stonegate seeks to use it for his own purposes and power. Captured by the King's sentry Roark, Lyra becomes the King's 'melder' and is forced to use her magic to her own detriment. As she tries to save her friends from the King, she finds an unlikely ally in Roark. But as their secrets begin to unravel, they face a horrifying choice: to fight for what know or surrender to the fate that binds them together. Beautifully written, this story captivates through the characters and all they must endure as they fight for those they love. I was engaged throughout the entire book, blown away by the ending, and left eagerly awaiting Book 2.
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

“Break me, I no longer care, as long as it is you who wields the destruction.”
Lyra never intended for anyone to find out her secret melding abilities. Until the day her tiny village has a visit from the royal Stav Gaurd with the infamously deadly and silent warrior Roark Ashwood in tow. She soon finds herself in a grave situation, being forced to reveal her powers. Now a prisoner Lyra embarks on a journey that will lead her to the crown King of Jorvandal to be his special weapon and melder against his enemies of Davenmoor. As Lyra enters this new unfamiliar world of royals, politics, and battles she surprisingly feels drawn to her enigmatic bodyguard and keeper Roark. But as secretes unravel and long told destinies loom Lyra realizes this path of magic, blood, bones, and shadows runs much deeper than she could have ever imagined.
This dual POV fantasy book was beyond addictive and I absolutely couldn’t put it down, finishing it in one day. The magic system of this world was truly like nothing I had ever read before with them being centered around bones, blood, and a persons soul. The way in which Andrews’ described and explained each of these rare crafting abilities was very intricate and well done, making the overall world building in this first installment extremely detailed, exciting, and immersive. Now these were definitely a bit darker style magics since they did involve bones and blood and the manipulation of them. Which honestly made perfect sense for this war tore Nordic Viking style fantasy world. The two battling kingdoms lead to many tense action filled battle scenes that are nicely balanced in the plot by also having a sweet found family aspect with amazing characters both main and side to love and root for. Speaking of characters our moody bodyguard and warrior MMC Roark and our fearless forbidden magic wielder FMC Lyra had the most deliciously slow push and pull burn that had me feral for the very moment it would all combust. I also have to commend Andrews for the phenomenal inclusion and writing that went into Roark’s use of hand speak (essential sign language) as he is non verbal due to an injury sustained in his youth. I could go on and on about everything I adored in this book, just simply know I’m fully obsessed and was left screaming for more by the end. Basically I can’t get enough of this new and exciting series and need the sequel immediately! If you are a fan of fantasy worlds filled with viking and Norse mythology influence, found family, warring kingdoms, secret identities, unique magic systems, slow burn spicy romance with all the touch her and die energy, and shocking twists then you absolutely have to read this amazing new fantasy read.
Broken Souls and Bones comes out April 29th, 2025. Thank you NetGalley and Berkley Publishing, Ace Pub for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This book was so promising and hooked me early. But it started to fall flat about 40% in. I felt like the progression slowed significantly and then pacing was an issue from that point on. Once I fell out of the story it was extremely difficult to get back into it. I felt like the information the woman in the market revealed about the ring should have been way earlier in the book because by the 60% mark, it made the rest of the story too predictable. It felt a little like being given an outline for the rest of the novel. I loved the tension between Roark and Lyla. Conceptually this story was really cool. I just felt like the pacing issues ruined it for me.

✨Broken Souls and Bones✨
I truly don’t think LJ can write a single thing I would dislike. Once again in a world of magic and Vikings, Andrews transports us into a land where magic is as beautiful as it is vicious.
In BSAB, the first in LJ’s new Stonegate series, we follow a dual first person POV. Our FMC Lyra has been hiding her identity her whole life due to the forbidden magic she holds. When she is found out, our silent and deadly MMC Roark, is given the position of bodyguard. Something that is both as exciting as it is dangerous.
Within the walls of Stonegate, Lyra finds herself lost in a new world of power, court intrigue, betrayals, bonds, found family, and forbidden love. Lyra is a phenomenal FMC, the perfect balance between strength and compassion. She is funny, feisty, and loves with her whole being. Roark is a delightful blend of rough, mysterious, and gentle. LJ did an amazing job with the sign language rep, maintaining intrigue, personality, uniqueness while creating a quiet book boyfriend I will love always. And the banter! 🫠🫠🫠
I am never disappointed when it comes to LJ, Vikings, and her romantasies. The world building and character development are always on point and this new series is no different! I am SO STOKED for what happens next.
Tropes you may find in BSAB are bodyguard, grumpy x sunshine, Vikings, unique magics, soul bonds, forced proximity, hidden identities, disability rep, slow burn, found family, forbidden love, betrayals, plot twists, 🔥 the world for her, touch her and ☠️, “breathe”, anxiety rep, medium spice, and wound tending/comfort.
ENORMOUS thank you to LJ, netgalley, and Berkeley pub. I am so humbled and honored to get to be an arc reader for LJ’s street team. 🫶

If you’re a fan of this authors previous tales you’ll be head over heels for this one! I enjoyed the growth this story had and the ability the author had to wiggle in important information without drifting far away from what was currently happening. Super enjoyed this book!

LJ Andrew's is a powerhouse in the romantasy genre! I loved both the plot and the characters in this book and can't wait for the next. I think about the cliffhanger every day. The romance was also so beautiful. It was the perfect mixture of angsty and tender. I can't wait to purchase a final copy for my shelf, and am eagerly awaiting an announcement for the sequel! Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this ARC <3

Broken Souls & Bones is a Norse-inspired fantasy filled with forbidden romance, dark magic, and slow-burning tension. The world is rich and immersive, with a unique magic system based on bones, blood, and the ability to see souls. It’s complex and intriguing but does require some patience to keep up with all the details.
The story follows Lyra, a sheltered young woman with a past full of secrets, and Roark, a cursed warrior whose brooding intensity speaks louder than words (literally tap, tap, tap - yes, he's mine lol). Their dynamic is full of tension, and while their romance is a slow burn, the touch her & die energy? Absolutely there.
I had mixed feelings about Lyra - her stubbornness made me want to shake her at times, but I still enjoyed watching her journey unfold. Roark, on the other hand? Perfection. Silent, deadly, and deeply loyal. The side characters also shine. Prince Thane is a hilarious scene-stealer, Emi is unexpectedly important, and Kael is the protective older brother every heroine needs.
The pacing is a bit uneven—the beginning is fantastic, the middle drags, but then the last 20% is pure chaos with a killer cliffhanger. If you love deep world-building, morally grey heroes, and a fantasy romance with Viking vibes, this one is worth picking up. Just be prepared for a dense read and immediate desperation for book two.

Interesting magic? Check!
Slow burn romance? Check!
He's reluctant but can't help himself? Check! (I don't know if this is a trope but it fits better than enemies to lovers because it was more should be enemies but they just can't get there)
Found family? Check!
Betrayal? Check!
Touch her and die? Absolutely!
LJ Andrews knocked this one out of the park. As with all of her books the main characters are fantastic. Roark is broody and mysterious and tormented. Lyra is naive but brave and selfless. One of my favorite things about this which was a little different than some of LJ's other works is that the betrayal in this is not so much between the main characters but between the found family which added a new dynamic and I can't wait to see how this is further explored and developed in the next book(s) in the series. The crafter magics and melding are very interesting (again, can't wait to learn more - particularly re: soul) and the history/fated threads....I mean...so many layers, so much world building threads to be built upon.
Thank you Berkley Publishing Group/Ace, LJ Andrews, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this eARC!

LJ Andrews has absolutely knocked it out of the park with Broken Souls and Bones, and let me tell you, this book was a total blast. If you love Viking-inspired romantasy with a complex, brooding MMC and an intelligent, fierce FMC, this is the book you need in your life. It’s fast-paced, twisty, spicy, and just plain fun. Plus, it’s a little dark, which only adds to its appeal. The moment I started reading, I couldn't put it down
Lyra, the FMC, has been hiding for years, keeping her powers a secret and trying to live a quiet, peaceful life away from the chaos. But Lyra is not just any ordinary woman—she’s a powerful melder, and her abilities are something that could change the course of everything. What I love most about Lyra is her intelligence and her strong will. She’s fiercely independent, capable of taking care of herself, and not afraid to stand up for what she believes in. Yet, beneath her tough exterior is a woman who’s been running from her past and trying to suppress her gift. She’s layered, vulnerable, and incredibly compelling. Then there's Roark Ashwood—the MMC, who is a complete badass. Roark is the prince's silent guard, feared and rumored to be a cold-blooded killer. He’s assigned the task of retrieving Lyra, and at first, it seems like he’s a man with no heart, just a mission to complete. But as the story progresses, we slowly peel back the layers of Roark’s character, and it’s so satisfying. He’s not just the unemotional killer he seems to be—there’s so much more depth to him. His interactions with Lyra are filled with tension, and their dynamic is electric. Lyra sneaks her way into his life and slowly earns her place in his cold heart. Watching their relationship evolve from enemies to something more was an absolute highlight of the book. I won’t spoil too much, but the slow-burn romance between Lyra and Roark is everything. Their chemistry is palpable, and I loved seeing them navigate the tension between them.
It’s not just Lyra and Roark who steal the show in this book. The side characters are equally amazing and add so much depth to the story. Lyra’s adoptive brother, Kael, is a standout, their sibling protectiveness was something so fun and refreshing to read. Roark’s Prince/best friend, Thane, also brings a lot to the table with his wit and humor and I’m excited to see how his role unfolds in the series.
Then there's the world-building in Broken Souls and Bones, which is intense and immersive. The Viking-inspired setting comes to life with each page, and I felt completely transported into the story’s universe. The magic system is one of the standout elements of the book—it’s fascinating, unique, and adds such a cool layer to the story. Lyra’s abilities as a melder and the political dynamics at play in this world create a complex backdrop for the characters’ journeys. The intricate details of the magic system were so well thought out, and I can already tell that it will continue to evolve as the series progresses.
Broken Souls and Bones is an exhilarating start to what promises to be an incredible series. The pacing is perfect, the action is gripping, and the character development is top-notch. I gave it 4.75/5 ⭐ , and I can’t wait to see how the world and the stakes evolve in the next books.
Thank you to NetGalley for this eArc.

4 stars. I've heard incredible things about Andrews's romantasy, and I've been dying to read her. So I was super excited to receive an ARC of her brand new series, Broken Souls and Bones. And it did not disappoint! This book reminded me a bit of Danielle Jensen's A Fate Inked in Blood, only better written. So I think that fans of that book will find a lot to enjoy here. There were some components of this book that feel a bit de rigueur for romantasy-- the FMC was an orphan who had a secret gift that made her super powerful, the MMC was a bit grumpy, morally gray, and a warrior with incredible prowess. But even though there were aspects of this book that felt a bit familiar to the genre, I think Andrews did a good job of making this unique as well, especially regarding the magic system. I've read a fair bit of romantasy/ PNR, and although I've certainly read books where people have magical abilities gifted to them from the g-ds, I still felt the magic system was quite unique, and unlike another I've read before. The connection between the FMC and MMC was really strong, and the book was action packed. It did take me a bit to really get engrossed in the book, and to be honest, I'm not sure why, because it wasn't like the world building was too dense or a lack of action. But for whatever reason, it took about 50% for me to fully be invested. But once I was, I did not want to put this down. The last quarter, especially, moves pretty quickly, and there are a lot of surprises at the end. This def. ends on a bit of a cliffy, but in a good way. And I 100% plan to continue with reading book 2.
Thank you so much to Andrews, Berkley Romance/ Ace, and netgalley for the ARC!

DNF @ 35%?
I am actually so devastated. I loved The Ever King by LJ Andrews and was really looking forward to her first traditionally published book. I feel like I’m missing something since this comes out in a month and there’s literally no negative reviews yet.
Here are my thoughts:
I’m confused. The magic system isn’t explained properly and left me confused about what exactly it is. Since the magic is a crucial aspect of the plot it left me confused about the overall story and what the stakes were. Similarly, it had me struggling to connect with Lyra because I wasn’t sure why she was in such danger since I didn’t understand her magic and why it was forbidden. Was it forbidden? I don’t even know.
The world building was lacking as well. The hierarchies weren’t explained, the setting was lackluster and not explained, and again the magic wasn’t properly explained so I couldn’t get a good sense of the world.
Roark and Lyla have potential but I was confused about Roark’s character and motivations. He’s supposed to hate Lyra for some reason because of her magic? I think? Again, it wasn’t properly explained. Anyway, he was supposed to hate her but would comfort her at the same time and it was really confusing.
I desperately wanted to connect with Lyra but AGAIN her magic wasn’t explained properly so I was left confused about the stakes and conflict.
Positives:
-I did appreciate the representation of sign language.
-I enjoyed Kael’s character
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the eARC

Broken Souls and Bones is a bewitching tale that infuses a beguiling magic system against a high-stakes plot, and places at its heart a a romance ready to defy every hurdle in its way. 4.5
Heroine Lyra is content to live a quiet, unassuming life in her village, surrounded by the love of her found family. Yet she knows how fragile her life is as she hides from the world who will gladly use her for her power as a melder. Melding is a magical craft that in Lyra’s case can take power by imbuing the bones of the dead onto the souls of the living, taking on its strengths. It's a craft that comes with grave consequence, and threatens to become a death sentence for Lyra as a power-hungry King aims to use her for his own advantage. Reluctant Hero Roark is the revered guard of the King's son, the crowned prince, who is tasked with first capturing then protecting Lyra after she is forced to stay in the fortress of the mad king. Lyra and Roark connection is one initially met with resentment and disdain, but the more time spent together, the more they come to see their connection is more than just forced proximity, but a soul-shattering bond that will forever divert their expected paths.
There is a lovely line that speaks of the duality of Lyra, one that evokes upon her timidness with her boldness and her fierceness with her mildness. This line resonated with me, as it perfectly sums up this magnificent heroine. She is both soft yet hard, strong yet vulnerable. I loved every side of her. I always appreciate a heroine in fantasy that has that softness about her, that isn't just an all-knowing sharp-edged stone. Lyra has her wits about her, but she also embraces much that she still has to learn. It makes for not only a relatable protagonist, but also an admirable one, for I always relished in her triumphs and rallied for the way she picked herself up after falls.
Then we have our stoic guard Roark. Roark’s POVs are not as frequent as Lyra’s, but when they come around I honed in like no other! I loved being his head, understanding the complexity of his feelings, the swaying of his heart, and all the doubts, longing, and resolve laid in his heart. Roark had an accident that left with him without his voice, but thanks to Thane, son of the King and loyal friend, he has come up with a sign language Roark uses to communicate. I really loved the care the author took in ensuring Roark's voice, however 'silent,' was always heard through his hands. Lyra is immediately and almost unnaturally attuned to Roark from the onset of their meeting. She picks up his speech and it’s almost like they develop their own secret language just for the two of them along the way.
Their relationship begins with an undeniably fraught situation, that only turns more frail as Lyra is thrust into an environment not of her choosing and seemingly promising her demise. Roark should not feel any responsibility towards the melder who harbors a craft he finds so disdainful, but the more he gets to know Lyra he sees less of the melder and more of the woman who has set his very soul on fire. Roark and Lyra circle each other in such deliberate maneuvers, heart and head at constant battle until one wins out. And I think we can all guess which will claim victory. I loved seeing them arrive to that moment, to see those tentative steps become an urgent sprint to the heart’s inescapable call. I do not know what lies ahead for the pair, but I will run right along beside them and hope it leads to a happiness they achingly deserve.
The magic system felt entirely original, unique, refreshing, and endlessly intriguing. It is such a fascinating concept to imagine as I read along. Gruesome as well, sending shivers down the spine. Magic in this world is one built with consequence, and that alone raises the stakes monumentally. The entire world-building comes to life in grand fashion. One trepidation that tends to arise in fantasy reads is too much information dumping that disengages my immersion, but this is not an issue at all in this world-building. I found myself at ease in learning about this world and its magic, and the characters at the heart of it all.
However, the overall narrative pacing is where I found both highs and lows. The beginning is sensational, immediately immersing and carefully guiding me through its world-building and information intake. Never once feeling overwhelmed, rather I felt like best pals with this book as it all got going. Until the middle hit and my engagement waned. The pacing of the middle slowed down to a point that I did find my attention wandering off the page more often than not, and admittedly I aimed for a different rating...then those last 15-10% hit...and wow...
My mind was blown.
My jaw unhinged.
My heart coming to standstill.
I dare not give a single thing away except that leading up to certain reveals I was wondering if there could be a connection between certain subjects involved, because of a particular story told in the latter half of the book, and the answer had me reeling! Even as I drifted towards the correct direction, I still veered off path-- for I did not anticipate *that* specific reveal! The breadcrumbs are all laid out, which I love, I just happen to follow the wrong way, but wow, how satisfying it is to look back and truly see that foreshadowing laid out.
This journey is a wholly worthwhile one, even if at times uneven, it is still a journey that ultimately becomes astonishing to experience. I'll most definitely keep on for that sequel-- this series is filled with endless potential!
Thank you Berkley Romance and NetGalley for the advanced complimentary copy, I leave this honest review voluntarily.

4.5 stars!!!
Thank you to NetGalley and Ace Publishing for the advanced reader copy! I LOVED this book!!
From the moment I started reading, I was completely drawn into this world. The world building is immersive, and I appreciated how much time was spent setting the stage for the rest of the series. The magic system is unique, and I loved following Lyra’s journey as she learned more about her craft and grappled with what it all means. She’s such an endearing FMC. You can’t help but root for her! And then there’s Roark. A warrior, fiercely loyal, and so protective of Lyra. He’s definitely got that possessive, “I’ll burn the world for you” energy, and I was absolutely here for it.
But let’s talk about the side characters because they were EVERYTHING. Prince Thane, Kael, Emi, and Yrsa? The found family vibes were vibing, and I adored every moment with them. They added so much depth and personality to the story.
The only reason this isn’t a full 5 stars is that some parts moved a little slow, but that’s expected with the first book in a new series. LJ Andrews knows exactly what she’s doing, and that cliffhanger has me desperate for book two. I need to know what happens next!!
If you love intricate world building, a unique magic system, found family, and a fiercely protective MMC, Broken Souls and Bones is a must read!!!

LJ ANDREWS DOES IT AGAIN!
I’ve been a fan of LJ since The Broken Kingdom Series and absolutely devoured The Ever Seas Series, so when I saw she was releasing Broken Souls and Bones, I knew I had to get my hands on it. And wow, this book did NOT disappoint. It’s a whole new world, and it has everything you want in a fantasy novel.
From the first page, I was hooked and couldn’t stop reading.
We follow Lyra, a “melder” who can use soul magic to imbue power from ancient bones into people. She gets captured by an enemy kingdom, and while being used, she starts to uncover the full extent of her powers and realizes just how high the stakes really are. Then there’s Roark, her silent captor. He doesn’t speak, but trust me—he doesn’t need words to make you blush. He has that perfect morally grey energy and dark secrets that will definitely have you swooning. But I won’t spoil anything, so I’ll leave it at that!
The magic system is brutal and fits the Viking-inspired world perfectly. It’s dark, gritty, and intense—just the way I love it.
LJ always nails the characters, and Lyra is no exception. She feels so real—her decisions always matter, and you can’t help but root for her as you experience her growth throughout the story. And Roark? He’s the ultimate morally grey character—there’s so much mystery and complexity to him, and the tension between him and Lyra is everything.
The ending!!! Absolutely blew me away. The twists and reveals in the last 15% left me speechless. I can’t wait for book two.
If you love:
🔥 Vikings
🔥 Fantasy with deep lore
🔥 Dark, immersive magic
🔥 Enemies to lovers
🔥 Forced proximity
🔥 Slow burn
🔥 Twists that leave you shook
Then this book is exactly what you need. I’m ready for more, LJ—bring it on!
A huge thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for the ARC! I’m so grateful for the chance to read this early!

•• “𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘭 𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘦. 𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘵”
Well guys, this is one of the most unique magic systems I’ve read since One Dark Window. Made of three elements - Bone craft, Soul craft, and Blood craft - the magic is brutal and powerful. But underneath the surface it seems to be more of a test of humanity than a gift. If I lived there, I’d be happy to be powerless.
Lyra and Roark would probably feel the same. Because of Lyra’s rare ability, melding, she knows better than most just how dangerous power can be. But despite all the danger around her, Lyra is fierce and brave and I really admired her character. And then there’s Roark- the definition of a tortured soul, forever fighting for those he cares about. While Lyra felt drawn to his light, I have to admit I loved his darkness.
•• 𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙢𝙮 𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙡 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙄 𝙠𝙣𝙚𝙬… “𝘒𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵?” 𝘏𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘥 𝘮𝘺 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦. 𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙚.
There’s no shortage of secrets and betrayals in this brutal world, but I still wasn’t prepared for the ending. I have questions. I want answers. For now I’ll just stare at the wall and try to process.
Tropes include:

Dark fantasy romance • Viking vibes
Sign language rep • Morally grey MMC
Dual POV • Enemies to lovers • Touch her & 💀
This book was fantastic and exactly what I want in a romantasy! It’s my first by LJ Andrews and it will not be my last. She perfectly sets up this captivating world with a unique magic system. The bone, blood, and soul craft is brutal.
Lyra is a rare melder, someone who can control all three crafts. Roark is the mysterious guard who takes her captive to work for the enemy king.
I fell in love with this story. Lyra will do anything to keep the people she loves safe. Roark is dark, moody, and just the right amount of possessive. Their chemistry and tension is next level.
There are so many wonderful side characters who stole my heart too. There’s shocking twists and revealed secrets that left me speechless. I was pretty emotional by the end, and I cannot wait for the next book!
Thank you NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for the eARC

I love this author so much and was so excited to get this book. The magic system was a little confusing at first but I had an epiphany and got it haha. Loved the characters and the plot twists. The banter is amazing. Definitely a romantasy worth reading

I’m in my fantasy era and I don’t care who knows it! I loved this book, I love this author, I love the characters, do I need to say more?!

LJ Andrews’ Broken Souls and Bones transports readers to a Viking-inspired world rich with unique magic systems rooted in blood, bones, and souls. The narrative follows Lyra, a bone-melder, and Roark, a stoic sentry who communicates through sign language, as they navigate a realm of warring kingdoms and hidden identities. Their evolving relationship—from enemies to reluctant allies to lovers—is both compelling and heartfelt. Andrews’ masterful world-building and character development create an immersive experience that will leave readers eagerly anticipating the next installment. This novel is a must-have for fans of fantasy romance, especially those seeking diverse representation and intricate plotlines.
