This book was requested when I was young and requested more books than I could possibly read. Sadly, I no longer have access to this book and my tastes have changed. Thus I will not be able to give feedback on this title.
This was a very interesting view of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Told from the perspective of the wetnurse, hired to nurse Juliet and then remained with the family, you see what's happening in the Cappelletti family. And its quite different than what the family want people to know. I think anyone who is interested in putting on the play should read this book first for more insights.
I first read the story of "Romeo and Juliet" when I was in junior high, and I studied it in depth in high school. So reading a book about Juliet's nurse sounded rather intriguing. I always loved the character in the story, and this book gave me a look at this often-overlooked woman. I was not sure what to expect, but I can say this book is definitely a modern-day classic.
As I became engrossed in this book, the twists and turns in the well-known story took me by surprise. I wasn't even sure I liked the direction the story was going. However, by the second half of the story, I appreciated the author's perspective. And the book was so well-researched, I fully embraced the story the author told. It is a plausible story.
For me, the book was a heavy read, but I didn't see that as an issue--it is a modern-day classic. What I will say is that there is some profanity and crude words--I'm sure that was period and went with the story, but I want to caution readers lest you think this is a problem. There were time I did lost interest in the book, but it always came back within a short period of time.
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
