I really liked how the author introduces several types of herbs to try in each season. There are several cases where an herb crosses multiple seasons but for the sake of the theme, I get what they were trying to do. It gave me more ideas of herbs to try for my garden next year.
"Herbs in Every Season" by Bevin Cohen explores the year-round benefits of growing and using herbs. With profiles on 48 herbs, it offers gardeners, cooks, and herbalists practical tips on cultivating herbs, using them in recipes, creating remedies, and understanding their seasonal cycles. Packed with insights and simple DIY applications, this guide shows how herbs enrich our health, gardens, and connection to nature.
Herbs in Every Season by Bevin Cohen is a great resource for anyone interested in the versatile world of herbs. I especially liked how the book is organized by season, making it easy to explore what’s fresh and available throughout the year. Each chapter offers a well-rounded look at individual herbs, highlighting their uses in cooking, medicine, and even providing practical tips for growing and gathering. The inclusion of recipes adds an extra layer of accessibility for integrating herbs into daily life. (I received an advance ready copy and all opinions are my own.) Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned herbal enthusiast, this book is both informative and inspiring!
250+ pages of herbal apothecary and cooking recipes for each herb in their peak season. The pictures are both helpful and stunning. You can tell the author is extremely knowledgeable and explains everything with just the right amount of detail to not be overwhelming for us beginners. There are recipes for hair growth oils, lotions, tea for anxiety and stress, etc. And then the cooking recipes for cookies, salts, just so much more than I ever expected! I know I will personally be using this book for many years. It would be a wonderful “white elephant” gift or for anyone who enjoys gardening or wants to learn how to have some herbal recipes for ailments.
What a useful book! I am definitely adding it to my apothecary shelf. This book is broken into the four seasons and begins with spring. Each season discusses the herbs that will be prevalent during the season. Each herb is discussed in detail and includes recipes for uses- some for eating and some for apothecary uses. The author includes tips on starting your seeds, planting, using your herbal harvest, and storing your harvest. The information in this book is incredibly valuable. The photography is beautiful as well. The book is great for first time herb gardeners, like me, and seasoned (ha ha!) herb gardeners like my sister who has had herbs for years. I shared a tip from the book with her and it was something she didn't know.
I'm a sucker for anything and all things related to herbs. I have many herbalist books and this book is right up there with the others! Love the book and all the information. It's definitely one I'd purchase to add to my herbalist book collection.
This book is very informative and well thought out. It was also very easy to read and understand. I enjoyed how it was broken up by season instead of just alphabetical order as books like this tend to be. I definitely learned about some new plants that I plan on putting in my garden next year. Definitely a great reference for anyone who wants to grow and use herbs for more than just seasoning their food. I also think this book makes a good starting point for anyone who may be curious about herbs.
This book contains beautiful photography and organizes information by season then alphabetically so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for quickly. Or, you may find it enjoyable to read page by page simply to learn more about each herb. I liked the tips for practical applications and recipes for how to use each herb.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book!
This is a lovely book that gives overviews of 48 herbs and how to grow, forage and use them. There are one or two recipes for each and they are divided by season. Many need to be purchased if you live in a temperate climate, especially the ones listed for winter. There were times when I wished for more information, like I have read that there’s one kind of horsetail to use medicinally and I have always thought I had the wrong kind growing near me. He writes as if all horsetail is the same. As one online foraging site says, ˋ It is not uncommon for the different varieties of the horsetail plant to be confused with one another. You must be able to accurately identify the variety of horsetail plant you are foraging because not all varieties are equally infused with either herbal or edible properties.´ There were several times this happened. In general though, it is a well illustrated, interesting, helpful book, especially for those new to herbalism.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.
As someone who only recently discovered the joys of gardening a few years ago, this book is a treasure trove of information. I already grow many of these herbs so I loved the different recipe suggestions. I also learned about so many herbs I’ve never heard of that I now need to plant in my garden! The book was well organized and the photography is beautiful.
Everything about this book has made me super excited! As a gardener and someone who prefers natural remedies when possible, Herbs in Every Season will be a must on my bookshelf. I love that the herbs are broken down into season and each one gives you uses for the apothecary, in the kitchen, growing and gathering, as well as other informational tidbits. This book is not only for those with experience, but also perfect for beginners because of the amount of information given, and the recipes are clear & uncomplicated.
The photography is a perfect match to the theme of this book, the colors are perfectly saturated and moody to give off more of an apothecary vibe. Layouts are a sort of make or break for me with garden books and cookbooks, and this one couldn’t have been done any better than it already is.
I can’t wait to garden for the 2025 season and I have a few more ideas thanks to Herbs in Every Season. I will continuously reference this book throughout the season and try out new to me herbal recipes and remedies.
Thank you NetGalley and Timber Press for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. I’ll be recommending this book to my gardener friends and followers as soon as it releases.

This was a great little read, and resource. An absolutely add to any herbalist shelf. The layout, the detail, and more was outstanding.
This was a super cohesive guide to herbs and their uses. I especially loved that it separated the herbs out by seasons!
What a beautiful book! This book details each and every herb, what it is used for, how to use it, where it comes from, and recipes associated with each herb. I think it's a great introductory book for those who are new to herbs because it breaks them down in easy to digest way but even those who are well seasoned will eat this book up. The breakdown by seasons makes it even better because now I know what herbs are most beneficial durin each season and I love that!
