I’m usually a big fan of books based in the publishing world. This one fell a bit flat for me and I struggled to finish it. I found Allie to be more annoying than anything and found myself wanting to skip past all of her daydreaming. Some of her disassociation would go one for pages. The romance feels like an afterthought and there were times that the plot had gaps that left me more confused than anything. An example being Allie waking up in Wills bed in ch. 20. I thought I had missed a chapter and went back to try and see if I had accidentally skipped ahead. Thank you to NetGalley for the arc.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and One More Chapter, HarperCollins UK for allowing me to read an arc of The Plot Twist!

Allie, a bestselling romance novelist, is struggling with writer’s block in the midst of her own unfulfilling relationship and pressure from an evil publisher. She meets an older author named Martin who is similarly struggling (albeit with a different genre) and the two decide to help each other with ideas and inspiration. On the same night that she meets Martin, Allie also meets a cute caterer named Will, who sparks some romantic inspiration. There are several other side characters and subplots, some of which I really enjoyed, others which I felt slowed the pace of the story and could have been edited out in favor of stronger character and plot development in the main story.

***There are spoilers below!***

I love stories about the publishing world, and I thought the premise of The Plot Twist was very interesting. The writing partnership and dynamic between Allie and Martin was one of my favorite parts of the book. The way they decided to delve into genres they weren’t familiar with reminded me a bit of January and Gus’ agreement in “Beach Read” by Emily Henry. I was a little disappointed that Allie gave her story idea to Martin rather than trying something new herself, and then we didn’t hear much about its progression afterwards. However, I did like how her novels ultimately came together in the end, which wouldn’t have worked out if she had stuck with the crime plot.

There are really two love stories being told in this book. I went in expecting to read about the romance between Allie and Will, but I actually found myself much more captivated by Martin and Angie. All of my favorite moments involved the two of them. When Martin remembered the stories of each time Angie bought one of Allie’s books? Swoon. I LOVED that. I can easily believe that Allie went on to write a bestselling novel about their love and the two of them finding their way back to each other.

However, I desperately wanted more from Will and Allie. In Will’s case, literally more - for a romantic lead, I felt like we barely saw him. I thought he was extremely likable, but I wish we had gotten to know his character on a deeper level. I wish we had seen more of their romance and the way they fell for one another. As it was, I can gather that Allie liked Will because he was hot and she felt a spark, and… I’m really not sure why Will liked Allie. I found her behavior toward him confusing. I didn’t agree with most of her choices. Why did she want to keep him at arms length? Why didn’t she just tell him when she found out about his connection to Martin? Why didn’t she simply text him to explain after the miscommunication with Dominic?

As I mentioned earlier, there were many side characters with their own stories. I feel like a few of them could have been shortened in favor of giving more detail and depth to Will. For example, I personally could have done without Dominic. If the bit about him getting into the “uber” had just been an anecdote about a failed past relationship, I think that might have been enough. On the other hand, I loved Jess and Tom. I thought Jess was such a fun character, and enjoyed all of her scenes. I actually had to check to make sure that there wasn’t a previous book about the two of them, because I thought the story of how they met and fell in love after being introduced by Allie sounded like such a cute romance novel! I also enjoyed Verity and Tessa’s takedown of Jake.

Overall, this is a very cute story with a fun premise and colorful characters. I enjoyed spending time in this world, and would have liked to get to know some of the characters on an even deeper level.

Thank you again to NetGalley and One More Chapter, HarperCollins UK for the arc in exchange for an honest review!

This book fell a little flat for me. I couldn't find a rhythm for reading and following the story line. I was hopeful there would be more attention paid to Will in the beginning but the author just glossed over their interactions. I think it had potential but wasn't my favorite.

I'm very thankful for getting the arc of this book. It was a fun filled romance. Of course at some points it got a bit sad but everything got resolved at the end. I definitely enjoyed it. I loved all of the characters, the main ones more than the others. The only reasons its not a five star is 1. because at some points it felt a bit too silly 2. because some of the arguments in it felt like they were pointless. Thankfully that was pointed out ,but still at the moment it was a bit annoying. Overall i loved this book and i will for sure read any other book that Eleanor Goymer writes. I feel like one of them will be an absolute 5 star read for me.

This is a sweet, enjoyable read.

It’s a bit predictable but sometimes that’s exactly what you need - a bit of a lighthearted story, a big cup of a tea and a rainy afternoon. This is the perfect uplifting book for exactly that sort of afternoon.

I really liked Allie, she was relatable and I loved that her life was a bit messy and she could still find the positives. Will was a gorgeous book boyfriend and the friendship between Allie and Martin was heartwarming

A delightful read

The Plot Twist is a witty romcom where Allie, a romance writer, and Martin, a crime novelist, swap plot ideas to overcome their writer's block. Their collaboration leads to unexpected inspiration and a deeper connection. With engaging characters and humorous twists, this book is a delightful read that celebrates creativity and love.

thanks to one last chapter and netgalley for an arc of the plot twist <3

the premise and synopsis of the book had me really interested, so I really wanted to love it

the plot twist is a 3rd pov story following allie and martin as writings with manuscripts due and nothing to show to their publishers

for me I struggle to get indulged in a story that’s written in 3rd person, but I did enjoy this as it was a quick and easy read that I basically finished in one sitting

if you’re looking for a fun and lighthearted romcom the plot twist is for you <3

I really wanted to like this one, the premise sounded so good and different. But wow did it fall flat, the romance was so dull. The characters did not work for me at all. We didn't see any relationship developing so it was truly hard to root for them or believe their relationship. This was not what I expected and not in a good way.

It was cute, by 25% I knew exactly what was going to happen in pretty much the entire entirety of the book.
It’s well written and the characters were fine, but I also feel like this could’ve been a lot shorter
The FMC definitely makes her life a lot harder than it needs to be by not communicating with people like an adult….
It’s closed door, not sure if spice would have helped or not but I will say it was also kind of wishy-washy as to whether or not the characters were even having a sexual relationship or if it was flirty like high school and that was it. It wasn’t romantic at all to me.
The MMC was closed off for no good reason and just kinda seemed to be going along with things. The romance had little chemistry

I enjoyed the relationship between Allie and Martin - it was heartwarming to see their dynamic evolve from professional collaboration to a deeper, almost familial bond. The concept of switching genres was unique and had a lot of potential. However, the story often fell into “tell me” rather than “show me” territory, which made it hard to fully connect with the characters and their journeys. The romance with Will felt a bit underdeveloped, leaving the emotional stakes lukewarm. Overall, a light and charming read, but it lacked the depth and spark to make it truly memorable.

Overall, I did really love this book, it was a light hearted rom-com that was easy to read, I read it in a couple of days. It was really easy to get into and I realy loved the main charactes and I felt as though the relationship was playing out like something you would see in a movie. I would say to read this if you love rom-coms with a twist (pun intended)!

1⭐ — plot twist, this book wasn't good.

I thought this sounded like a premise for a fun rom com, but unfortunately for me the execution was a bit of a car crash! There were so many random, disconnected plotlines in this book, it's clear that the author didn't know which story they were trying to tell. Not only did this result in all of these storylines being heavily watered down, rushed and shallow, it also meant there was zero room left for developing the main romance, which was meant to be the central plot. I didn't care about any of the characters or their relationships at all. Sadly, no redeeming factors. It needed a MAJOR edit.

This book is such a delightful, heartfelt romcom that had me grinning from start to finish. The chemistry between them is electric, and I loved watching their connection grow. The romance, though slow-burn, has plenty of tension and warmth to keep you hooked. The balance between Allie’s professional growth, her blossoming relationship with Will, and the lighthearted exploration of both authors’ struggles makes for a perfect mix of heart and humor. This story hits all the right notes when it comes to navigating love, career, and the chaos of being a writer. Overall, a definite feel-good, romcom with a side of literary charm.

i really really wanted to like this one 🥲! the premise was different and it sounded so so good but I found the fmc to be so unlikeable, her decisions and immaturity was so jarring.
i also felt that the romance with will fell a bit flat (he was lovely) but we didn't seem them interact enough, which was largely due to the amount of plot points going on at any given time.

overall, not my favourite read but there were some parts of the book I loved - especially the banter and allie's relationship with martin .
