Reve (Revelation) Dyer's life is upended when her magician's pistol delivers live rounds into her husband, killing him. Devastated and terrified for her children, she and her 3 girls flee to her roots in Hawley, Massachusetts. It turns out the many Revelations in her ancestry all have some kind of very real magical power (Reve can disappear). She has been raised on family stories of previous Revelations, but also "protected" from many of their secrets. When she discovers the Hawley Book of the Dead, a grimoire passed down through her family, the past and present crash over her. Then two of her girls go missing, and she is being stalked....
This was quite fascinating. The bits of magic are beautifully and believably integrated into the story. Characters and relationships have depth and suspense is maintained throughout the novel. An excellent read.
