This very pastoral story made me want to read the rest of the series!
The characters are well-rounded and the story is fast-paced. World-building is very subtly done within the progress of the plot as the characters pursue their quests. The way the two characters come together and aid each other read very seamless and realistic. This has high fantasy vibes with long journeys and cosy personal quests. Looking forward to reading more in this world.
3.75 stars.
Since this is a prequel I don't have much criticism on it, just 'cause it isn't the main story. However, its a nice start on the plot and I think there was a bit of foreshadowing but I won't know for sure until I read the whole series. I did love the aspect of the protagonists being polar opposites but still finding a way to each other. I just couldn't wrap my head around the historical writing 'cause I felt as though it was pretentious.
Overall, well researched and very very entertaining characters.
I haven't read the Enemy's Keeper series but since this is a prequel I think that's okay, I didn't feel like I was missing anything.
This is very endearing story with likable characters and sweet friendship. It was fast paced and I was engaged the whole time. I loved the world building and the main characters
This prequel really took me by surprise! Even though it's YA, I couldn’t help but get pulled into the story. The friendship between Aelfric and Aliwyn was amazing, and watching their characters grow throughout the book was a real treat. A solid start with some fantastic character development!
Thank you, Netgalley & the author, for the arc!
