I loved this book, purely for the fact that the premise was so unique and individual compared to anything i’ve read before.
The title was the thing which drew my attention originally, and then the synopsis had me hooked. Upon starting, I realised that the book focused on people being born differently, which society may view as ‘monsters’ as it differs from the social normality in which is drilled into us since birth. Everyone has something which makes them different to others, that may be the way they choose to dress, how they act, kinks etc. Just because you differ from someone else, doesn’t mean you’re a monster.
I loved how this book focused on love, with hints of comedy and lightheartedness regarding the situation.
I personally loved how the book never dehumanised differently abled characters; it provided them with the purpose to stake their claim over how they wish to rule their life.
I enjoyed how quick of a read this book was, however I would definitely read a longer version of this as well!
Thank you Netgalley for this one. It was a great, fun , and quick read. I really enjoyed it and I would recommend it.
A failure of satire and analysis that becomes the very monster it is meant to critique. I found little enjoyment reading this.
While this book is not something I would normally read, I’m very glad that I did! At the start, I wasn’t entirely sure I was going to finish the text but really got into it (keep going it’s worth it!) after about 20 pages & thoroughly enjoyed the content. The MMC made me question the under exposed dark sides to the adult film industry along along with the potential for danger in niche categories however I feel like this could have been explored further.. I think this could have been another 100 pages long as when I finished the story I was left wondering “what now?!” I will absolutely be reading more of Moore’s work
Sadly had to DNF after about 30%. This became what it's supposed to critique. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for this free eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Thank you to NetGalley and Blood Bound Books for the Advanced Reader Copy.
I am so disappointed with this that I am unsure how to put it into words. I think the author's intent might have been a satirical look at exploitation in the porn industry, but it was so poorly executed it just came off as being what it was critiquing.
There is so much abhorrent ableism for such a small page count. Regardless of how Moore really feels, the book makes it seem as if she just truly believes disabled people are both undesirable and to be used as objects. This novella is a masterclass on how not to do satire/parody.
This was a very strange but unique novella. I thought it was entertaining overall and funny at times. I did think this book gave the message that no matter what is “wrong” with you, there is someone out there that likes it. I can guarantee you have never read a book quite like this. It’s worth the read if you don’t mind the adult industry.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC!
I found myself let down by this book. I was hoping for some kind of satirical and biting piece of work with a focus on how the adult entertainment industry is so frequently dominated by men who believe that their fetishes and thoughts are the pinnacle, to the detriment of many women and other people in said industry. That's not what this was though. It was a haphazard fetishisation, with odd erotica vibes at the same time as being disconnected and, quite frankly, a little bizarre.
I found myself frustrated by the complete lack of characterisation in this novella. I didn't feel much of anything for anyone in this book, and I struggled to put it together as to what story we were following. It felt like just a weird exercise in erotica and satire, but it missed the mark for me. I did think some of the industry tips and tricks were quite interesting, hence the two stars, but unfortunately I don't think this book did what it set out to accomplish.
Unfortunately I found this story too ableist and misogynistic. I was hoping it would be more satire or parody, but it didn’t come across that way, so I really couldn’t find meaning or enjoyment in it.
Not sure how I feel about this tbh..this was a read me now and I was intrigued about the whole 'she looks like Marilyn Monroe' catch phrase. Could have skipped this one.
What a crazy book! It kept me hooked from the start and had me glued to each page to see what would happen next. I really like the concept and how the plot went! It was very different than anything I’ve read before so it was a breath of fresh air. The pacing was good and a little fast so it didn’t feel like it was dragging out. I do think it would be nice to have the characters names at the top of the chapters for who’s POV it is since at times it was a little confusing who was talking. Also a mark to show that time has passed between certain chapters because I feel like it jumped quickly out of nowhere and I had to figure that out. But overall I really enjoyed this and I’m thankful I got approved for this on Netgalley!

2 ⭐️. reading about the male gaze within the p*rn industry....gag me with a spoon.
ty to NetGalley and Blood Bound Books for an advance reading copy in exchange of an honest review.
Monster Porn by KJ Moore is perfect for erotica reader.
Mike is a foley artist and he knows how to produce sound effects for porn film industry. He finds himself falling for Chloe, the top actress in “FreK Porn”. However, Dwain, his bussiness partner has another thought about their bussiness.
Love it. It's something different and a bit saucy if ya know what I mean.
Give it a chance. You will love it too.
Trust me.
This is a brief story about a couple of men working in the porn industry who realise they can make a buck off disabled people. I was expecting it to feel more satirical, rather than downright ableist, it wasn’t executed well in my opinion.
There are adlibs of what foods and household items can be used to simulate sex noises sprinkled throughout which was fun. While the author highlights the non-glamorous elements of shooting porn, an opportunity to spark thoughts about exploitation in the porn industry is squandered. When the MC’s business partner does something COMPLETELY immoral, the MC gets to hop onto his high horse, which is easy when there’s no grey area. This book just didn’t do what it set out to do.
I love novellas but this one definitely lacks in fleshing out the characters, I knew next to nothing about any of them and I really need that connection to enjoy a book. Ultimately I only experienced empathy for one very minor character and the rest is forgettable. The thing this book has going for it is that I was definitely engaged and needed to know what would happen next. If you’re looking for a quick, wtf read you might enjoy! But not if you want something with any message or memorability.
Thank you Netgalley & Blood Bound Books!!
This book is not for everyone, however, those who like a horror/offbeat type book would enjoy this. The premise I found to be interesting and not like anything I've really read before. I do wish it was a bit longer to flesh out the characters a little more and get more of Mike/Chloe.
I have to be honest and say this book had some very high high points and some very low low points. The high moments were the adlibs where you learn what household objects make specific sounds in p0rn. And the lowest moments were all those releated to the treatment and discussion with of disabled people. I don't believe the book is Own Voices so it just didn't feel very balanced or tasteful in how disability was weaved into the. narrative other than the main character's own (undiagnosed) condition which also could have been explored more and been more interesting.
Thanks to NetGalley for a free review copy.
this was shockingly good. I went in expecting a real splatterpunk type of vibe, but this was a lot better than that. I felt like this was subversive but still respectful of persons with disabilities.
I found this book quite uncomfortable to read…I had hoped for a more empowering or inspiring feeling to it but I actually just felt a bit repulsed and strange once I had finished it…
I think this book was interesting but nothing full stuck out to me. I think the writing went in and out on my personal preferences and how I like my writing style to be when reading. Overall I recommend it but it wasn't one I was overly passionate about. I think KJ Moore is talented and I enjoyed reading it but there was some times I felt it dragged even though it is a short book.
