When the Air Sang follows a delightful young girl as she discovers more and more about cicadas. Not only does this book teach children about cicadas, but also, there are lessons about practicing patience and the expertise of family members.
The illustrations are stunning and text is approachable.
This will make an excellent addition to all libraries and children's collections.

I think that this book definitely encourages little ones to be creative and stay curious, especially when it comes to nature. I am personally not a huge fan of cicadas, but this book makes the journey of cicadas very beautiful. Additionally, it's very accurate and will fill young minds with relevant knowledge. The reason why this book was also beautiful was the illustrations. They were soft but still very vivid and lively. On top of that, emotion was flawlessly conveyed, especially emotions such as curiosity, patience, and wonder. Building off of that, this book also teaches kids that patience pays off, and that it can lead to great things. Readers will apply this message to their own lives because this book's main character sets such a good example. This book's topic wasn't really my cup of tea, but I know that many kids will enjoy reading this book and will learn a lot from it!
Annie loved to explore the outdoors and discover all kinds of living creatures. She watched the ants march in a row. Afterwards, Annie's great grandmother told her about cicadas. In the dirt, there were holes everywhere. It is here that the cicadas emerge. As Annie waited, and waited, and waited, she became a little impatient. One night, Annie's grandmother woke her up and when she looked outside, she saw hundreds of cicadas crawling up trees and on the ground. As of yet, their song wasn't being sung. There was still some waiting to be done for Annie. When she woke up one morning, she heard CRICK-TRRRILL-ISCH-TSCH-TSCH. There was finally a chorus of cicadas. There was a time when all the cicadas were dying. She was sad, but her mother assured her they would emerge again in 17 years.
Annie marveled at the mysterious cycle of life the cicadas followed, finding it both beautiful and bittersweet. She felt a sense of wonder knowing that these creatures spent years underground, only to grace the world with their presence for such a short time. Despite her sadness at their passing, Annie looked forward to the day she would witness their miraculous return.
Annie felt a deep connection to nature's rhythms, appreciating life's fleeting moments of beauty. Witnessing the cicadas' emergence filled her with awe and belonging to something greater than herself. She understood that these cycles reminded her of life's ever-changing yet enduring nature.
This is a book about a little bug loving girl who is waiting for the cicadas. I enjoyed that it's a book about her looking high and low for them, monitoring their holes and her family was supportive and helpful. I especially like that at the end there is a bunch of information about Cicada', so informative and fun to read.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc.
Darling illustrations and a fun story with a sweet undercurrent. This would be a great read for bug-loving little explorers. The book was a good length and held the attention of a five and seven-year-old really well. The cicada facts at the end were also a hit.
Exploring with patience brings magical rewards as two different generations overlap and unfold in this wise and educational story.
Complimentary appreciation for cicadas and generations in a family illuminate the beauty found in patience and in waiting and sharing natural wonders with future generations. While I’ve listened to cicadas for decades, in different countries, the clear cicada timeline at the back of the story made me appreciate these special neighbors even more.

The nostalgic illustration style is what caught my eye and kept my attention. I also loved how the story was both educational and sentimental as family members connected over nature. I’d recommend reading the back matter first!
When the Air Sang tells the story of bug loving Annie as she waits for the cicadas to appear and sing their song. Through the book, Annie learns that some things are worth waiting for.
I thought this book was lovely! As a bug lover, I loved seeing how excited Annie was to see the cicadas. The illustrations in this book are beautiful. They help fill the book with wonder! I also loved that there were facts about cicadas at the end of the book. I would recommend this book to bug lovers in my life :)

A children's book about cicadas. I wanted to like this one more than I did. I was expecting more information to teach kids about cicadas but this felt lacking. It had promise but just didn't really deliver for me.
I love how this story weaves multiple tales in behind the main plotline, a young girl waiting to see cicadas hatch. The illustrations are lively and the writing feels comforting, natural, and honest.
Annie is an adventurer and once she learns about cicadas, she can hardly wait until they emerge from the ground! But as her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother all tell their own cicada stories, Annie comes to realize that patience (especially in nature) definitely pays off.
This is such a cute book with even more adorable illustrations — as well as some super informative back pages about cicadas. Perfect for the little outdoor explorers!
