A classic Modglin thriller—trapped in a nightmare, fast-paced, and filled with twists that keep you guessing. The story follows Sophie Thatcher, who wakes up in a locked, unfamiliar room with no memory of how she got there. As the clock ticks down, Sophie must uncover the truth before time runs out.
The book was definitely entertaining, and its short length helped maintain a sense of urgency that kept me turning pages. I enjoyed the flashbacks, which gave more depth to Sophie's character and helped piece together her story. However, the male protagonist felt underdeveloped. While his silence added to the mystery and made me question his role in Sophie's predicament, it also made it hard to root for him—a choice that felt intentional but left me wanting more connection.
The audio narration added to the characters emotions and helped them seem more dimensional than how I expect they would have come across simply in text.
True to Modglin's style, *The Hidden* delivers suspense and intrigue, but it didn’t leave me overly excited. Some parts of the story felt underexplored, and the ending wrapped up in a way that left me a bit disappointed. Overall, it’s a good read if you're looking for a quick, twisty thriller, but it might not be the most memorable in Modglin’s lineup.
The Hidden by Kiersten Modglin is a gripping psychological thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. The characters are complex, and the suspense is relentless, making it difficult to put the book down. With its unpredictable plot and shocking revelations, The Hidden is a must-read for fans of suspense and psychological drama.
Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the ARC
A short thriller that grips you from the first page while you try to puzzle out what happened to the MC
This book is one that was a little difficult for me to read because of the nature of the violence. It was a well-developed story, however, and I'm glad that I continued reading. The thrills were pretty intense, and there was definitely a horror element to this once. I would recommend this for readers with a strong stomach for violence, but I will probably not be reading another book in this genre by this author.
Thanks to netgalley for the advanced readers copy of this book.
Kiersten Modglin’s The Hidden, in audiobook form, is a thrilling and addictive ride from start to finish. The narrator expertly brings Modglin’s gripping, fast-paced story to life, capturing the suspense, tension, and emotional depth of the plot. The story itself is a masterclass in psychological suspense, with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat, never quite sure where it’s headed next. The characters are deeply compelling, and the narrator’s skillful delivery amplifies their complexities, making their emotions and motivations feel incredibly real. The Hidden is a must-listen for fans of suspenseful thrillers, offering a captivating, heart-pounding experience that will leave you eager for more.
This concept was TERRIFYING. This was absolutely NOT where I thought it was going, and I will never be the same after learning about this. Thank GOD I am not dating.
Oh goodness! That did not turn out the way I expected. I have read a lot of KMod's books, and they never disappoint. I love that we dive right into the meat of the story without all the unnecessary preamble.
This story follows Sophie as she is abducted and tries to break free. We bounce back and forth between the present and the past, concluding the flashbacks when Sophie figures out how she ended up in this mysterious location. The story does include themes of death, sexual assault, and questionable choices. I did figure out who the bad guy was, but it was quite obvious. However, the ending of the story surprised me.
I would explore more of what I enjoyed, but every part of the story moves the plot forward. As is typical with KMod, there isn't a lot of fluff; it's straight to the point. The narrator did a fantastic job, intensifying the anxiety throughout the story. Overall, it was a quick and enjoyable read!
2.5
Started out really strong but that ending, oof truly ruined the book for me. The narrator did a fantastic job of bringing the main characters to life. She added the right amount of emotion and I could feel the tension. However, the story wasn't overall very compelling and the pacing while starting out strong became slow around 40% in. I wouldn't recommend this book but I would recommend this author. I've read several other books by this author that I truly enjoyed!
Thank you so much for my gifted copy. All thoughts and opinions are mine
If you love thrillers full of suspense and keep you on edge, this is it. A whirl wind of anticipation! A bit dark and twisty. I listened to the audiobook and it really brought things to life. Creepy good!
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley for my honest opinion.
Dark story that may hit hard for sensitive readers. It’s a rough and deep story with unexpected twists. Overall a great story.
This psychological thriller started out with the feel of a locked room mystery and quickly morphed into more of a horror novel! Sophie wakes up in an unfamiliar space with no idea how she got there, and no way to escape. And then her ex shows up and he can't get out, either.
This is a compelling read/listen with a really original, creepy twist. The audio narration was engaging and unsettling.
This was fantastic. I really enjoyed it and couldn’t stop listening. I was hooked from the first minute! The narration was wonderful. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this audiobook.
The story immediately jumps right in to Sophie waking up somewhere new. She’s disoriented with no memory and assumes it was a one night stand. But she soon realizes she’s locked in. It jumps back and forth from the lead up to the abduction, and present day, Sophie trying to figure things out and escape.
Fast paced and fun throughout. I do enjoy a solvable mystery, and found this to not be the case. Wild plot to keep you guessing until the end.
Huge KMod fan over here! I love her stories because they are dark, thrilling, and fast. This one, however, wasn't my favorite. I enjoyed the characters and the build up, and the twists kept me engaged. The ending just fell flat and left me disappointed. I will say that the narration on this audiobook was fantastic! Gail Shalan was able to narrate several voices seamlessly, including male characters. Overall, I would recommend this book and all other KMod books to other readers. Thank you NetGalley, Kiersten Modglin, and Dreamscape Media for this ALC. All opinions are my own.
Kiersten is the Queen of thrillers! There is no doubt in my mind that anything she writes is going to be fabulous. This one was that! I had no clue where this one was going. The twists and turns were throwing me off and keeping me guessing. The plot had me in a choke hold! I literally couldn’t stop listening to this audiobook, I finished it in less than a day. At the end when I thought I had it figured out.. WRONG! I don’t see that one coming! Kiersten is the Queen, Freida who??
The narrators brought this one to life with ease. That sinister plot was taken to the next level with this crew. I love audiobooks and how well played out this one was done was top tier. Fantabulous job!!
This was a very different type of book Modglin writes. While it was interesting and kept me interested, I did not feel it worked out the best.
I love Kiersten Modglin, so I was so excited to listen to this audiobook. This book was very suspenseful and sucked me right in. I also really enjoyed the narrator, so it made listening and following along super easy.
This was my first Kiersten Modglin book and it was a good one. I've heard rave reviews about her and was happy to receive an ARC of hers. Sophie wakes up in a room groggy and with no clue how she got there or where she is. There is a mysterious countdown clock on the wall. The book did a great job in going back and forth between present and past to nicely tie together the events happening. It was a quick read and definitely worth it.
Sophie wakes up in a white room after a one-night stand. She doesn't remember anything. Her purse, jacket, phone are all missing. And the door is locked.
I loved the premise of this book, how quick it was to hook me, how fast it moved. I just felt the ending was a bit of a let down. I do love that the girls start a detective agency in the epilogue though!
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and Dreamscape Media for my copy of this audiobook
This story kept you on your toes and at the edge of your seat. The story does bounce back and forth some but overall it was a great book. I had no idea what was happening and if it was real during parts of it.
