I wanted to write a review for this work for my blog, Cobleskill Commentaries; however, I have not been able to write about it comprehensively, so I am going to provide a concise review here.

From the Shadow of the Blues is a wonderful memoir about the sordid, drug-addicted life of John Lee Hooker, Jr., the son of John Lee Hooker, and how he was able to claw his way out of the abyss to become a God-loving man, who cleaned himself up and became a strong musician like his dad. The book is filled with history from the standpoint of Hooker, Jr., and readers see his experience through his eyes, which are wizened by time and addiction., but open to how sobriety was a better option, the best option for himself and his health. The book is a strong one, speaking about drug addiction in a strong way, but showing readers that one can overcome with perseverance, guidance, and the love of God. Beautiful work!

Being born in 1972, this story was pretty interesting.

Loved how John shared the story of his life growing up singing and how him and dad performed together. This story was inspiring, it showed the struggles and redemption of being the son of sharecropper and how they persevered through the hardships of a broken home and drug addiction.

I will definitely purchase this book!
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me the opportunity to read this story in exchange for my honest review.
