This is a fantastic introduction into SEL, self-talk, and growth mindset. This could span Pre-K to grade 3 and will surely help readers develop positive thinking about themselves and their efforts. This would be a fantastic book for an SEL unit in an elementary school. If kids are introduced to these ideas early it will help them be better, more flexible learners in the future. I would add this to any public, classroom, or elementary school library. A must-have for SEL!
The Power of Yet is a lovely children's book about growth mindset. Full of encouraging words and easy-to-adopt strategies, the succinct text is balanced with both illustrations of Sesame Street characters and photographs of diverse groups of kids. I think this is a lovely story for preschoolers, those who enjoy Sesame Street, and families that are experiencing a stage of "I can't do it!" with little ones.
Thank you to Lerner Publishing Group for gifting my family with an ARC to review. All opinions are our own.
This book from Sesame Street is full of wonderful and accessible tips for kids to build a growth mindset. It is full of recognizable characters for the kids as well. However, I feel like the formatting of the book does it a disservice. The blocky nature of the of all the text boxes versus the pictures I feel makes it less visually intriguing, which I have found with little ones can make all the difference. The format gives it more of a "looking a photo album" feeling than a book about learning to manage our emotions and grow.
Awesome book! I have zero bad things to say about this book. The lesson that this book was trying to teach was organized well, made sense, and is perfectly age-appropriate. Additionally, including the Sesame Street characters on each page learning alongside the reader adds so much to the book and increases its impact. I know for certain that this book will empower so many young readers everywhere through education and the true power of "yet".
Bravo!
This book is adorable! The Power of Yet is perfect for preschoolers up through first grade based on its simple language and pictures. The book teaches children patience as they learn a new skill, using the word "yet" as a way to encourage the child to persist in their learning. For example, instead of saying "I can't jump rope" you would encourage your child to say "I can't jump rope....yet", implying that they are still learning and that's okay!
This is such a good lesson for little kids, especially children who get frustrated easily and want to give up when they aren't good at something right away. I've found in my experience as a parent that often times my youngest son will want to give up because he can't keep up with his older brothers. The Power of Yet encourages him to keep trying.
I love the mix of real photographs and illustrations with popular characters from Sesame Street. That felt very nostalgic for me and engaging for the kids. Great book, teaches a great lesson!
This book was sweet and encouraging featuring some of the most beloved characters. I was expecting the book to be a lot more similar or reminiscent of the song from the show though. While I would read it to my child, I don’t know if I would buy it since it didn’t even quote the song my child is used to hearing.
This book was not only cute but had an awesome message for not only littles but adults, too - you can't do it...YET!
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!
I read this to both my kids, 3 & 9, and they both enjoyed it. The 3yo loves Elmo so she was in it for the pictures, the 9yo could follow more of the theme of the book: don’t give up; keep trying if you want to do something.
The hardest part of learning something new is worrying about failure. That's normal and okay! This book encourages you to be patient and try new things. When you encounter obstacles or have too many negative feelings, ask for help! This book is the encouragement we all need, and I loved that it was told through my old folders from Sesame Street. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
This is a very sweet book about perseverance and practice for young readers, told through beloved Sesame Street characters. Elmo and Big Bird certainly helped my pre-schooler be more interested in the concepts addressed in the book. He could relate to Big Bird practicing jumping rope and Elmo learning how to ride a bike. He really enjoyed seeing his favorite characters on the pages along with fun activities he could relate to.
This story was also timely for my three year old who keeps saying “I can’t do it”… and now he has learned to add “yet” and keep trying, just like Bert and Ernie.
We also really liked the bumblebee breathing, and we had fun practicing it!
Thank you to NetGalley and Lerner Publishing Group for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Overall, the book was well written, captured my attention and I did really enjoy it. Thank you for this advance copy!
As a preschool educator and a mom, this book was perfect for me. I loved the explanation of feeling frustrated and how it can make our body feel a certain way. I also loved relating grown ups to kid problems and how we were all once beginners!
Whitney Sanderson, you just wrote the most darling, and adorable children's book with such a big topic. I loved it! My four kids adored it. We had such good conversations to follow this. Thank you for a great family book.
I received an electronic ARC from Lerner Publishing Group through NetGalley.
The Sesame Street gang offers encouragement and support for young readers who may not be able to do activities they want to. They offer tips and advice to keep trying and to recognize that learning takes time. They emphasize the power of yet and encourage readers to add this small word to their thinking. This changes how they view any task before them. They may not be able to do something yet, but they will keep trying. The illustrations are colorful and the text is simple to follow. I appreciate the last page with the "I Can Do It!" message. This allows readers to affirm themselves and think about what they want to accomplish. A definite for families with preschoolers.
I have not mastered the skill of X . . . yet. A wonderful, psychologically sound book about how to learn new stuff, how to be patient, and how to achieve mastery. This is a great book, very needed, and nicely done in a Sesame Street mode. Personally, I find some of the Sesame Street characters rather annoying, but the book is great and the lesson is sound and essential.
This book does a great job of explaining what a growth mindset is to children. It was even a good reminder for me as an adult!
The book was engaging. It was filled with bright colors and pictures of everyone’s favorite characters from Sesame Street. One thing I loved about the book was that it showed a diverse group of children (and little monsters), so that anyone reading it could feel represented. I would recommend this book to anyone with a young child. It effectively demonstrates how someone can learn a new skill and have a growth mindset while doing so. Often, children can feel discouraged, and this book offers simple reminders that they may even be able to memorize to help them persevere.
The Power of Yet describes growth mindset in a way that kids can follow; giving examples applicable to them, such as practicing how to ride a bike. The Sesame Street character tie-in will keep fans interested. This would be a great home or classroom resource for those wanting to share the concept with young kiddos.
Thanks to Lerner Publishing Group and NetGalley for an eARC of this book for an honest review.
