Cute read to read to children for wind down time just before sleep.
Encourages them to think relaxing thoughts while also teaching them.to count.
Told in rhyming verses which always seems more fun for children, with great illustrations too.
This is a super cute book that will be great for helping young children learn to count. The flowing rhythm of the story will also help soothe them to sleep.
I like the layout, with each double page being allocated to one number with text on one side and a corresponding image on the other.
I can see this being the sort of book that could be read over and over.
A child cannot go to sleep until he's counted sheep, so we count with him – and get a four-line verse alongside each image of progressively more sheep, from 1 to 10. The text is fine – some bits of it making more sense than others, but rhyming very strongly and pleasantly. The visuals are also fine – really cute and definitely fluffy-looking sheep do their thing. I certainly got the impression AI was involved in this side of things, if not in the writing too, but at a knock-down price (according to netgalley) there's little cause for complaint.
I love books that help kids get to sleep. Sometimes kids just have trouble shutting off their brain and going to bed but this book has a cozy feel to it. I loved the little rhyming poems with the sheep while they were doing the little facial expressions. I could see my nephews and nieces loving this book before bed. I picture in my brain a nice warm bath and they've got some lavender lotion on and they're settling in reading this book to help them go off to sleep. The art was colorful to keep their eyes looking at every page.
Thank you to I am grateful to Mara Mae, BooksGoSocial, and Netgalley for the Advanced Reader Copy of this title.
This is an adorable litle book that does exactly what it sets out to do in the blurb. Mae has produced a simple, classic, rhyming book that counts from 1 to 10 using sheep as the vehicle to fall asleep learning numbers.
I love the learning element of this book. It includes the spelling of the number at the start of the associated page and prints the number on the corner of the picture page as well as depicting the relevant number of sheep doing something that corresponds with the text. For the most part, the rhyming flows really well, although I was halted after stumbling at 'nine fluffy sheep'.
I couldn't decide whether I liked the blank white page with block text on the left, with the picture on the right. On the one hand, it provided a predictable structure and less distraction for going to sleep, but as a day time reading book, the text page seemed bland. Howewver, I did like the big bold text that makes it easy for children to follow along. Sure, it included some words that the target group is unlikely to use or know during the time the book remains appealing to them e.g., serene, and inspired, but I'm not sure it matters all that much.
This is a great bedtime read to soothe young children to sleep with the mundane counting and their proimary caregiver's voice, yet a lovely illustrated text to pick things out of the picture when feeling more stimulated during the day. It's a book likely to be selected repeatedly thus making a good addition to play centres, nurseries, and a child's reading corner at home.
The illustrations were giving an AI feel about them. They have that CGI look about them. If this is the case, they were well supported by the prompts and perfectly fitting for the book with a uniform feel to them. Either way, I liked the images.
Overall, I rate the book a 4/5 stars simply because the flow faltered towards the end, and the left page could have been more aesthetically pleasing.
This book is based on the classic concept of counting sheep to sleep. The story is easy to read in a quiet calming way to lull a little ones to sleep. The font is big, bold and on a white background making it super easy for kids learning words to recognize. I love that the book encourages counting too. The art, while seemingly AI generated, is really cute and we loved seeing the different positions the sheep were in on each page. Cute book and I’d recommend!
1. My point of view
A gentle bedtime book. My only recommendation is that in the paragraph be shortened a little bit.
2. Four-year-old daughter's point of view
I think I like the book more than she has because I want her to go to sleep.
I would rate Super Fluffy Sheep Counting to Sleep by Mara Mae 3 out of 5.
This was a cute book but we had issues with the ebook version.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #BooksGoSocial for the #ARC to review. The opinions expressed are my own. Publication date: September 14, 2024.

Wow! This was so cute and so fun! The little one was so into saying baaaaaa and would rub their eyes so that it took some time before I could turn the page for her. Would be better with sensory fluff, but digital copies are what they are.
As everyone who reads my blog knows, I'm a knitter and I love sheep. I was very drawn to the cover of this books, particularly those psycho looking sheep! And the story was super-cute, but the illustrations are clearly produced by AI, which is not mentioned anywhere. It is written by "Mara Mae" who might be a real person, but has a very light internet presence. Anyway, AI gives me the creeps because it can only take from existing ideas, so it's not giving anything. You might have thought that it's the theft inherent in AI, or the environmental costs that might be my biggest concern, but it's that it can only recycle never create. And I just wanted to read a cute cute children's book, and now I have to consider the end of independent thought and art, and also the destruction of the environment. I regret requesting this book, because once I worked out what was going on I had to one star it, and also write this ranty review.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with this e-Arc, although please note I am doing the appropriate acknowledgements, where this book does not.
I had so much fun reading this book! There are two things that I liked about this book, and two things that didn't work so well.
The good:
- The rhyming worked perfectly and definitely puts the reader into a focused and relaxed state. This makes it a perfect bedtime book for very young readers. This makes it an accessible and easy tool for parents to use to get their little ones to bed effortlessly.
- The sheep in the illustrations were adorable! These brought me a lot of joy reading this book, and I know for sure that kids will adore the sheep as well.
The not-so-good:
- I would have liked to see some more variety in the illustrations. After about two pages, they started to feel very repetitive. As a result, a lot of the illustrations became lackluster, when there was so much potential.
- Similarly, there wasn't a lot of variety in terms of vocabulary. In the next few days, if I have to read the word "soft" one more time I will scream. There were many other adjectives that the author could have used to describe the sheep to help keep the reader engaged and interested.
Thank you NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for this electronic ARC of "Super Fluffy Sheep Counting to Sleep" by Mara Mae.
This is super cute to read at bedtime! I love the rhyming and number practice which are both great skills for kids to practice! This would be a great gift!
I was given a free copy of this from NetGalley for my honest review.
This cute little book has adorable illustrated sheep to be counted as littles try and go to sleep. I couldn't keep from kind of singing the words in my head. This really was a cute little book. It does go from 1 to 10 and it's sheep also getting ready for bed as you read to your own little.
This is a fun, wholesome read that makes for a good bedtime story and brings the concept of "counting sheep" to life for young children. Although it is a good read, I was a bit put off by the AI art throughout the book and also the formatting of the text, which looked rather amateur. I do understand that it is self published but those factors do go a long way.
Thank you to BooksGoSocial, the author and NetGalley for the digital book in exchange for an honest review.
This was such a wholesome kids book and the illustrations are absolutely stunning.
This is a perfect book for reading to your kids at night.
This book is so obviously made with AI "art." There are so many mistakes in the pictures it is ruining the story even if the story were something special. But it's really isn't. Some really young kids will enjoy this, but when they ask about why the some sheep only have 3 legs, you'll know why.
I read this book with my two year old niece, I thought it provided a calm and relaxing environment. The pictures are also adorable.
Such a cute and funny bedtime book. I loved the sheep we were counting, and I especially loved their clothes. The rhymes are light and relaxing.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
Overall, the book was well written, captured my attention and I did really enjoy it. Thank you for this advance copy!
This was a fun little bedtime story book. I was originally attracted to it from the adorable cover, and the title made it sound like a fun twist where the sheep would be counting, rather than the humans counting. I was, however, incorrect about that assumption, and it ended up being a straightforward counting of sheep. The illustrations were bright and entertaining, with the sheep formations having quirky elements such as hats and a pillow fort. At one point, I questioned whether or not the illustrations were AI-generated.
There wasn't a storyline here, and I feel like it would've done better with one. While the rhymes were cute, there is a lost opportunity in not incorporating the numbers into the rhyme (example: could've put something like, "Baaa, baaa! Two leap like clouds above a tree. Add one more to the dance, then two becomes...three!"
Overall, the art stands out, but the story does not.
